Communication is a central activity in command and control. However, analysing communication using linear transcription of large amounts of sequential data is tedious and time consuming. This paper describes an alternative approach for communication analysis based on visualexploration of abstract representations of communication. It introduces a visualisation technique based on the Attribute Explorer. The technique was implemented in a visualisation component embedded in a framework for coordinated presentation of temporal data. It is demonstrated using authentic communication data from a military exercise and a rescue operation.

The resolution and accuracy provided by the existing technology for downhole (pressure and temperature) and rate measurements are unprecedented. However, while the potential benefits have been outlined, the models and processes required to reap these benefits (in particular the quantifiable ones) have not been sufficiently documented. In addition, considering the increasing number of reported work in this area, it is necessary to provided a framework for the analysis and discussion of existing and upcoming applications. This paper presents a: i) summary and classification of downhole and flow rate measurements applications, ii) a discussion of their benefits for reservoir description and production optimization, and iii) the models and processes required to obtain those benefits. The above-referenced applications are classified in three main areas: reservoir characterization, reservoir/well flow modeling, and process monitoring. The discussion of each application includes: benefits, previously reported work, required measurements and other relevant data, and a general description of the necessary models and processes. The paper is expected to be useful assessing the possible impact of investments (business cases) in permanent downhole and flow rate measurements, designing plans for the development or acquisition of applications, and establishing the knowledge requirements in the context of training programs.

A system of continuous monitoring would be desirable for early warning of distress in major engineering structures, particularly in long-duration space structures. However, the complexity of large structures and the difficulty in accessing them makes the use of traditional non-destructive evaluation, such as visual inspection and instrumental evaluation methods, impractical. An effective alternative is the use of methods that depend on vibration-based damage identification. These methods are based on measurement of changes in the modal characteristics of the structure, that is, its frequencies and mode shapes, to identify changes in its physical properties. However, vibration based damage detection still faces a number of challenges that have not been fully resolved. Some of these challenges are highlighted through modal tests designed to provide estimates of damage in a 3D eight-bay free-free frame. The construction of a finite element model of the structure and its correlation with measured test data are described. Details of tests on a healthy structure as well as on a structure in which predetermined damage has been introduced are presented. A technique of predicting damage on the basis of modal test data is described and the predictions are compared with the known damage. Some methods of improving the reliability of damage detection are discussed.

In the last several years, large OLAP databases have become common in a variety of applications such as corporate data warehouses and scientific computing. To support interactive analysis, many of these databases are augmented with hierarchical structures that provide meaningful levels of abstraction that can be leveraged by both the computer and analyst. This hierarchical structure generates many challenges and opportunities in the design of systems for the query, analysis, and visualization of these *** this paper, we present an interactive visualexploration tool that facilitates exploratory analysis of data warehouses with rich hierarchical structure, such as might be stored in data cubes. We base this tool on Polaris, a system for rapidly constructing table-based graphical displays of multidimensional databases. Polaris builds visualizations using an algebraic formalism derived from the interface and interpreted as a set of queries to a database. We extend the user interface, algebraic formalism, and generation of data queries in Polaris to expose and take advantage of hierarchical structure. In the resulting system, analysts can navigate through the hierarchical projections of a database, rapidly and incrementally generating visualizations for each projection.

As powerful as clickpath mining methods can be, they often lead to huge incomprehensible and non-interesting result sets. Our clickpath mining practice at MSN was faced with challenges of keeping analysts closer to the dataexploration process, revealing powerful insight from clickpath mining that business owners can directly act upon. These challenges stressed the importance of an interactive and visual representation of clickpath mining results. Most products today that can perform clickpath visualization do so by presenting massive cross-weaving web graphs. We present a new type of clickpath visualization which focuses only on clickpaths of interest, simplifying the visualization space while still retaining the same degree of mineable knowledge in the data. We also describe visualization techniques we have used to enhance the detection of interesting clickpath patterns from data, and provide a real-life case study that has benefited from the use of our implemented clickpath visualizer PAVE.

Having a representative workload of the target domain of a microprocessor is extremely important throughout its design. The composition of a workload involves two issues: (i) which benchmarks to select and (ii) which input data sets to select per benchmark. Unfortunately, it is impossible to select a huge number of benchmarks and respective input sets due to the large instruction counts per benchmark and due to limitations on the available simulation time. We use statistical dataanalysis techniques such as principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis to efficiently explore the workload space. Within this workload space, different input data sets for a given benchmark can be displayed, a distance can be measured between program-input pairs that gives us an idea about their mutual behavioral differences and representative input data sets can be selected for the given benchmark. This methodology is validated by showing that program-input pairs that are close to each other in this workload space indeed exhibit similar behavior. The final goal is to select a limited set of representative benchmark-input pairs that span the complete workload space. Next to workload composition, there are a number of other possible applications, namely getting insight in the impact of input data sets on program behavior and profile-guided compiler optimizations.

data from leg drop pendulum test of twenty limbs is presented. Ten of the limbs were without disability and ten were of children with spastic cerebral palsy. All data was collected while the subjects were under general anesthesia and had been given muscle relaxants. It was clear from visual inspection of the data that all spastic reflexes were removed under anesthesia. All data was fit with a second order linear equation and optimized for values of stiffness (K) and damping (B). These two parameters were then plotted against limb mass and the data was fit with 2nd order polynomials. Results show that the spastic group had slightly elevated values of stiffness and damping than the nondisabled control group but overall the shape of the curves were the same.
