Model-based object recognition must solve three-dimensional geometric problems involving the registration of multiple sensors and the spatial relationship of a three-dimensional model to the sensors. Observation and verification of the registration and recognition processes requires display of these geometric relationships. We have developed a prototype software system which allows a user to interact with the sensor data and model matching system in a three-dimensional environment. This visualization environment combines range imagery, color imagery, thermal (infrared) imagery, and CAD models of objects to be recognized. We are currently using imagery of vehicles travelling off-road (a challenging environment for the object recognizer). Range imagery is used to create a partial three-dimensional representation of a scene. Optical imagery is mapped onto this partial 3D representation. visualization allows monitoring of the recognizer as it solves for the type and position of the object. The object is rendered from its associated CAD model. In addition to its usefulness in development of the object recognizer, we foresee eventual use of this technology in a fielded system for operator verification of automatic target recognition results. © 1995 SPIE. dataflow visualization systems such as AVS, IRIS Explorer, and IBM data Explorer have been widely used. But the inherent problems such as excessive memory usage and low run-time efficiency have imposed limitations for their use with large, time-dependent data sets. For interactive visualization, efficiency is more of a necessity than luxury. 4d2 is designed as a high-performance interactive visualization tool for timedependent 3D CFD data on rectangular grids containing multiple scalar and vector fields, as well as for timedependent 3D particle data. The visualization functions include contour plot, vector plot, slicing, iso-surface extraction, streamline integration, particle displaying, and volume rendering, as well as graphical user interface and animation control for time-dependent data sets. Several features distinguish 4d2 from other visualization tools. First, it provides a rich set of visualization functions and allows mixing of volume rendering with iso-surfaces, streamlines, particles, and so on. Secondly, many techniques are used to achieve extremely memory-efficient and time-efficient run-time performance: no data duplication is needed, hardware alpha-buffering is used to do volume-rendering, immediate graphics mode is used, and parallel algorithms are used when multiprocessors are available. This GL-based software runs on SGI workstations with both 8-bit and 24-bit graphics hardware, and is available in public domain. 4d2 has been successfully used in Atmospheric Science and Astrophysics at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and a number of other research labs. © 1995 SPIE. Extraction of transitions and edge information from signals and visual images in the presence of noise is an important class of problems in image processing. Biological visual systems posses some robust neuro-morphological functions for information abstraction. The complex architecture of the neural elements from the retina to the visual cortex are organized into receptive fields. Discriminant functions are further extended into a family of fractional discriminant functions based on the notion of fractional D operators. This paper presents the theory of fractional discriminant functions /spl Theta//sup /spl nu//[/spl xi/] which attempt to emulate the biological receptive field functionality. It employs /spl Theta/[/spl xi/] functions for the enhancement of various attributes of images which require human intervention.

We suggest a new solution to the problem of high-quality image compression; a new algorithm for gray-level image compression in the case of wavelet transform is proposed. It is based on the idea of embedding a model of the human visual system directly inside the transform process in the multiresolution analysis. The mathematical aspect is described by Bertoluzza and Albanesi (see Proceedings of conference Mathematical Imaging: Wavelet Applications in Signal and Image Processing ii, p.39, 1994) and it is briefly reviewed. The coding method used in the compression scheme is described, followed by some examples of the experimental results we have obtained.< >

An important goal of visualization technology is to support the exploration and analysis of very large amounts of data. In this paper, we propose a new visualization technique called a 'recursive pattern', which has been developed for visualizing large amounts of multidimensional data. The technique is based on a generic recursive scheme which generalizes a wide range of pixel-oriented arrangements for displaying large data sets. By instantiating the technique with adequate data- and application-dependent parameters, the user may greatly influence the structure of the resulting visualizations. Since the technique uses one pixel for presenting each data value, the amount of data which can be displayed is only limited by the resolution of current display technology and by the limitations of human perceptibility. Beside describing the basic idea of the 'recursive pattern' technique, we provide several examples of useful parameter settings for the various recursion levels. We further show that our 'recursive pattern' technique is particularly advantageous for the large class of data sets which have a natural order according to one dimension (e.g. time series data). We demonstrate the usefulness of our technique by using a stock market application.

A set of software tools has been developed to assist the neuro(physio)logist in the analysis of a series of cerebral images from single subjects by fusing sulci manually delineated on MRI brain surface into PET functional data. The procedure requires coregistered datasets and involves 4 steps: (i) segmentation of anatomical MRI data in order to extract the brain surface, (ii) generate the brain surface views by parallel ray casting, (iii) manual delineation of the relevant sulci from the surface views and (iv) fusion of the landmarks into any coregistered dataset from the same subject. The brain surface is segmented automatically from 3D MRI data using a new "Directional Watershed Transform" algorithm. From the segmented brain surface, 8 orthogonal surface views are calculated as visual support for interactive stereo definition of the major brain sulci. Each sulcus is built as a 3D trace line using a few vertices which are manually defined on one or several surface views. This technique allows one to follow the brain surface curvature rather independently of the number and the position of the vertices. The sulci are saved in an individual file for further use. The brain surface viewer is linked (via the 3D cursor position) to an independent volume viewer containing a coregistered (anatomical or functional) volume. Sulcal landmarks are finally projected onto this volume allowing further volume of interest definition. The use of the tool set is illustrated by a single subject brain activation study after /sup 15/O water injection.

This paper explores the visualization techniques, design objectives, implementation trade-offs, and results of creating visualization tools for evaluating data from a space based sensor which is estimated to produce 8 Gigabytes of data a day for approximately 20 months. Effectiveness of visualization tools is evaluated in terms of data accessibility and user control over visual information. visual presentation is also evaluated as a contributing factor to the perceived effectiveness and success of these tools.

data analysis software can be built using two differing philosophies: 1) Develop custom applications to meet each need as it arises, or 2) Develop a general toolbox to interactively build a wide variety of applications. In support of SPIRIT iiI performance assessment1, we have developed a package using the latter philosophy. A database and an analysis toolbox are paired to provide a high degree of flexibility in data retrieval, analysis and visualization. This system is integrated into SGI Explorer, which allows scientists to interactively construct analysis networks. These networks perform database queries, then apply user-selected analysis and visualization tools to the query results. The Reporter package allows interactive design of reports with multiple plots, tables and text annotations per page. The core analysis module is the Mapper, which allows the interactive transformation of 2 or 3-dimensional data into N-dimensions. Mapper allows a rich variety of conelations and relationships in the data to be examined. Finally, custom analysis networks may be saved and distributed within the user community. This package has proven an effective support for the rapidly-changing needs of SPiRIT iiI analysis. Due to its general nature, it also has promise for broader uses.

This paper addresses an example of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data management and processing using standard open systems. The SAR data Quality analysis application, subject of this paper, has been created by TELESPAZIO through the skill matured in the framework of the developing of ground stations devoted to the acquisition, processing and archiving of ERS-1 SAR satellite data. The SAR data Quality analysis application includes SAR data decoding, visualization of whole image with the related characteristics, visualization of a zoomed portion of the image, Impulse Response Function analysis of any pixel of the image and quality analysis report generation and printing. The SAR data Quality analysis application is built on an image processing library, called TELIMAGO, resulted from a research and development program, that provides to the application developers of a set of standard tools (including user-friendly interface objects, data input/output management, display management and data conversion tools), written in ANSI C language using OSF/Motif as graphical user interface, X Window System as graphic environment and UNIX as operating system. The SAR data Quality analysis application is essentially dedicated to SAR data users and investigators who want to decode ERS-1 data products, obtaining both image data and relevant ancillary data to be analyzed according to the SAR Quality Requirement Parameters, defined by European Space Agency. © 1994 SPIE. Recent efforts in visualization have concentrated on high volume data sets from numerical simulations and medical imaging. There is another large class of data, characterized by their spatial sparsity with noisy and possibly missing data points, that also need to be visualized. Two places where these type of data sets can be found are in oceanographic and atmospheric science studies. In such cases, it is not uncommon to have on the order on one percent of sampled data available within a space volume. Techniques that attempt to deal with the problem of filling in the holes range in complexity from simple linear interpolation to more sophisticated multiquadric and optimal interpolation techniques. These techniques will generally produce results that do not fully agree with each other. To avoid misleading the users, it is important to highlight these differences and make sure the users are aware of the idiosyncrasies of the different methods. This paper compares some of these interpolation techniques on sparse data sets and also discusses how other parameters such as confidence levels and drop-off rates may be incorporated into the visual display.
