Remote sensing techniques are slowly finding their way into the representation of potential field data. In order to build images of such data it is necessary to finely interpolate between the survey data points. We us...

In this paper we present a system which utilizes vision and touch for object apprehension. We define apprehension as the determination of the properties of an object and the relationships among these properties. This is in contrast to recognition, which goes a step further in the determination process by attaching a label to the object as a whole. Vision is used to to obtain initial information about the object, including position, two dimensional segmentation, and three dimensional edge analysis. This data is then used to guide an active tactile system in its exploration of the object. The visual and tactile data are combined into a spatial polyhedral representation designed to allow further exploration of the object, as well as high level reasoning about the object and its components.
During the past tew years a new seismic technology has come of age: This new technology has neen called by many names (seismic lithOlogy, amplitude vs. offset, Poisson's ratio analysis, etc.) and has been very eff...

An Apple ii microcomputer-based software package for analysis of digital data developed at the University of Oklahoma, The Digital Image analysis System (DIAS), provides a relatively low-cost, portable alternative to large, dedicated minicomputers for digital image processing education. Digital processing techniques for analysis of Landsat MSS data and a series of tutorial exercises for exploration geologists are described and evaluated. DIAS allows in-house training that does not interfere with computer-based prospect analysis objectives.

ii Challenges in data Mapping Part ii deals with one of the most challenging tasks in Interactive visualization, mapping and teasing out information from large complex datasets and generating visual representations. This section consists of four chapters. Binh Pham, Alex Streit, and Ross Brown provide a comprehensive requirement analysis of information uncertainty visualizations. They examine the sources of uncertainty, review aspects of its complexity, introduce typical models of uncertainty, and analyze major issues in visualization of uncertainty, from various user and task perspectives. Alfred Inselberg examines challenges in the multivariate dataanalysis. He explains how relations among multiple variables can be mapped uniquely into ?-space subsets having geometrical properties and introduces Parallel Coordinates meth- ology for the unambiguous visualization and exploration of a multidimensional geometry and multivariate relations. Christiaan Gribble describes two alternative approaches to interactive particle visualization: one targeting desktop systems equipped with programmable graphics hardware and the other targeting moderately sized multicore systems using pack- based ray tracing. Finally, Christof Rezk Salama reviews state-of-the-art strategies for the assignment of visual parameters in scientific visualization systems. He explains the process of mapping abstract data values into visual based on transfer functions, clarifies the terms of pre- and postclassification, and introduces the state-of-the-art user int- faces for the design of transfer functions.

The present volume is intended both as a report on, and an authoritative reference guide to, the present status of the closely connected fields of Guidance and Control, particularly as related to missiles and space vehicles. Like its predecessor in the series, Volume 8, this volume had its genesis in a Specialist conference that was held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in August 1963. Although in no sense a proceedings of this conference, the present volume uses the same subdivisions of technology, i.e., Attitude Control, Inertial Guidance, Onboard Techniques, Manned Control, Deep Space Guidance and Navigation, Rendezvous, and Landing. To set the stage and to orient those readers who may not have had exposure to the more rapidly growing areas, the Editors have invited certain introductory review articles. They will assist the reader's entry into the subject and into the literature, and in addition they contain information basic to the more complex situations covered in the succeeding papers. In the selection of papers the guiding rule has been the exposure of diverse lines of inquiry, with particular attention given to those current lines of research that appear to be most promising.
