This paper presents a new approach to textual data labeling based on texture analysis. Texture is used here to show the impact of document composition on visual exploration. We demonstrate how textural properties are well adapted to typography characterization by categorizing document regions into visual text classes (such as headings, head- and footnotes, paragraphs, abstracts, etc.). We reference and classify different types of text fonts according to their visual aspect and the visual impression that emerges from the textual data. Experiments on a set of various document images show a good accuracy and robustness for our method.

All traffic models for MPEG-like encoded variable bit rate (VBR) video can be categorized into (i) data rate models (DRMs), and (ii) frame size models (FSMs). Almost all proposed VBR traffic models are DRMs. Since DRMs generate only data arrival rate, they are good for estimating average packet-loss and ATM buffer over-flowing probabilities, but fail to identify such details as percentage of frames affected. FSMs generate sizes of individual MPEG frames, and are good for studying frame loss rate in addition to data loss rate. Among three proposed FSMs: (i) one generates frame sizes for full-length movies without preserving GOP-periodicity;(ii) one generates VBR video traffic for news videos from scene content description provided to it;(iii) one generates frame sizes for full-length movies without preserving size-based video-segment transitions. In this paper we propose two FSMs that generate frame sizes for full-length VBR videos preserving both GOP-periodicity and size-based video-segment transitions. First, two-pass algorithms for analysis of full-length VBR videos are presented. After two-pass analysis these algorithms identify and partition (size-based) classes of video segments. Frames in each segment class produce three data-sets one each for I-, B-, and P-type frames. Each of these data-sets is modeled with an axis shifted Gamma distribution. Markov renewal processes model (size-based) video segment transitions. We have used QQ plots to show visual similarity of model-generated VBR video data-sets with original data-set. Leaky-bucket simulation study is used to show similarity of data and frame loss rates between model-generated VBR videos and original video. Our study of frame-based VBR video revealed even a low data loss rate could affect a large fraction of I frames causing a significant degradation of the quality of transmitted video.

Brain imaging methods used in experimental brain research such as Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Functional Magnetic Resonance (fMRI) require the analysis of large amounts of data. Statistical methods are necessary to obtain a reliable measure of a given effect. Typically, researchers report their findings by listing those regions which show significant statistical activity in a group of subjects under some experimental condition or task. A number of methods create statistical parametric maps (SPMs) of the brain on a voxel-basis. However, a major limitation of the voxel-based technique is the inaccuracy of the transformation into a stereotaxic space (e. g., Talairach-Tournoux) given the wide variability in human brain structure. In order to account for this, researchers have turned to computing the statistics not on individual voxels but on predefined anatomical regions-of-interest (ROIs). A correlation coefficient is used to quantify similarity in response for various regions during an experimental setting. Since the functional inter-relationships can become rather complex, they are best understood in the context of the underlying 3-D brain anatomy. In this paper, we present a novel 3-D interface that allows the interactive exploration of the correlation datasets within a common stereotaxic atlas.

The goal of this research is to study the role and effects of the use of animated information visualization in the early stages of exploratory data analysis tasks. Despite the existence of a large body of research on information visualization, there is little known regarding how and when one should use and how to interact with animated visualization to help explore data. By animated visualization, we mean a type of information visualization technique that produces autonomous motions of representations. This research explored the issue from two aspects: what cognitive effects animated information visualization has, and what interactions people have with animated visualization when exploring data. We conducted two user studies to investigate each aspect, and identified research challenges for designing an interactive animated information visualization environment that supports the early stages of exploratory data analysis. These findings help us further study how to extend the notions developed in spatial visualization to temporal visualization - e.g. what focus+context means when applied to the time dimension in animated visualization.

The primary objectives of this project were to design and prototype 3D visual representations of: 1) time trends in information security events; and 2) mission impact of information security events. Secure Decisions, a Division of Applied Visions, Inc., interviewed several information security analysts in the US Dept. of Defense and in commercial industry and compiled a list of information requirements to meet these objectives. We then designed several temporal and mission impact visual displays, and prototyped several of them in 3D Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). Future development of mission impact displays will require that mission impact data be collected and stored in a form that can be accessed by visual displays. Secure Decisions found no readily available techniques for automatically determining mission impact, or even for determining which network resources are required by specific mission-critical tasks (i.e. mission/spl times/device dependencies). To help fill this gap, Secure Decisions outlined the types of data that an automatic system would have to generate to provide users with an efficacious display of mission impact of security incidents.

Multimedia processing is becoming increasingly important with a range of applications. Existing approaches for processing multimedia data can be broadly classified into two categories, namely: (i) microprocessors with extended media processing capabilities; and (ii) dedicated implementations (ASICs). The complexity, variety of techniques and tools associated with multimedia processing points to the opportunities for reconfigurable computing devices which will be able to adapt the underlying hardware dynamically in response to changes in the input data or processing environment. The paper proposes a novel approach to design a dynamically reconfigurable processor by performing hardware software co-design for a media processing application. As an example, the analysis of the shape coding module of MPEG-4 is chosen to demonstrate the potential for reconfigurability.

Large distributed, heterogeneous systems (LDHS's) are increasingly critical to our computational infrastructure, but security research in this area has been difficult. Traditional approaches involve time-consuming and non-repeatable red-team attacks, where results are often incomplete and difficult to interpret. An alternative involves formal analysis of models, but this approach is not feasible with dynamic, heterogeneous systems. The Agent-Based Configurable (ABC) Testbed combines modeling and simulation with innovative visualization. In the ABC Testbed, researchers can model system components at suitable levels of fidelity, execute those models, and analyze the resulting data set, which captures all actions performed by system components, as well as the causes of these actions, or events. The ABC Testbed's visualization tool represents these events as a directed graph, which permits powerful analysis, exploration, and drill-down capabilities. To date, we have developed a prototype of the ABC Testbed, and demonstrated its power by emulating a live experiment and exploring its detailed behavior.

We present a linguistic development environment for constructing and maintaining linguistic resources to identify specific semantic information among parts of text. Linguistic resources are described in terms of linguistic patterns and contextual exploration rules based on syntactic and semantic constraints. We have designed a text matching language that allows powerful operations to identify patterns by taking into account their textual context. In our model the contextual analysis of a lexical unit is not only restricted to the concepts of adjacency and concatenation, but includes also constraints based on containment, ordering and position conditions of textual units.

Interactive exploration of animated volume data is required by many application, but the huge amount of computational time and storage space needed for rendering does not yet allow the visualization of animated volumes. In this paper, we introduce an algorithm running at interactive frame rates using 3D wavelet transforms that allows for any wavelet, motion compensation techniques and various encoding schemes of the resulting wavelet coefficients to be used. We analyze different families and orders of wavelets for compression ratio and the introduced error. We use a quantization that has been optimized for the visual impression of the reconstructed volume, independent of the viewing algorithm. This enables us to achieve very high compression ratios while still being able to reconstruct the volume with as few visual artifacts as possible. A further improvement of the compression ratio has been achieved by applying a motion compensation scheme to exploit temporal coherency. Using these schemes, we are able to decompress each volume of our animation at interactive frame rates, while visualizing these decompressed volumes on a single PC. We also present a number of improved visualization algorithms for high-quality display using OpenGL hardware running at interactive frame rates on a standard PC.

We define and present a new model for semantic video compression and searching, and apply this model to several video genres, with special emphasis on instructional videos. In this model, a semantic distance based on the video genre is computed between adjacent frames in a dynamic video buffer of predetermined size, and redundant "unkey" frames leak from the buffer interior into a data structure "leakage history directed acyclic graph" (LHDAG) which records the relative importance of these frames. What exits the buffer forms a highly compressed video stream consisting of only the most semantically significant video frames, whereas the LHDAG permits efficient semantic exploration of the video interior. This novel hierarchical but context-sensitive data structure LHDAG permits the searching of the video at display rates that are proportional to visual significance, at levels of semantic density selectable by the user. The data structure is simple to create and query, and appears to be more psychologically plausible than more straightforward fixed sampling indexing schemes. We empirically display and mathematically analyze the relationships of the video buffer's leaking rate, buffer size, and exit delay, and demonstrate its performance on several extended videos. The flexibility of the method is indicated by its demonstration on two very different definitions of semantic significance: color similarity, and content ("ink pixel") similarity.
