Motivation - To enrich our understanding of the factors that influence the decision to overtake against two way traffic, and this, beyond the limitations of the human visual system in making spatiotemporal estimations. Such understanding may be valuable for the design of future adaptive aid systems. Research approach - An explorative naturalistic observation was conducted with a vehicle equipped with three cameras travelling at normal speed for a total distance of 300 km. 40 unobtrusive observations of overtaking episodes were recorded. Findings/Design - The data is still at the analysis stage. There is however evidence that before the decision to overtake (i) there is a preparation phase prior to the initiation of the overtaking manoeuvre which deals with the intentions/state of the driver ahead and (ii) frequent users of the particular road will use their specific knowledge and initiate overtaking manoeuvres Research limitations/Implications - The study has an explorative character mainly for generating hypotheses and cannot as such prove its findings without subsequent complementary methods. Originality/Value - A contribution of the present paper is on the observation method which ensures the collection of data with a high degree of ecological validity. Take away message - Spatiotemporal estimation just prior to manoeuvre initiation is only one of the factors influencing the decision to overtake. For understanding naturally occurring overtaking manoeuvres longer time frames of analysis are needed.

The information visualization process can be described as a set of transformations applied to raw data to produce interactive graphical representations of information for end-users. A challenge in information visualization is to provide flexible and powerful ways of describing and controlling this process. Most work in this domain address the problem at either application level or toolkit level. Approaches at the toolkit level are devoted to developers while approaches at the application level are devoted to end-users. Our approach build on previous work but goes one step beyond by proposing a unifying view of this process that can be used by both developers and end-users. Our contribution is a system named STOOG with a three-fold contribution: (1) a style-sheets based language for the explicit description of the transformation process at stake in information visualization, (2) an application that automatically builds interactive and graphical visualization of data based on style-sheet descriptions, (3) a user interface devoted to the conception of style sheets. In this paper, we present STOOG basic concepts and mechanisms and provide a case study to illustrate the benefits of using STOOG for the interactive and visual exploration of information.

Developed for studying long, periodic records of various measured quantities, time series analysis methods are inherently suited and offer interesting possibilities for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications. However, their use in SHM can still be regarded as an emerging application and deserves more studies. In this research, Autoregressive (AR) models were used to fit experimental acceleration time histories from two experimental structural systems, a 3-storey bookshelf-type laboratory structure and the ASCE Phase ii SHM Benchmark Structure, in healthy and several damaged states. The coefficients of the AR models were chosen as damage sensitive features. Preliminary visual inspection of the large, multidimensional sets of AR coefficients to check the presence of clusters corresponding to different damage severities was achieved using Sammon mapping - an efficient nonlinear data compression technique. Systematic classification of damage into states based on the analysis of the AR coefficients was achieved using two supervised classification techniques: Nearest Neighbor Classification (NNC) and Learning Vector Quantization (LVQ), and one unsupervised technique: Self-organizing Maps (SOM). This paper discusses the performance of AR coefficients as damage sensitive features and compares the efficiency of the three classification techniques using experimental data.

We present an interactive visualization system for the analysis of Gaussian mixture speaker models. The system exhibits the inner workings of the model intuitively by visualizing graphical representations of its parameters and of the underlying acoustical data at the same time. This enables the exploration of new modeling possibilities in the context of speaker clustering tasks.

The wave front sensor used in this paper is based on Makyoh method: the studied sample is illuminated by a collimated light beam and the reflected beam is collected by a camera. Previously it was demonstrated that this method enables the determination of surface flatness in the nanometer range. For this purpose the deformation of an initially planar wave front is detected and evaluated using patterns projected on the surface. This paper demonstrates that the sensor can also be used without patterns for characterization of surfaces flatness in the sub-micrometer and micrometer ranges. The intensity distribution image obtained can be interpreted in terms of topography as follows: convex areas of the studied surface defocus the beam (dark regions on the image) while the concave areas focus it (bright regions). The main result of this work is the development of a new approach for the fast assessment of the surface quality. This approach estimates the areas and the intensities of bright regions on the image and gives the value of the maximum concavity on the studied surface. For evaluation of data a simulation of the reflected from the given profile was made. The setup parameters, e. g. distances between the optical components, were optimized with the parameters obtained from the 2D simulation of the wave front sensor. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of wave front sensing for the topography analysis of reflective surfaces such as bare wafers' surfaces, metallic thin films, etc. used in semiconductor industry.

Are we in the semantic web/linked data community effectively attempting to make possible a new literacy - one of data rather than document analysis? By opening up data beyond the now familiar hand crafted Web 2 mash up of data about X plus geography, what are we trying to do, really? Is the goal at least in part to enable net citizens rather than only geeks the ability to pick up, explore, blend, interogate and represent data sources so that we may draw our own statistically informed conclusions about information, and thereby build new knowledge in ways not readily possible before without access to these data seas? If we want citizens rather than just scientists or statisticians or journalists for that matter to be able to pour over data and ask statistically sophisticated questions of comparison and contrast betewen times, places and people, does that mission re-order our research priorities at all? If the goal is to enpower citizens to be able to make use of data, what do we need to make this vision real beyond attending to Tim Berners-Lee's call to "free your data"? The purpose of this talk therefore will be to look at key ineraction issues around defining and delivering a useful, usable *data explorotron* for citizens. In particular, well consider who is a "citizen user" and what access to and tools for linked data sense making means in this case. From that perspective, well consider research issues around discovery, exploration, interrogation and representation of data for not only a single wild data source but especially for multiple wild heterogeneous data sources. I hope this talk may help frame some stepping stones towards useful and usable interaction with linked data, and look forward to input from the community to refine such a new literacy agenda further.

We present an algorithm designed for navigating around a performance that was filmed as a "casual" multi-view video collection: real-world footage captured on hand held cameras by a few audience members. The objective is to easily navigate in 3D, generating a video-based rendering (VBR) of a performance filmed with widely separated cameras. Casually filmed events are especially challenging because they yield footage with complicated backgrounds and camera motion. Such challenging conditions preclude the use of most algorithms that depend on correlation-based stereo or 3D shape-from-silhouettes. Our algorithm builds on the concepts developed for the exploration of photo-collections of empty scenes. Interactive performerspecific view-interpolation is now possible through innovations in interactive rendering and offline-matting relating to i) modeling the foreground subject as video-sprites on billboards, ii) modeling the background geometry with adaptive view-dependent textures, and iii) view interpolation that follows a performer. The billboards are embedded in a simple but realistic reconstruction of the environment. The reconstructed environment provides very effective visual cues for spatial navigation as the user transitions between viewpoints. The prototype is tested on footage from several challenging events, and demonstrates the editorial utility of the whole system and the particular value of our new inter-billboard optimization. © 2010 ACM.

We report a tentative interferometric detection of an earth-orbiting artificial satellite using optical interferometry. We targeted four geosynchronous communications satellites with the Navy Prototype Optical Interferometer (NPOI) near Flagstaff, AZ, and obtained interferometric fringes on one of them, DIRECTV-9S. We used an east-west 15.9-meter baseline of the NPOI and took data in 16 spectral channels covering the 500-850 nm wavelength range. Observations took place during the "glint season" of 28 February to 3 March 2008, when the geometry of the solar panel arrays and the Sun's position creates glints as bright as 2nd magnitude of a few minutes' duration each night. We detected fringes on the satellite at approximately the 2 sigma level on 1 March at magnitude 4.5. Subsequent analysis shows that the fringe amplitudes are consistent with a size scale of 2 meters (50 nanoradians at geosynchronous orbit) in an east-west direction. This detection shows that interferometric detection of satellites at visual wavelengths is possible, and suggests that a multi-baseline interferometer array tailored to the angular size and brightness of geosynchronous satellites could lead to images of these satellites.

This paper describes the pressure coring and pressure core analysis tools to be used on the upcoming Gulf of Mexico Joint Industry Project (GOM-JIP) Expedition iiI. Pressure cores and pressure core analysis have become more important as scientists, exploration geologists, and geohazard engineers strive to understand gas-rich formations, including but not limited to gas-hydrate-bearing marine sediments, coalbed methane reserves, and shale gas reservoirs. After the highly successful GOM-JIP logging-while-drilling Expedition ii, gas-hydrate-rich sections have been identified and will be cored on GOM-JIP Expedition iiI. Extensive use of pressure coring tools is anticipated, providing both samples for laboratory studies as well as data collected under pressure for the scientific community. The new HPTC (High Pressure Temperature Corer) will collect 3.5-meter-long samples of core at in situ pressures, while the one-meter-long FPC and FRPC (Fugro Pressure and Rotary Pressure Corers) will be used as alternate coring systems. All coring tools will be adapted to work in a flexible bottom hole assembly negating any need to trip pipe between changes of tools. PCATS (Pressure Core analysis & Transfer System) will provide the infrastructure to both handle and conduct non-destructive testing of all these cores under pressure, providing gamma density, ultrasonic P-wave velocity, and X-ray computed tomography (CT) of the cores at full pressure. PCATS moves cores under pressure with linear and rotational precision for use with other purpose-built, compatible measurement systems and also cuts subsections of cure under pressure, pushing these pieces into customized pressure cells for further analysis and testing. It is anticipated that together these four tools will collect and provide to the scientific community more pressurized core samples from GOM-JIP Expedition iiI than from all previous gas hydrate expeditions. There is a growing interest in developing computational models of grasping action recognition. This interest is increasingly motivated by a wide range of applications in robotics, neuroscience, HCl, motion capture and other research areas. In many cases, a vision-based approach to grasping action recognition appears to be more promising. For example, in HCI and robotic applications, such an approach often allows for simpler and more natural interaction. However, a vision-based approach to grasping action recognition is a challenging problem due to the large number of hand self-occlusions which make the mapping from hand visual appearance to the hand pose an inverse ill-posed problem. The approach proposed here builds on the work of Santello and co-workers which demonstrate a reduction in hand variability within a given class of grasping actions. The proposed neural network architecture introduces specialized modules for each class of grasping actions and viewpoints, allowing for a more robust hand pose estimation. A quantitative analysis of the proposed architecture obtained by working on a synthetic data set is presented and discussed as a basis for further work.
