Cogent confabulation is a computation model that mimics the Hebbian learning, information storage, inter-relation of symbolic concepts, and the recall operations of the brain. The model has been applied to cognitive processing of language, audio and visual signals. In this project, we focus on how to accelerate the computation which underlie confabulation based sentence completion through software and hardware optimization. On the software implementation side, appropriate data structures can improve the performance of the software by more than 5,000X. On the hardware implementation side, the cogent confabulation algorithm is an ideal candidate for parallel processing and its performance can be significantly improved with the help of application specific, massively parallel computing platforms. However, as the complexity and parallelism of the hardware increases, cost also increases. Architectures with different performance-cost tradeoffs are analyzed and compared. Our analysis shows that although increasing the number of processors or the size of memories per processor can increase performance, the hardware cost and performance improvements do not always exhibit a linear relation. Hardware configuration options must be carefully evaluated in order to achieve good cost performance tradeoffs.

To better understand how developmental regulatory networks are defined in the genome sequence, the Berkeley Drosophila Transcription Network Project (BDNTP ) has developed a suite of methods to describe 3D gene expression data, i.e., the output of the network at cellular resolution for multiple time points. To allow researchers to explore these novel data sets we have developed PointCloudXplore (PCX). In PCX we have linked physical and information visualization views via the concept of brushing (cell selection). For each view dedicated operations for performing selection of cells are available. In PCX, all cell selections are stored in a central management system. Cells selected in one view can in this way be highlighted in any view allowing further cell subset properties to be determined. Complex cell queries can be defined by combining different cell selections using logical operations such as AND, OR, and NOT. Here we are going to provide an overview of PointCloudXplore 2 (PCX2), the latest publicly available version of PCX. PCX2 has shown to be an effective tool for visual exploration of 3D gene expression data. We discuss (i) all views available in PCX2, (ii) different strategies to perform cell selection, (iii) the basic architecture of PCX2., and (iv) illustrate the usefulness of PCX2 using selected examples.

This paper presents an Interactive View-Driven Evenly Spaced Streamline placement algorithm (IVDESS) for 3D explorative visualization of large complex planar or curved surface flows. IVDESS rapidly performs accurate streamline integration in 3D physical space, i.e., the flow field, while achieving high quality streamline density control in 2D view space, i.e., the output image. The correspondence between the two spaces is established by using a projection unprojection pair constituted through geometric surface rendering. An inter-frame physical-space seeding strategy based on streamline reuse+lengthening is adopted, on top of intra-frame view-space seeding, to not only enable coherent flow navigation but also speedup placement generation. IVDESS employs a view-sensitive streamline representation that is well suited for streamline reuse, lengthening, and rendering. In addition, it avoids temporal incoherence caused by streamline splitting and jaggy lines caused by unprojection errors. Our algorithm can run at interactive frame rates (9FPS for placement generation) to allow for 3D exploration of surface flows with smooth evolution of high-density (1%) evenly spaced streamlines in a large window (990 x 700 pixels) on an ordinary PC without either pre-processing or GPU support.

HUSH (Hybrid Unsteady Simulation of Helicopters) is a computational framework developed to predict and analyze the rotor-wake aerodynamics, the blade structural dynamics, the rotor performance, and the resulting aeroacoustics of rotorcrafts operating over a range of flight conditions. The key to this approach is the coupled simulation of a high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics model, e.g., an unsteady RANS solver, with a comprehensive blade structural dynamics model to accurately simulate the aerodynamic environment in which the rotor blades operate. The coupled numerical model is solved iteratively along with an appropriate vehicle trim algorithm until a converged solution for the desired flight condition is obtained. The data exchange between the domain-specific solvers is facilitated using a Python-based library which provides the flexibility of coupling different computational codes using a standard set of interfaces with minimal modifications to the participating codes. The framework has been used to successfully analyze various rotor configurations, including traditional articulated and hingeless rotors (UH-60A, HART-ii, model DNW rotor, etc.). More recently, the framework was used in the analysis of more exotic configurations such as bearingless rotors (MDART) and rotors with trailing edge flaps (SMART). The results from the simulations have been extensively validated with measurements from the UH-60A Airloads Program, the HART ii test program, and the full-scale wind tunnel experiments of the MDART rotor.

The inhomogeneous Poisson (Laplace) equation with internal Dirichlet boundary conditions has recently appeared in several applications ranging from image segmentation [1, 2, 3] to image colorization [4], digital photo matting [5, 6] and image filtering [7, 8]. In addition, the problem we address may also be considered as the generalized eigenvector problem associated with Normalized Cuts [9], the linearized anisotropic diffusion problem [10, 1], 8] solved with a backward Euler method, visual surface reconstruction with discontinuities [12, 13] or optical flow [14]. Although these approaches have demonstrated quality results, the computational burden of finding a solution requires an efficient solver. Design of an efficient multigrid solver is difficult for these problems due to unpredictable inhomogeneity in the equation coefficients and internal Dirichlet boundary conditions with unpredictable location and value. Previous approaches to multigrid solvers have typically employed either a data-driven operator (with fast convergence) or the maintenance of a lattice structure at coarse levels (with low memory overhead). In addition to memory efficiency, a lattice structure at coarse levels is also essential to taking advantage of the power of a GPU implementation [15,16,5,3]. In this work, we present a multigrid method that maintains the low memory overhead (and GPU suitability) associated with a regular lattice while benefiting from the fast convergence of a data-driven coarse operator.

Work on the construction site is known to be inefficient due to workers spending much time waiting for materials, transporting materials and from frequent interruptions of tasks. Studies on the construction site typically use statistical measures to analyse the sampled data about work and such measures, while very useful, can overlook important features of the data. In this paper we apply a previously developed approach, derived from time geographical methods,to visually represent the sampled construction productivity data and show that this method may enable the analyst to better understand the distribution of activities, and how they are interrelated and dependent upon each other.

The use of information visualization tools that support multiple coordinated views for data exploration and analysis has become more frequent. However, few usability studies have focused this group of tools. The goal of this paper is to perform usability experiments with tools supporting multiple coordinated views on the same screen, in separate screens and tools that support each technique individually. To ensure a fair evaluation, a complexity-based task taxonomy was developed. The tools were therefore used to answer questions of the same level of complexity.

Flight tests were conducted at Greenbrier Valley Airport (KLWB) and Easton Municipal Airport / Newnam Field (KESN) in a Cessna 402B aircraft using a head-up display (HUD) and a Norris Electro Optical Systems Corporation (NEOC) developmental ultraviolet (UV) sensor. - These flights were sponsored by NEOC under a Federal Aviation Administration program, and the ultraviolet concepts, technology, system mechanization, and hardware for landing during low visibility landing conditions have been patented by NEOC. Imagery from the UV sensor, HUD guidance cues, and out-the-window videos were separately recorded at the engineering workstation for each approach. Inertial flight path data were also recorded. Various configurations of portable UV emitters were positioned along the runway edge and threshold. The UV imagery of the runway outline was displayed on the HUD along with guidance generated from the mission computer. Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) approaches with the UV sensor were conducted from the initial approach fix to the ILS decision height in both VMC! and IMC. Although the availability of low visibility conditions during the flight test period was limited, results from previous fog range testing concluded that UV EFVS has the performance capability to penetrate CAT ii runway visual range obscuration. Furthermore, independent analysis has shown that existing runway light emit sufficient UV radiation without the need for augmentation other than lens replacement with UV transmissive quartz lenses. Consequently, UV sensors should qualify as confon-ning to FAA requirements for EFVS approaches. Combined with Synthetic Vision System (SVS), UV EFVS would function as both a precision landing aid, as well as an integrity monitor for the GPS and SVS database.

In this paper, we extend our generic ldquoGeoAnalyticsrdquo visualization (GAV) component toolkit, based on the principles behind visual Analytics (VA), to also support time-oriented, geographically referenced and multivariate attribute volumetric data. GAV includes components that support a mixture of technologies from the three data visualization fields: information visualization (InfoVis), geovisualization (GeoVis) and scientific visualization (SciVis). Our research concentrates on visual user interface (VUI) techniques through dynamic and direct data manipulation that permit the visual analytical process to become more interactive and focused. This paper encourages synergies between well-known information- and volume data visualization methods applied in a multiple-linked and coordinated views interface. We address challenges for improved data interaction techniques with volumetric data and the need for immediate response. Varieties of explorative data analysis (EDA) tasks and the possibility to view the information simultaneously from different perspectives and scenarios are discussed. The effectiveness of our geovisual analytics framework is demonstrated in a tailor-made volume data explorer (VDE) application that integrates InfoVis, GeoVis and SciVis visualization methods assembled from GAV components. VDE facilitates dynamic exploration and correlation of temporal ocean space temperature and salinity data supplied in a NetCDF format from NOAA. This real-world phenomenon that corresponds to a huge volumetric data set comprises more than 31 million values for a time period of 12 months in 1994.

Our long term research goal is to develop a fully automated, image-based diagnostic system for early diagnosis of pulmonary nodules that may lead to lung cancer. This paper focuses on monitoring the development of lung nodules detected in successive chest low dose (LD) CT scans of a patient. We propose a new methodology for 3D LDCT data registration which is non-rigid and involves two steps: (i) global alignment of one scan (target) to another scan (reference or prototype) using the learned prior appearance model followed by (ii) local alignment in order to correct for intricate deformations. After equalizing signals for two subsequent chest scans, visual appearance of these chest images is modeled with a Markov-Gibbs random field with pairwise interaction. We estimate the affine transformation that globally register the target to the prototype by gradient descent maximization of a special Gibbs energy function. To handle local deformations, we deform each voxel of the target over evolving closed equi-spaced surfaces (iso-surfaces) to closely match the prototype. The evolution of the iso-surfaces is guided by an exponential speed function in the directions that minimize distances between the corresponding voxel pairs on the iso-surfaces in both the data sets. Preliminary results on the 135 LDCT data sets from 27 patients show that our proper registration could lead to precise diagnosis and identification of the development of the detected pulmonary nodules. © 2008 IEEE.
