As early as the 1970's it was determined that gait, or the "manner of walking" is an identifying feature of a human being. Since then, extensive research has been done in the field of computer vision to determine how accurately a subject can be identified by gait characteristics. This has necessarily led to the study of how various data collection conditions, such as terrain type, varying camera angles, or a carried briefcase, may affect the identifying features of gait. However, little or no research has been done to question whether such conditions may be inferred from gait analysis. For example, is it possible to determine characteristics of the walking surface simply by looking at statistics derived from the subject's gait? The question to be addressed is whether significant concealed weight distributed on the subject's torso can be discovered through analysis of his gait. Individual trends in subjects in response to increasing concealed weight will be explored, with the objective of finding universal trends that would have obvious security purposes.

Trends in multimedia consumer electronics, digital video and audio, aim to reach users through low-cost mobile devices connected to data broadcasting networks with limited bandwidth. An emergent broadcasting network is the digital audio broadcasting network (DAB) which provides CD quality audio transmission together with robustness and efficiency techniques to allow good quality reception in motion conditions. This paper focuses on the system-level evaluation of different architectural options to allow low bandwidth digital video reception over DAB, based on video compression techniques. Profiling and design space exploration techniques are applied over the ASP MPEG-4 decoder in order to find out the best HW/SW partition given the application and platform constraints. An innovative SystemC-based system-level design tool, called CASSE, is being used for modelling, exploration and evaluation of different ASP MPEG-4 decoder HW/SW partitions. System-level trade offs and quantitative data derived from this analysis are also presented in this work.

Unrestricted access to both historical and archaeological sites is highly desirable from both a research and a cultural perspective. With the recent developments in 3D scanner technologies and photogrammetric techniques, it is now possible to acquire and create accurate models of such sites. Through the process of virtualisation, numerous 3D collections are created that need to be visualised, indexed and eventually characterized. This paper presents a mobile virtual environment designed for the visualization of photorealistic high-resolution virtualised cultural heritage scenes and artefacts. In addition, it is shown how it is possible to describe and index the texture and the 3D shape of these artefacts with compact support feature vectors. A data mining system, based on these vectors, allows the characterization and the exploration of the 3D collections, through cluster analysis.

Well logging analysis plays an essential role in petroleum exploration and exploitation. It is used to identify the pay zones of gas or oil in the reservoir formations. This paper applies intelligent technology for well logging analysis, particular combining data mining and expert system together, and proposes an intelligent system for well log analysis called IntWeL Analyzer in terms of data mining platform MSMiner and expert system tool OKPS. The architecture of IntWeL Analyzer and data mining algorithms, including Ripper algorithm and MOUCLAS algorithm are also presented. MOUCLAS is based on the concept of the fuzzy set membership function that gives the new approach a solid mathematical foundation and compact mathematical description of classifiers. The aim of the study is the use of intelligent technology to interpret the pay zones from well logging data for the purpose of reservoir characterization. This approach is better than conventional techniques for well logging interpretation that cannot discover the correct relation between the well logging data and the underlying property of interest.

A set of user evaluation studies were performed to test hypotheses about the efficacy and value of the use of sonification by itself and together with visualization to improve the process of interactive dataexploration. Our results show that, in some cases, sonification yielded more accurate analysis results than visualization, and when combined with visualization, yield much better results than either one (visualization or sonification) yielded separately. That supports sonification as a valuable and promising tool that should be further studied as a complement to visualization systems.
