We describe a framework for the display of complex, multidimensional data, designed to facilitate exploration, analysis, and collaboration among multiple analysts. This framework aims to support human collaboration by making it easier to share representations, to translate from one point of view to another, to explain arguments, to update conclusions when underlying assumptions change, and to justify or account for decisions or actions. Multidimensional visualization techniques are used with interactive. context-sensitive, and tunable graphs. visual representations are flexibly generated using a knowledge representation scheme based on annotated logic;this enables not only tracking and fusing different viewpoints, but also unpacking them. Fusing representations supports the creation of multidimensional meta-displays as well as the translation or mapping from one point of view to another. At the same time, analysts also need to be able to unpack one another's complex chains of reasoning, especially if they have reached different conclusions. and to determine the implications, if any, when underlying assumptions or evidence turn out to be false. The framework enables us to support a variety of scenarios as well as to systematically generate and test experimental hypotheses about the impact of different kinds of visual representations upon interactive collaboration by teams of distributed analysts.

Social network analysis (SNA) has emerged as a powerful method for understanding the importance of relationships in networks. However, interactive exploration of networks is currently challenging because: (1) it is difficult to find patterns and comprehend the structure of networks with many nodes and links, and (2) current systems are often a medley of statistical methods and overwhelming visual output which leaves many analysts uncertain about how to explore in an orderly manner. This results in exploration that is largely opportunistic. Our contributions are techniques to help structural analysts understand social networks more effectively. We present SocialAction, a system that uses attribute ranking and coordinated views to help users systematically examine numerous SNA measures. Users can (1) flexibly iterate through visualizations of measures to gain an overview, filter nodes, and find outliers, (2) aggregate networks using link structure, find cohesive subgroups, and focus on communities of interest, and (3) untangle networks by viewing different link types separately, or find patterns across different link types using a matrix overview. For each operation, a stable node layout is maintained in the network visualization so users can make comparisons. SocialAction offers analysts a strategy beyond opportunism, as it provides systematic, yet flexible, techniques for exploring social networks.

This paper presents a technique for generation of maps of documents targeted at placing similar documents in the same neighborhood. As a result. besides being able to group (and separate) documents by their contents. it runs at very manageable computational costs. Based oil multi-dimensional projection techniques and;ill algorithm for projection improvement. it results in a surface map that allows the user to identify a number of important relationships between documents and sub-groups of documents via visualization and interaction. visual attributes such as height. color. isolines and glyphs its well as aural attributes (such as pitch), help add dimensions for integrated visualanalysis. exploration and narrowing of focus can be performed using a set of tools provided. This novel text mapping technique, named IDMAP (Interactive Document Map), is fully described in this paper. Results are compared with dimensionality reduction and cluster techniques for the same purposes. The maps are hound to support a large number of applications that rely oil retrieval and examination of document collections and to complement the type of information offered by current knowledge domain visualizations.

Browsing and retrieving images from large image collections are becoming common and important activities. Recent semantic image analysis techniques, which automatically detect high level semantic contents of images for annotation, are promising solutions toward this problem. However, few efforts have been made to convey the annotation results to users in an intuitive manner to enable effective image browsing and retrieval. There is also a lack of methods to monitor and evaluate the automatic image analysis algorithms due to the high dimensional nature of image data, features, and contents. In this paper, we propose a novel, scalable semantic image browser by applying existing information visualization techniques to semantic image analysis. This browser not only allows users to effectively browse and search in large image databases according to the semantic content of images, but also allows analysts to evaluate their annotation process through interactive visualexploration. The major visualization components of this browser are Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) based image layout, the Value and Relation (VaR) display that allows effective high dimensional visualization without dimension reduction, and a rich set of interaction tools such as search by sample images and content relationship detection. Our preliminary user study showed that the browser was easy to use and understand, and effective in supporting image browsing and retrieval tasks.

Many communities need to organize and structure data to improve their utilization and sharing. Much research has been focused on this problem. Many solutions are based on a Terminological and Ontological Resource (TOR) which represents the domain knowledge for a given application. However TORs are often designed without taking into account heterogeneous data from specific resources. For example, in the biomedical domain, these sources may be medical reports, bibliographical resources or biological data extracted from GOA, Gene Ontology or KEGG. This paper presents an integrated visual environment for knowledge engineering. It integrates heterogeneous data from domain databases. Relevant concepts and relations are thus extracted from data resources, using several analysis and treatment processes. The resulting ontology embryo is visualized through a user friendly adaptive interface displaying a knowledge map. The experiments and evaluations dealt with in this paper concern biological data.

Navigating effectively in virtual environments at human scales is a difficult problem. However, it is even more difficult to navigate in large-scale virtual environments such as those simulating the physical Universe: the huge spatial range of astronomical simulations and the dominance of empty space make it hard for users to acquire reliable spatial knowledge of astronomical contexts. This paper introduces a careful combination of navigation and visualization techniques to resolve the unique problems of large-scale real-time exploration in terms of travel and wayfinding. For large-scale travel, spatial scaling techniques and constrained navigation manifold methods are adapted to the large spatial scales of the virtual Universe. We facilitate large-scale wayfinding and context awareness using visual cues such as power-of-10 reference cubes. continuous exponential zooming into points of interest. and a scalable world-in-miniature (WIM) map. These methods enable more effective exploration and assist with accurate context-model building, thus leading to improved understanding of virtual worlds in the context of large-scale astronomy.

Effective exploration and analysis of spatially referenced educational achievement data can help educational stakeholders and policy analysts accelerate interpretation of datasets to gain valuable insights. This demonstration will present a system developed in the National Office for Research on Measurement and Evaluation Systems (NORMES) for supporting web-based interactive exploration of state-wide educational data. The statewide statistical summaries are presented in thematic maps generated by Geographic Information System (GIS). visualanalysis of the thematic maps can help educational policy analysts to "see" complex spatial relationships and to detect patterns easily. Linking among GIS maps allows educators to interactively "drill down" through a hierarchy of geopolitical levels and to visualize statistical graphics and tables which are dynamically generated using Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) script language. Through building up the relationships between maps, graphs, and databases, this interactive system allows administrators to gain an enhanced understanding of what is occurring in schools, and allow the policy analysts to generate more accurate and effective policy decisions.

Intelligence analysis often involves the task of gathering information about an organization. Knowledge about individuals in an organization and their relationships, often represented as a hierarchical organization chart, is crucial for understanding the organization. However. it is difficult for intelligence analysts to follow all individuals in an organization. Existing hierarchy visualizations have largely focused on the visualization of fixed structures and can not effectively depict the evolution of a hierarchy over time, We introduce TimeTree, a novel visualization tool designed to enable exploration of a changing hierarchy. TimeTree enables analysts to navigate the history of an organization, identify events associated with a specific entity (visualized on a TimeSlider), and explore an aggregate view of an individual's career path (a Career-Tree). We demonstrate the utility of Time-Free by investigating a set of scenarios developed by an expert intelligence analyst. The scenarios are evaluated using a real dataset composed of eighteen thousand career events from more than eight thousand individuals. Insights gained from this analysis are presented.
