Summary form only given. The development of methods to accurately and reproducibly recover useful quantitative information from medical images is often hampered by uncertainties in handling these data related to image acquisition parameters, the variability of normal human anatomy and physiology, the presence of disease or other abnormal conditions, and a variety of other factors. Several image analysis strategies are presented that make use of models based on geometrical and physical/biomechanical information to help constrain the range of possible solutions in the presence of such uncertainty. Included are approaches for image segmentation, object motion tracking, shape/volume measurement, and deformation analysis. These ideas are presented in the context of three problem/application areas within the general field of organ/tissue-level medical image analysis: (i) the characterization of cardiac function from noninvasive 4D image data, (ii) the analysis of neuro-anatomical structure from magnetic resonance images, and (iii) the development of an approach that compensates for brain shift in the image data during image-guided neurosurgery. The talk will include a description of the problem areas and visual examples of the image datasets being used, an overview of the mathematical techniques involved and a presentation of results obtained when analyzing patient image data using these methods.

Models of visual attention provide a general approach to control the activities of active vision systems. We will introduce a new model of attentional control that differs in important aspects from conventional ones. We divide the selection into two stages, which is more suitable for the system as well as explaining different phenomena found in natural visual attention, such as the dispute between early and late selection. The proposed model is especially designed for use in dynamic scenes. Our approach alms at modeling as much of a general active vision system as possible and designing clean interfaces for the integration of the remaining specific aspects needed in order to solve specific problems.

This paper presents a new approach to textual data labeling based on texture analysis. Texture is used here to show the impact of document composition on visualexploration. We demonstrate how textural properties are well adapted to typography characterization by categorizing document regions into visual text classes (such as headings, head- and footnotes, paragraphs, abstracts, etc.). We reference and classify different types of text fonts according to their visual aspect and the visual impression that emerges from the textual data. Experiments on a set of various document images show a good accuracy and robustness for our method.

This paper discusses the visualization of the relationships in e-commerce transactions. To date, many practical research projects have shown the usefulness of a physics-based mass-spring technique to layout data items with close relationships on a graph. We describe a market basket analysisvisualization system (MAV) using this technique. This system is described as the following: (1) integrates a physics-based engine into a visualdata mining platform;(2) uses a 3D spherical surface to visualize the cluster of related data items;and (3) for large volumes of transactions, uses hidden structures to unclutter the display. Several examples of market basket analysis are also provided.

The development of multimedia works presents a new range of problems associated with the visualisation of the structure of the work. Tools for facilitating this process are inadequate and make use of existing methods that have been adapted to the task. Researching the methods used by multimedia practitioners has given some insight into what would be required of such a software tool.

Qviz is a lightweight, modular, and easy to use parallel system for interactive analytical query processing and visual presentation of large datasets. Qviz allows queries of arbitrary complexity to be easily constructed using a specialized scripting language. visual presentation of the results is also easily achieved via simple scripted and interactive commands to our query-specific visualization tools. This paper describes our initial experiences with the Qviz system for querying and visualizing scientific datasets, showing how Qviz has been used in two different applications: ocean modeling and linear accelerator simulations.

This paper describes a method for visualization of multivariate data in a lower dimension, primarily in 2D. The method, called Distance Conservation with Filtering (DCF), creates a parameterized mapping of a data set in a lower dimension. Special functions, called filters, extract the most important pairs of points with distances between them to be preserved. A particular construction of a filter and the corresponding algorithm for learning the mapping parameters are described in detail. The DCF is favorably compared with other visualization methods on a number of data sets.

Space physicists have traditionally viewed their data with methods such as pixel-based contour representations (i.e. spectrograms);however with more advanced instruments being flown, a more advanced visualization method is needed. This document will identify and communicate the principles necessary to achieve the requirements of the current and future space physics community and perhaps meet the needs in other scientific arenas. The software we have developed was designed as an extensible tool from the design phase as well as being modular in respect to terms of data systems, plotting packages, and user interfaces. We will discuss some of the key design criteria used for developing the new program and the implementation details of using an open-source graphics package for our plotting requirements. In addition, certain issues in upgrading legacy applications will also be discussed.

Plant breeding trials produce quantities of data and finding the useful information within that data has historically been a major challenge of plant breeding. A recently developed graphical data summary, called GGEbiplot, can aid in dataexploration. GGEbiplot is a Windows application that performs biplot analysis of two-way data that assume an entry x tester structure. GGEbiplot analyzes the data and outputs the results as an image, and it also produces an interactive show of the data. It allows interactive visualization of the biplot from various perspectives. A multienvironment trial data set, in which cultivars are entries and environments are testers, was used to demonstrate the functions of GGEbiplot. These include but are not limited to: (i) ranking the cultivars based on their performance in any given environment, (ii) ranking the environments based on the relative performance of any given cultivar, (iii) comparing the performance of any pair of cultivars in different environments, (iv) identifying the best cultivar in each environment, (v) grouping the environments based on the best cultivars, (vi) evaluating the cultivars based on both average yield and stability, (vii) evaluating the environments based on both discriminating ability and representativeness, and (viii) visualizing all of these aspects for a subset of the data by removing some of the cultivars or environments. GGEbiplot has been applied to visualanalysis of genotype x environment data, genotype x trait data, genotype x marker data, and diallel cross data.
