Tourists face a great challenge when they gather information about places they want to visit. Geographically tagged information in the form of Wikipedia pages, local tourist information pages, dedicated web sites and the massive amount of information provided by Google Earth is publicly available and commonly used. But the processing of this information involves a time consuming activity. Our goal is to make search for attractive places simpler for the common user and provide researchers with methods for exploration and analysis of attractive areas. We assume that an attractive place is characterized by large amounts of photos taken by many people. This paper presents a framework in which we demonstrate a systematic approach for visualization and exploration of attractive places as a zoom able information layer. The presented technique utilizes density-based clustering of image coordinates and smart color scaling to produce an interactive visualizations using Google Earth Mash up. We show that our approach can be used as a basis for detailed analysis of attractive areas. In order to demonstrate our method, we use real-world geo-tagged photo data obtained from Flickr and Panoramio to construct interactive visualizations of virtually every region of interest in the world.

In the comparative proteomics studies, visualization has become an emerging technique in the analysis. It provides an intuitive overview of large-scale mass spectrometry data sets with possibilities to further explore data details at different levels. While different visualization tools have already been developed, they are often designed to handle one or a few mass spectrometry data sets. Apparently, this is not enough as many proteomics studies involve many samples. It is much desired to simultaneously visualize all data sets in order to better examine data sets. In this paper, we present a visualization tool named SyncPro for differential analysis of multiple pre-processed proteomics data sets. It offers features to (i) compare many data sets simultaneously; (ii) facilitate dataexploration through selection and extraction; (iii) quickly judge the quality of selected features. Our proposed method further enhances the functions of existing visualization tools.

Process design requires the solution of complex models. These models are typically nonlinear and non-convex. The design optimisation problem is also often combinatorial in nature. An example is the design of thermally integrated process plants for energy minimisation where excess heat from one part of a process plant may be used to meet heating demands in other parts of the same plant (cf. e.g. [2]). Due to the complexity of the models and the combinatorial nature of the search, design is often undertaken as a series of steps with increasing detail from step to step [1]. Information gained in any step can be useful in subsequent steps. This information may come from data generated during design. Therefore, dataanalysis and visualisation are key elements in effective design. Copyright 2010 ACM.

This paper holds as its core objective the report of the research developed towards the conceptualisation and prototyping of an Information visualisation system capable of providing a quick and accurate view of the set of data collected by the SAPO Broker web service regarding access activity in the SAPO news website. SAPO Broker, a real-time monitoring application that collects data generated by every type of activity within the SAPO Web Portal. The research presented and its results undertook two major challenges: i) design a visual metaphor capable of integrating news related collected data for a specific target audience, technology setup and context of use; ii) design user friendly and context valid interaction tools able to assist dataanalysis and help improve news editorial related tasks. Throughout this paper the need for transdisciplinary teamwork and diverse scientific knowledge correlation is reinforced, as we believe it should be when the core issue is Information visualisation.

Protection of critical transportation infrastructure such as railroad station is an important topic in these days. In this paper, we develop a new rule based approach to video surveillance system for detecting situations where pedestrians may be in peril, as well as suspicious action or interactions at railroad station. We analyze here two general types of pedestrian involved behaviors: (i) single pedestrian or no interaction, (ii) multiple pedestrian interactions. The behavior analysis is accomplished through the development of geometric and motion visual features for each pedestrian. The performance evaluation is carried out by using the video streams taken in the rail road stations. The results show that our algorithm is very simple and effective.

To design, to study, and to control mixed animals-robots societies is a challenging field of scientific exploration that can bring new frameworks to study individual and collective behaviors in animal and mixed robot-animal societies. In the Chicken Robot project we aim at developing a mobile robot, able to collaborate with a group of chicks and to control certain group behaviors. The first research step is to build formal models of relevant animal behaviors by performing ethological experiments. Hence, one of the principal tasks is to design a setup equipped with appropriate monitoring tools. In this paper, we present a toolset for running chick-robot experiments and analyzing results. It includes an autonomous PoulBot robot and an experimental setup, able to autonomously record experimental video and audio data, to detect displacements of chicks and robots, to detect their calling activity and to provide robots with these data. We also present a visualdataanalysis system to extract behavioral features of individual chicks using the variational Bayesian Gaussian mixture model classification with a particle filters based prediction of future positions of chicks. We show how these tools are currently used to carry out chick-robot experiments, to collect behavioral data and to extract animal behavioral features that allow us to build behavioral models bound to be implemented in the robot.

visualization has been around for more than two decades. Various techniques have been proposed, and some have found their fitting places in many applications in documentation visualization, scientific visualization, etc. To our knowledge, no one has applied the Weibull distribution’s probability density functions whose flexibility lies in their adjustable shape and scale parameters to the information visualization. It is known that the different shapes and scales of the probability density functions could statistically model and effectively represent underlying data. Most data could approximately be modeled by the functions, their translations, their reflection symmetries, or a combination of them. We, therefore, explore the potential of the visualization technique which is based on the Weibull distribution’s probability density functions.

Asphaltene is the heavy component of a crude oil that constitutes a potential problem because of its tendency to precipitate and deposit causing blockage in tubulars, pipelines and surface facilities leading to decline in oil production. There are a number of wells affected with asphaltene in an onshore field in Abu Dhabi and this is likely to increase in the future with the implementation of Artificial Lift (AL) and HC/CO2 gas injection for EOR. Mitigation strategies in the field have been concentrating on design of remedial solvent treatments in combination with mechanical methods for removal of deposits. The company's approach has been shifting in dealing with asphaltenes from reactive to proactive by conducting studies to: understand asphaltene stability in the different fluids, model the behavior across the whole field, look at the effect of HC/O2 gas injection on asphaltene stability and finally develop optimal preventative techniques to reduce treatment costs. The study in this onshore field in Abu Dhabi was conducted on oils collected from different zones. The first part of the study involved analysis of different stock tank oil properties, e.g. API, Sulfur content, Nickel content, asphaltene content and viscosity to look for correlations that can help in identifying the problematic areas in the field. The second part of the study involved asphaltene stability screening tests, e.g. SARA screen, to determine whether the fluids from the different zones are stable or unstable with respect to asphaltene. Live-oil depressurization experiments were conducted on selected wells to determine the Asphaltene Onset Pressure (AOP) at different production conditions using solids detection system with Near Infra-Red (NIR) and High Pressure Microscopy (HPM) for visual confirmation of asphaltene particles. The data from the live-oil testing was then used to calibrate Shell's thermodynamic model which was then used to investigate the effect of changes in process conditions on
