We present a visual analysis and exploration of fluid flow through a cooling jacket. Engineers invest a large amount of time and serious effort to optimize the flow through this engine component because of its important role in transferring heat away from the engine block. In this study we examine the design goals that engineers apply in order to construct an ideal-as-possible cooling jacket geometry and use a broad range of visualization tools in order to analyze, explore, and present the results. We systematically employ direct, geometric, and texture-based flow visualization techniques as well as automatic feature extraction and interactive feature-based methodology. And we discuss the relative advantages and disadvantages of these approaches as well as the challenges, both technical and perceptual with this application. The result is a feature-rich state-of-the-art flow visualization analysis applied to an important and complex data set from real-world computational fluid dynamics simulations.

Understanding connectivity in complex, low-porosity, fractured carbonate reservoirs is fundamental for the correct assessment of their potential. In this kind of reservoirs, fracturing is essential. It is very difficult, using only subsurface data, to correctly define the 3D distribution of the fracture network because the characteristics as fracture density and fracture type are often doubtful. The Upper Cretaceous Rudist Carbonates of the Apulian Inner Platform represent a superb reservoir for some of the most prolific southern Italy HC fields (figure 1). This reservoir is deeply buried underneath a thick pile of allochothonous thrust sheets but the outcrop equivalent in the Maiella Mountain allow to study its 3D architecture and characteristics. Fracturing is not randomly distributed but the pervasive fracture distribution at bed scale (background fractures) is closely related to the distribution of different sedimentary facies. This relationship is a key starting point to correctly model the reservoir behaviour in terms of three-dimensional connectivity (fracture connectivity network) and of identification of potential fracture-related good hydrocarbon storage intervals. The multi-disciplinary outcrop acquisition method and integration used for this study are innovative: they are designed to get the most interactive contribution between sedimentary, stratigraphic, mechanical and structural analysis. Generally, fine-grained sedimentary facies (the more abundant and continuous in the inner platform) are characterised by higher fracture densities (for all fracture orders). In such sedimentary facies, typical fracture sets are often sub-parallel and bed-confined. These facies, with higher fracture porosity could represent important HC storage intervals within the reservoir. Laterally discontinuous coarse rudist associations and coarse-grained sedimentary facies are characterised by scarce fracturing but also by relatively good matrix porosity. These facies can also

Simulations often generate large amounts of data that require use of SciVis techniques for effective exploration of simulation results. In some cases, like 1D theory of fluid dynamics, conventional SciVis techniques are not very useful. One such example is a simulation of injection systems that is becoming more and more important due to an increasingly restrictive emission regulations. There are many parameters and correlations among them that influence the simulation results. We describe how basic information visualization techniques can help in visualizing, understanding and analyzing this kind of data. The Com Vis tool is developed and used to analyze and explore the data. Com Vis supports multiple linked views and common information visualization displays such as 2D and 3D scatter-plot, histogram, parallel coordinates, pie-chart, etc. A diesel common rail injector with 2/2 way valve is used for a case study. data sets were generated using a commercially available AVL HYDSIM simulation tool for dynamic analysis of hydraulic and hydro-mechanical systems, with the main application area in the simulation of fuel injection systems.

The paper describes a method developed for interactive data visualization and exploration with applications in the automotive industry. The input data set contains a large number of function graphs. Each of the graphs is characterized by a set of basic attributes. The technique that is used for visualization includes two linked views: a map view (or attribute space view), where all function graphs are represented as a point or an icon on the map, and a linked function graph view. The map view provides additional visualization possibilities and allows user interaction. Additional features like brushing in both views, graph management, and related issues like interpolation of the graphs are described.

In support of the space exploration initiative a new architecture for the production of solar cells on the lunar surface is devised. The paper discusses experimental data on the fabrication and properties of lunar glass substrates, evaporated lunar regolith thin films (antireflect coatings and insulators), and preliminary attempts in the fabrication of thin film (silicon/ii-Vl) photovoltaic materials on lunar regolith substrates. A conceptual design for a solar powered robotic rover capable of fabricating solar cells directly on the lunar surface is provided. Technical challenges in the development of such a facility and strategies to alleviate perceived difficulties are discussed. Finally, preliminary cost benefit ratio analysis for different in situ solar cell production scenarios (using exclusively in-situ planetary resources or hybrid) are discussed.

Understanding and analyzing complex volumetrically varying data is a difficult problem. Many computational visualization techniques have had only limited success in succinctly portraying the structure of three-dimensional turbulent flow. Motivated by both the extensive history and success of illustration and photographic flow visualization techniques, we have developed a new interactive volume rendering and visualization system for flows and volumes that simulates and enhances traditional illustration, experimental advection, and photographic flow visualization techniques. Our system uses a combination of varying focal and contextual illustrative styles, new advanced two-dimensional transfer functions, enhanced Schlieren and shadowgraphy shaders, and novel oriented structure enhancement techniques to allow interactive visualization, exploration, and comparative analysis of scalar, vector, and time-varying volume datasets. Both traditional illustration techniques and photographic flow visualization techniques effectively reduce visual clutter by using compact oriented structure information to convey three-dimensional structures. Therefore, a key to the effectiveness of our system is using one-dimensional (Schlieren and shadowgraphy) and two-dimensional (silhouette) oriented structural information to reduce visual clutter, while still providing enough three-dimensional structural information for the user's visual system to understand complex three-dimensional flow data. By combining these oriented feature visualization techniques with flexible transfer function controls, we can visualize scalar and vector data, allow comparative visualization of flow properties in a succinct, informative manner, and provide continuity for visualizing time-varying datasets.

This paper presents a shape-match based method of converting conventional 2D videos to their pseudo-3D versions to achieve stereo effect via stereopsis. While conventional 2D videos do not contain true 3D information or difficult to extract such true 3D information, the proposed algorithm is to exploit the tolerance of the human visual perception to estimate pseudo-3D parameters for 3D conversion. The proposed algorithm has the features of: (i) the original 2D video frame is regarded as the reference frame for the pseudo-stereo image pair; (ii) appropriate disparity information is extracted by shape-based matching inside a small library of true stereo image pairs; and (iii) the extracted disparity is then used to construct a right video frame to complete the pseudo-stereo conversion. Our experiments show that a certain level of stereo effect has been achieved for our test video set and some samples of such experiments are illustrated for visual inspection.

Interactive visual representations complement traditional statistical and machine learning techniques for data analysis, allowing users to play a more active role in a knowledge discovery process and making the whole process more understandable. Though visual representations are applicable to several stages of the knowledge discovery process, a common use of visualization is in the initial stages to explore and organize a sometimes unknown and complex data set. In this context, the integrated and coordinated - that is, user actions should be capable of affecting multiple visualizations when desired - use of multiple graphical representations allows data to be observed from several perspectives and offers richer information than isolated representations. In this paper we propose an underlying model for an extensible and adaptable environment that allows independently developed visualization components to be gradually integrated into a user configured knowledge discovery application. Because a major requirement when using multiple visual techniques is the ability to link amongst them, so that user actions executed on a representation propagate to others if desired, the model also allows runtime configuration of coordinated user actions over different visual representations. We illustrate how this environment is being used to assist data exploration and organization in a climate classification problem.

KNAVE-ii is an intelligent interface to a distributed web-based architecture that enables users (e.g., physicians) to query, visualize and explore clinical time-oriented databases. Based on prior studies, we have defined a set of requirements for provision of a service for interactive exploration of time oriented clinical data. The main requirements include the visualization, interactive exploration and explanation of both raw data and multiple levels of concepts abstracted from these data;the exploration of clinical data at different levels of temporal granularity along both absolute (calendar-based) and relative (clinically meaningful) time-lines;the exploration and dynamic visualization of the effects of simulated hypothetical modifications of raw data on the derived concepts;and the provision of generic services (such as statistics, documentation, fast search and retrieval of clinically significant concepts, amongst others). KNAVE-ii has been implemented and is currently evaluated by expert clinicians in several medical domains, such as oncology, involving monitoring of chronic patients. © 2004 ACM.

The advantage of visual data exploration is that the user is directly involved in the process of data mining. There are a large number of information visualization techniques which have been developed over the last decade to support the exploration of large data sets. The octree representation is a well-known hierarchical data structure that can be used to partition the 3D space into cubic voxels of varying sizes. In this paper, we describe a new approach that uses octree technique into data mining system. and design a 3D data exploration environment.
