Large, heterogeneous volumes of simulation data are calculated and stored in many disciplines, e.g. in climate and climate impact research. To gain insight, current climate analysis applies statistical methods and model sensitivity analyzes in combination with standard visualization techniques. However, there are some obstacles for researchers in applying the full functionality of sophisticated visualization, exploiting the available interaction and visualization functionality in order to go beyond data presentation tasks. In particular, there is a gap between available and actually applied multi-variate visualization techniques. Furthermore, visual data comparison of simulation (and measured) data is still a challenging task. Consequently, this paper introduces a library of visualization techniques, tailored to support exploration and evaluation of climate simulation data. These techniques are integrated into the easy-to-use visualization framework SimEnvVis - designed as a front-end user interface to a simulation environment - which provides a high level of user support generating visual representations.

The uncontrolled blow-out of a well is one of the most critical accidents that can occur during both exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon fields. Significant HSE issues are associated with this event that implies major safety risks for the field operators, potential health injury for the population living in the area and impacts on the environment. A complex methodology, for the blow-out event simulation, was developed by Eni E&P Division (in collaboration with TEA Group) in the framework of a specific R&D project (1998 to 2007), allowing the complete analysis of the phenomenology associated to blow-out events. Blowouts need to be evaluated through specific models: commercial packages may lead to a non-exhaustive analysis and, often, underestimate the effects of a blow-out. Many phenomena that occur during a blow-out event are not sufficiently treated in literature, since they necessitate experimental or CFD investigations for the development of specific models, integrated into the Blow-out software. In some cases literature/commercial models (free) have been selected after a state-of-the-art study, interfaced with the other models, and then integrated into the software. The main objective of the R&D project was the development of a user-friendly software, for a complete simulation of a blow-out event. The software was developed with visual Basic and runs in Windows 95,98,2000 & XP operative system. The main goals of the software are: easy to use, different levels of use (depending on data available), short computational time (from 0 to 10 min, depending on complexity of the simulation). The main output of the software are: the blow-out flow-rate and the risk area associated to flammable gas dispersion (flash fire), thermal radiation (jet fire), toxic gas dispersion (H2S in case of unignited blow-out, SO2 and NOx in case of ignited blow-out), oil rain and ground contamination (individuation of the area that need remediation). Coordinated multiple view (CMV) approaches have become commonplace in the development of visual tools for information visualization and visual analytics. However, research and development in CMV has focused almost exclusively on the exploratory and analytic needs of individual users working in traditional interactive desktop environments. Current understanding of collaboration in terms of perception, interaction, conceptualization, and social organization begs for integrated approaches to exploration and analysis that support visualization of information in multiple coordinated views by multiple actors working across time and space in multiple roles and environments. This statement outlines two key aspects of a possible strategy for achieving acquisition, exploration, communication, and management of information in a collaborative exploratory visualization environment built on top of a solid foundation of well-established CMV techniques.

Implementing InfoVis multivariate data tools, timelinked coordinated views and visual dynamic queries with conditioning from scratch is not a simple programming task. Our research objective is to develop a generic GeoAnalytics visualization (GAV) component toolkit, based on the principles behind visual analytics (VA), for dynamically exploring time-varying, geographically referenced and multivariate attributes simultaneously. GAV includes components based on a synergy of technologies from information visualization, geovisualization and scientific visualization. Our research concentrates on improving visual user interfaces (VUI) methods and trying to extend existing visual representation techniques. The effectiveness of our proposed component toolkit and framework is demonstrated in two customized applications GeoWizard analysing multivariate energy usage data for Swedish municipalities and MD-Explorer exploring multivariate data using novel interactive ternary diagrams. We use parallel coordinates with embedded visual inquiry methods that serves as a visual control panel for dynamically linked and coordinated views. Finally, discoveries made during the visual exploration process can be captured and organized in a format for later recall and communication to others.

The aim of this paper is to present the collection of attitude sensor data from an epilepsy monitoring unit and the results of standard exploration using principal component analysis. The collection of data from attitude sensors positioned on three limbs of epileptic patients at their bedside is described. The analysis of the data focuses, on one hand, on motor features extraction from attitude sensor data and on the other hand, on visual segmentation of seizures into events corresponding to motor manifestations classes by an expert. Principal component analysis is then realized over these features and groups of data are localized according to the expert classification. This exploration indicates a possible discrimination between these motor manifestation classes.

data exploration, or the search for features in data that may indicate deeper relationships among variables, relies heavily on visual methods because of the power of the human eye to detect structures. However, for large data sets with many variables and dimensions, the number of dimensions of the data can be reduced by applying dimensionality reduction techniques. This paper reviews current linear and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques. The nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques which deal with finding a lower dimensional embedding of a nonlinear manifold can be classified under manifold learning algorithms. For basic types of nonlinear manifolds, experiments were performed on some of the current dimensionality reduction techniques. The nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques generally do not perform well in the presence of noise, as seen from the results. When faced with a larger amount of noise, one of the algorithms was not able to converge to a solution. Thus, in order to apply nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques effectively, the neighborhood, the density, and noise levels need to be taken into account.

In many application areas which deal with heterogeneous data sets temporal developments and topical relationships both play an important role. A number of visual representations have been developed which separately address each of these two aspects of the data. However, a simultaneous analysis of both aspects is also often required. In this paper we introduce an approach which utilizes a combination of visual representations, where some are targeting the temporal behaviour while others are focusing on topical relationships. The views are fused in the sense that they are tightly coupled with respect to the visualised data set, considered time interval, and user actions. The resulting user interface enables the user to simultaneously explore and discover patterns in both temporal and topical aspects of a heterogeneous data set. As a proof of concept a demo application was developed and applied for visualising temporal and topical patterns extracted from meeting recordings.

Ever since Darwin the Tree of Life has provided a framework to study the evolution of organisms. However, comparative genome analyses of microorganisms have shown that genomes are mosaics where different parts have different histories. This is due to horizontal gene transfer that transforms the Tree of Life into a Web of Life where different parts of a genome possess different evolutionary histories. Clustering gene families based on the phylogenetic information they retain allows extracting a majority consensus for the genomes' evolution, and the determination of genes that have a conflicting phylogeny. The latter is of interest in the context of comparative genomics of prokaryotes because these conflicts point towards possible horizontal transfers of genes and metabolic pathways between divergent organisms. We have created a web-based tool Gene Phylogeny eXplorer, GPX (http://***/gpx/) that facilitates comparative genome analysis of different species. GPX displays results as an interactive map that allows users to explore and interpret genomic data representing gene evolution. It allows the visualization of consensus and conflicting evolutionary histories of genes which in turn supports the visual identification of possible horizontal gene transfer events. The novel aspect of our approach is that we do not try to analyze DNA sequences directly but instead use self-organizing maps to find structure (clusters) in a space spanned by all possible evolutionary relationships between the genomes in questions. ©2007 IEEE.

This paper presents a system for real-time video reception in low-power mobile devices using Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) technology for transmission. A demo receiver terminal is designed into a FPGA platform using the Advanced Simple Profile (ASP) MPEG-4 standard for video decoding. In order to keep the demanding DAB requirements, the bandwidth of the encoded sequence must be drastically reduced. In this sense, prior to the MPEG-4 coding stage, a preprocessing stage is performed. It is firstly composed by a segmentation phase according to motion and texture based on the Principal Component analysis (PCA) of the input video sequence, and secondly by a down-sampling phase, which depends on the segmentation results. As a result of the segmentation task, a set of texture and motion maps are obtained. These motion and texture maps are also included into the bit-stream as user data side-information and are therefore known to the receiver. For all bit-rates, the whole encoder/decoder system proposed in this paper exhibits higher image visual quality than the alternative encoding/decoding method, assuming equal image sizes. A complete analysis of both techniques has also been performed to provide the optimum motion and texture maps for the global system, which has been finally validated for a variety of video sequences. Additionally, an optimal HW/SW partition for the MPEG-4 decoder has been studied and implemented over a Programmable Logic Device with an embedded ARM9 processor. Simulation results show that a throughput of 15 QCIF frames per second can be achieved with low area and low power implementation.

We will demonstrate an interactive visualization prototype with capabilities for ad hoc exploration that we have not found in other tools for policy analysis outside of the intelligence community. This visual workspace is built on a dynamic butterfly economic model. It enables analysts to examine for policy purposes global trends in consumption, production, imports and exports at national and regional scales and to relate them to population, GDP and income elasticity.
