This paper investigates a human-centered approach for the exploration of large data sets resulting from CFD (computational fluid dynamics) simulations. In a VR (virtual reality) immersive environment we propose to couple haptic feedbacks with visual rendering. The proposed solution aims at identifying critical points of an unsteady fluid flow without resorting to any topology analysis such as eigen analysis of the vector field Jacobian. In a first step, while exploring the data volume, a vibration alerts the user on the presence of critical points in the local volume surrounding the probe position. In a second step, critical point properties are emphasized by means of a visuo-haptic feedback. A set of experiments confirms the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Thanks to the combination of haptic feedbacks with the visual materialization of critical points and streamlines, users were able to easily localize, analyze and focus on specific critical points, selected by experts as representative of the flow topology.

This paper presents a new approach for outlier handling and analysis of geospatial-autocorrelation data. We improved a new outlier detecting model named comparative method of unit matrix (CMUM) based on standard-deviation rule (SDR) and estimating neighborhood method (ENM) and compared this model with SDR, ENM and influencing coefficient method (ICM), and evaluate all four methods with respect to their advantages and limitations by geostatistics analysis and visualization software. Examples of visual displays are provided for data on soil nutrients in Pingba county, Guizhou Province. We suggest a combination of SDR with CMUM for analysis and integration of spatial variability data. Emphasis is put on combination of traditional statistical, geostatistical, visualization techniques and software for geospatial autocorrelation data exploration. The combination improved the precision and efficiency of geostatistic analysis, enhances the information obtained and gives more complete description of the distribution and associations.

In the airline industry, as in many other industries, customer data is predominantly based on quantitative data. This quantitative data is collected as a by-product of the various business process involved from the booking of a flight through flight departure. By contrast, this paper explores the possibility of augmenting this quantitative data with relational data by identifying links between passengers. These links can represent different relationships such as booked-with, travelled-with, or has-same-address. Different methods and types of relationships are proposed and discussed, along with the business benefits such relational data adds to current customer information systems. Finally, we propose visual approaches to facilitate the exploration of this data by business analysts in marketing, sales and customer loyalty business units.

Understanding Web navigational data is a crucial task for Web analysts as it may influence the Web site improvement process. However, major Web analytics tools do not provide enough insight, taking into account the vast amount of data available in Web serverspsila log files. Moreover, some analysts argue that those tools have a lack of rich visualisations that enable the exploration of such data. In this paper we introduce new techniques applied to a highly interactive and exploratory tool, to allow drilling down through Web usage data. The system uses a set of coordinated visual abstractions from Web site structure and userspsila navigation to provide different perspectives and hence, to assist the conversion of data into knowledge.

This paper proposes a new interactive visualization for analyzing large hierarchical structures and networks. The technique combines of different graph layout methods with a layout refinement process, an interactive navigation mechanism and clustering algorithms. The integration of these components makes it flexible in dealing with a variety of graph and hierarchical structures. Interactive exploration is enabled with chain-context view. We aim to provide user with an effective mechanism for understanding of the nature of various networks. This could lead to the discovering and revealing of the hidden structures and relationships among elements as well as relationships associated with the elements.

To understand software systems it is common practice to explore runtime information such as method calls. System behavior analysis can further be facilitated by additionally taking runtime data dependencies into account. In object oriented systems, a typical data dependency is the information about which objects are accessed by the traced method calls. To support software engineers in handling the massive amount of information that execution traces typically consist of, highly scalable visualizations are needed. In this paper, we propose a trace-visualization technique that (a) explicitly visualizes both, method calls and object accesses, and (b) provides high scalability to handle large execution traces. With regard to the visualization technique proposed, we give a systematic overview of visual patterns that are to be expected and of their meanings with respect to system behavior. Additionally, we present the results of three case-studies to show how our approach facilitates developers in comprehending the behavior of complex C++ software systems.

With the exploration of the Internet, the data gathering from the Web is a challenge task. Both the traditional Client/Server (C/S) scheme and the new Mobile Agent (MA) scheme have their advantages and shortcomings. In this paper, a hybrid data gathering scheme is proposed based on minimum cost principle i.e. the minimum data transferred or the minimum running time. Through the analysis for C/S scheme and MA scheme respectively, we can set a threshold for choosing the appropriate data gathering scheme. The C/S scheme is more efficient if the crawled web site has a few pages. Otherwise, the MA scheme is better. The proposed scheme is tested in VAST (visual & SemanTic image search) system, and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this paper, we restudy the non-convex data factorization problems (regularized or not, unsupervised or supervised), where the optimization is confined in the nonnegative orthant, and provide a unified convergency provable solution based on multiplicative nonnegative update rules. This solution is general for optimization problems with block-wisely quadratic objective functions, and thus direct update rules can be derived by skipping over the tedious specific procedure deduction process and algorithmic convergence proof. By taking this unified solution as a general template, we i) re-explain several existing nonnegative data factorization algorithms, ii) develop a variant of nonnegative matrix factorization formulation for handling out-of-sample data, and Hi) propose a new nonnegative data factorization algorithm, called correlated co-decomposition (CCD), to simultaneously factorize two feature spaces by exploring the inter-correlated information. Experiments on both face recognition and multi-label image annotation tasks demonstrate the wide applicability of the unified solution as well as the effectiveness of two proposed new algorithms.

Educational process mining (EPM) aims at (i) constructing complete and compact educational process models that are able to reproduce all observed behavior (process model discovery), (ii) checking whether the modeled behavior (either pre-authored or discovered from data) matches the observed behavior (conformance checking), and (iii) projecting information extracted from the logs onto the model, to make the tacit knowledge explicit and facilitate better understanding of the process (process model extension). In this paper we propose a new domain-driven framework for EPM which assumes that a set of pattern templates can be predefined to focus the mining in a desired way and make it more effective and efficient. We illustrate the ideas behind our approach with examples of academic curricular modeling, mining, and conformance checking, using the student database of our department.

The comprehensive understanding of today's software systems is a daunting activity, because of the sheer size and complexity that such systems exhibit. Moreover, software systems evolve, which dramatically increases the amount of data one needs to analyze in order to gain insights into such systems. Indeed, software complexity is recognized as one of the major challenges to the development and maintenance of industrial-size software projects. Our vision is a 3D visualization approach which helps software engineers build knowledge about their systems. We settled on an intuitive metaphor, which depicts software systems as cities. To validate the ideas emerging from our research, we implemented a tool called CodeCity. We devised a set of visualization techniques to support tasks related to program comprehension, design quality assessment, and evolution analysis, and applied them on large open-source systems written in Java, C++, or Smalltalk. Our next research goals are enriching our metaphor with meaningful representations for relations and encoding higher-level information.
