In today's applications data is produced at unprecedented rates. While the capacity to collect and store new data grows rapidly, the ability to analyze these data volumes increases at much lower pace. This gap leads to new challenges in the analysis process, since analysts, decision makers, engineers, or emergency response teams depend on information "concealed" in the data. The emerging field of visual analytics focuses on handling massive, heterogenous, and dynamic volumes of information through integration of human judgement by means of visual representations and interaction techniques in the analysis process. Furthermore, it is the combination of related research areas including visualization, data mining, and statistics that turns visual analytics into a promising field of research. This paper aims at providing an overview of visual analytics, its scope and concepts, and details the most important technical research challenges in the field

Transmitting digital images via mobile device is often subject to bandwidth which are incompatible with high data rates. Embedded coding for progressive image transmission has recently gained popularity in image compression community. However, current progressive wavelet-based image coders tend to send information on the lowest-frequency wavelet coefficients first. At very low bit rates, images compressed are therefore dominated by low frequency information, where high frequency components belonging to edges are lost leading to blurring the signal features. This paper presents a new image coder employing edge preservation based on local variance analysis to improve the visual appearance and recognizability of compressed images. The analysis and compression is performed by dividing an image into blocks. Fast lifting wavelet transform is developed with the advantages of being computationally efficient and boundary effects minimized by changing wavelet shape for handling filtering near the boundaries. A modified SPIHT algorithm with more bits used to encode the wavelet coefficients and transmitting fewer bits in the sorting pass for performance improvement, is implemented to reduce the correlation of the coefficients at scalable bit rates. Local variance estimation and edge strength measurement can effectively determine the best bit allocation for each block to preserve the local features by assigning more bits for blocks containing more edges with higher variance and edge strength. Experimental results demonstrate that the method performs well both visually and in terms of MSE and PSNR. The proposed image coder provides a potential solution with parallel computation and less memory requirements for mobile applications.

Given a SystemC IP library, constructing SoC simulation models for design space exploration often distract designers from system architecture concerns to software engineering and programming concerns. Fast design space exploration using a visual architectural specification framework followed by automated IP selection and construction of simulation models without having to programmatically composing the IPs is the main attractive feature of the component composition framework developed and described in this paper. We employ concepts of metamodeling for the visual specification, meta-data for the IP reflection, and algorithmic analysis of metadata for IP selection, matching and executable model construction.

Facilitating the visual exploration of scientific data has received increasing attention in the past decade or so. Especially in life science related application areas the amount of available data has grown at a breath taking pace. In this paper we describe an approach that allows for visual inspection of large collections of molecular compounds. In contrast to classical visualizations of such spaces we incorporate a specific focus of analysis, for example the outcome of a biological experiment such as high throughout screening results. The presented method uses this experimental data to select molecular fragments of the underlying molecules that have interesting properties and uses the resulting space to generate a two dimensional map based on a singular value decomposition algorithm and a self-organizing map. Experiments on real datasets show that the resulting visual landscape groups molecules of similar chemical properties in densely connected regions

On line analytical processing (OLAP) is a technology basically created to explore data cubes and detect relevant information. Unfortunately, in huge and sparse data volumes, exploration becomes a tedious task. In such a case, simple user's intuition or experience does not always lead to efficient results. In this paper, we propose to exploit the multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in order to assist exploration of cubes by enhancing their space representations. MCA is a factorial method that maps associations of huge number of categorical variables and displays them within an appropriate space representation. Our approach uses test-values provided by MCA in order to detect and arrange OLAP facts in a large and sparse data cube within an interesting visual effect which gathers full cells in relevant regions and separates them from empty cells. Thus, it is possible to focus analysis on interesting facts by browsing directly the provided regions in the data cube

A method was tried to analyze interwell heterogeneity economically and conveniently by correlation of injection and production data. The basic idea of this method is that the fluctuations of injection rate of injector and production rate of producer can be regarded as lines of wave changing with time. A correlative coefficient is used to estimate the correlation between the two lines of waves. Taking a group of injection production wells as a study unit, centered on injection well unit, we calculate the correlative coefficient of performance parameters between production well and injection well in "correlative time window", using the correlative coefficient to reflect the relative extent between the two lines of waves. We study the reservoir in the following aspects according to correlativity and the delay time when the correlative coefficient reaches best: (1) correlative coefficient was used to distribute the injection rate, and to analyze the effect between injection rate and production rate. (2) The delay time is the effective response time for water flooding when the correlative coefficient reaches best, then we can determine which well has little effective response time, and which well is the main flow direction of injection well flow to. Only if the delay time is zero, can there be obvious flee channels between production well and injection well. (3) The analysis of the reason for minor production, output reducing and lack of injection (4) Evaluation of formation interconnection and identify big pore wormhole. This method has been made into software, it has visual operation interface, which is easy in operation and studying. The diagnostic example of big pore wormhole in china oilfield made an excellent agreement with the tracer result. Copyright 2006. Society of Petroleum Engineers.

To be most useful, evaluation requires detailed observation and effective analysis of a full spectrum of system use. We have developed an approach and architecture for in-depth data collection and analysis of all use of a visualization system. User interface components in a large visualization and analysis platform automatically record user actions, and can restore previous system states on demand. Audio and text annotations are collected and indexed to states, allowing users to find a comment and restore the system state in which they made it; then explore actions before and after. History is visible as data; so a variety of visual displays and analysis techniques may be used to develop insights about the user's experience. States of any part of the interface may be analyzed separately. Actions are categorized in a taxonomy as the user interface is built, allowing comparison of similar patterns in all tools. History data can co-exist with other data during data exploration, supporting further individual or group data exploration

Most of the existing research on time series concerns supervised forecasting problems. In comparison, little research has been devoted to unsupervised methods for the visual exploration of multivariate time series. In this paper, the capabilities of the generative topographic mapping through time, a model with solid foundations in probability theory that performs simultaneous time series data clustering and visualization, are assessed in detail in several experiments. The focus is placed on the detection of atypical data, the visualization of the evolution of signal regimes, and the exploration of sudden transitions, for which a novel identification index is defined

Scientists are now faced with an incredible volume of data to analyze. To successfully analyze and validate various hypotheses, it is necessary to pose several queries, correlate disparate data, and create insightful visualizations of both the simulated processes and observed phenomena. data exploration through visualization requires scientists to go through several steps. In essence, they need to assemble complex workflows that consist of dataset selection, specification of series of operations that need to be applied to the data, and the creation of appropriate visual representations, before they can finally view and analyze the results. Often, insight comes from comparing the results of multiple visualizations that are created during the data exploration process.
