In this work we present an integrated set of tools allowing a multi-step process that, starting from raw datasets, brings them through dimensionality reduction, preclustering analysis and clustering assessment, to a visual and interactive environment for dataexploration. At the core of the process lies the idea of subdividing the process of data clusterization into different steps: a preliminary analysis in which algorithmic parameters are estimated, a clustering step based on the previous analysis and, finally, a clusterization assessment step including interactive clustering. This last step allows users to participate in the process of clustering and helps them figuring out the data underlying structures. The models are actually implemented in a group of integrated, user-friendly tools under the MATLAB environment, featuring a number of classical and novel data processing, visualization, assessment and interaction methods.

CluVis, a prototype for visual monitoring and exploration of cluster and network metadata, is introducted. CluVis builds upon interactively added charts of cluster/network meta-data (e.g., packets received, processor activity, etc.) created by the user. CluVis uses a dual-domain approach that depicts the active chart on each node of a computer cluster or communication network in one view while displaying the relationships between explored charts in another view. Thus, CluVis facilitates a hypothesis-driven exploration of computer system metadata for visualanalysis. Copyright 2007 ACM.

In many application areas which deal with heterogeneous data sets temporal developments and topical relationships both play an important role. A number of visual representations have been developed which separately address each of these two aspects of the data However, a simultaneous analysis of both aspects is also often required. In this paper we introduce an approach which utilizes a combination of visual representations, where some are targeting the temporal behaviour while others are focusing on topical relationships. The views are fused in the sense that they are tightly coupled with respect to the visualised data set, considered time interval, and user actions. The resulting user interface enables the user to simultaneously explore and discover patterns in both temporal and topical aspects of a heterogeneous data set. As a proof of concept a demo application was developed and applied for visualising temporal and topical patterns extracted from meeting recordings.

The Bluejay genome browser (Browser for Linear Units in Java (TM)) is a flexible visualization environment for biological sequences, which is capable of producing high-quality graphical outputs (http://***). We have recently added functionalities to Bluejay to realize the true potential of 2D bioinformatics visualization. We describe the three major new functionalities that will be of added value to the user: (i) exploration of large genomes using level-of-detail management, (ii) comparative visualization of multiple genomes (iii) visualization of microarray data in a genomic context.

In this paper, we introduce NewsLab, an exploratory visualization approach for the analysis of large scale broadcast news video collections containing many thousands of news stories over extended periods of time. A river metaphor is used to depict the thematic changes of the news over time. An interactive lens metaphor allows the playback of fine-grained video segments selected through the river overview. Multi-resolution navigation is supported via a hierarchical time structure as well as a hierarchical theme structure. Themes can be explored hierarchically according to their thematic structure, or in an unstructured fashion using various ranking criteria. A rich set of interactions such as filtering, drill-down/roll-up navigation, history animation, and keyword based search are also provided. Our case studies show how this set of tools can be used to find emerging topics in the news, compare different broadcasters, or mine the news for topics of interest.

The water monitoring network in Northern California provides us with an integrated flow and water-quality dataset of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, the reservoirs, and the two main rivers feeding the Delta, namely the Sacramento and the San Joaquin rivers. Understanding the dynamics and complex interactions among the components of this large water supply system and how they affect the water quality, and ecological conditions for fish and wildlife requires the assimilation of large amounts of data. A multivariate, time series datavisualization tool which encompasses various components of the system, in a geographical context, is the most appropriate solution to this challenge. We have developed an abstract representation of the water system, which uses various information visualization techniques, like focuts+context techniques, graph representation, 3D glyphs, and colormapping, to visualize time series data of multiple parameters.

dataexploration, or the search for features in data that may indicate deeper relationships among variables, relies heavily on visual methods because of the power of the human eye to detect structures. However, for large data sets with many variables and dimensions, the number of dimensions of the data can be reduced by applying dimensionality reduction techniques. This paper reviews current linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques. The nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques which deal with finding a lower dimensional embedding of a nonlinear manifold can be classified under manifold learning algorithms. For basic types of nonlinear manifolds, experiments were performed on some of the current dimensionality reduction techniques. The nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques generally do not perform well in the presence of noise, as seen from the results. When faced with a larger amount of noise, one of the algorithms was not able to converge to a solution. Thus, in order to apply nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques effectively, the neighborhood, the density, and noise levels need to be taken into account.

In this paper we present Patra - an integrated document architecture which incorporates handwritten illustrations captured and rendered in a temporal fashion synchronized with audio, video, text, and image data. The architecture of Patra permits non-linear growth in the form of multiple hierarchically organized play streams. Semantic metadata is also an integral part of Patra which serves a useful purpose of organizing such documents in a collection. We have developed an email application in which the users are provided with an authoring and rendering environment to compose, view, and reply to messages in the form of Patra.

We have combined methods from volume visualization and dataanalysis to support better diagnosis and treatment of human retinal diseases. Many diseases can be identified by abnormalities in the thicknesses of various retinal layers captured using optical coherence tomography (OCT). We used a support vector machine (SVM) to perform semi-automatic segmentation of retinal layers for subsequent analysis including a comparison of layer thicknesses to known healthy parameters. We have extended and generalized an older SVM approach to support better performance in a clinical setting through performance enhancements and graceful handling of inherent noise in OCT data by considering statistical characteristics at multiple levels of resolution. The addition of the multi-resolution hierarchy extends the SVM to have "global awareness." A feature, such as a retinal layer, can therefore be modeled within the SVM as a combination of statistical characteristics across all levels;thus capturing high- and low-frequency information. We have compared our semi-automatically generated segmentations to manually segmented layers for verification purposes. Our main goals were to provide a tool that could (i) be used in a clinical setting;(ii) operate on noisy OCT data;and (iii) isolate individual or multiple retinal layers in both healthy and disease cases that contain structural deformities.
