Simple statistical techniques are investigated to support Cluster-Oriented Genetic Algorithm processes. In a real world application this analysis improves efficiency by reducing effort relating to exploration of multiple visual representations. The preliminary results suggest that the designer can easily be guided towards interesting areas of high performance regions by viewing the most appropriate two- and three-dimensional plots.

A colorimetric modeling technique is proposed to give a computational model associated with colorimetry so that the representation of color acquired from camera imaging is accurate and meaningful. First of all, the camera spectral responses are estimated and the colorimetric quality is evaluated to reveal the feasibility of this work. In the modeling process, we present a spectral matching method and an approach of determining a reference-white luminance. As a result, the acquired color and the true (or measured) color can be well coordinated, with the strength of a global illumination or display white, in a perceptually uniform color space, e.g., in CIE 1976 L*a*b* space (abbreviated as CIELAB). Then. lower-degree polynomial regression is employed to eliminate color errors due to the mismatch between spectral response functions. Experimental results indicate that the root-mean-square DeltaE(ab)* value (i.e., color error) from the degree-3 polynomial regression is less than a just-noticeable difference (about 2.3) in CIELAB. It appears that the proposed technique can establish an accurate colorimetric model for vision systems. (C) 2000 SPIE and IS&T. [S1017-9909(00)01604-4].

In this work we present an experience of using tree classifiers as a tool of multivariate exploratory analysis. It refers to a problem of image analysis, and specifically to that of identifying low-level visual features suitable to capture salient aspects of the semantic content of the images. The problem is addressed by studying the discrimination capability of the features towards classes of images semantically defined. The classes considered are the photograph, graphic and text classes.

Software visualization involves creation and display of graphical representations of software characteristics or behavior, often to assist in the discovery of software problems or unanticipated behavior. This paper presents a new approach for three-dimensional (3D) visualization (including extraction and display) of design phase object-oriented software metrics. The visualizations are designed to foster developers' intuitive understanding of the metrics and to aid in the early understanding of structural characteristics of design components. The approach utilizes the extensibility interface of a popular computer aided software engineering tool to access and automatically extract eight key design metrics from Unified Modeling Language class diagrams. Following metric extraction, 3D visualizations of these metrics are generated for each class using perceptually meaningful glyphs. Many Java programmers believe that they do not have to worry about memory management because of automatic garbage collection. In fact, many Java programs run out of memory unexpectedly after performing a number of operations. A memory leak in Java is caused when an object that is no longer needed cannot be reclaimed because another object is still referring to it. Memory leaks can be difficult to solve, since the complexity of most programs prevents us from manually verifying the validity of every reference. In this paper we show a new methodology for finding the causes of memory leaks. We have identified a basic memory leak scenario which fits many important cases, In this scenario, we allow the programmer to identify a period of time in which temporary objects are expected to be created and released. Using this information we are able to identify objects that persist beyond this period and the references which are holding on to them. Scaling this methodology to real-world systems brings additional challenges. We propose a novel combination of visual syntax and reference pattern extraction to manage this additional complexity. We also describe how these techniques can be applied to a wider class of memory problems, including the exploration of large data structures. For data with large dimensionality, placing labels is critical for users' comprehension of a scatterplot or a map of items. We propose a dynamic label sampling technique that, combined with graphical fisheye views, selects appropriate labels out of a large set of items on a map. Labels are sampled to give focus and contextual information according to users' panning/zooming and filtering operation. The paper also demonstrates an example of visualexploration with the image browser based on our technique.
