Exploring large datasets and identifying meaningful information is still an active topic in many application fields. Dealing with large datasets is currently not only a matter of simply collecting and structuring data for retrieval, but sometimes it also requires the provision of adequate means for guiding the user through the exploration process. visualizations have shown to be an effective method in this context, the reason being that since they are grounded on visual cognition, people understand them and can naturally perform visual operations such as clustering, filtering and comparing quantities. However, systems which help us to create visualizations often require specific knowledge in data analysis, which ordinary users typically do not possess. To address this gap, we propose a system that guides the user in the data analysis process. To achieve this, the system observes current user behavior, tries to infer the task of the user and recommends the next analysis steps to help her to carry out the task.

In the last decades most efforts to catalog and characterize the built environment for multi-hazard risk assessment have focused on the exploration of census data, cadastral datasets, and local surveys. The first approach is only updated every 10 years and does not provide building locations, the second type of data is only available for restricted urban centers, and the third approach requires surveyors with an engineering background, which is cost-prohibitive for large-scale risk studies. It is thus clear that methods to characterize the built environment for large-scale risk analysis at the asset level are currently missing, which hampers the assessment of the impact of natural hazards for the purposes of risk management. Some recent efforts have demonstrated how deep learning algorithms can be trained to recognize specific architectural and structural features of buildings, which is needed for earthquake risk analysis. In this paper we describe how convolutional neural networks can be combined with data from OpenStreetMap and Google Street View to help develop exposure models for multi-hazard risk analysis. This project produced an original comprehensively annotated (15 characteristics) dataset of approximately 5000 images of buildings from the parish of Alvalade (Lisbon, Portugal). The dataset was used to train and test different deep learning networks for building exposure models. The best results were obtained with ResNet50V2, InceptionV3 and DenseNet201, all with accuracies above 82%. These results will support future developments for assessing exposure models for seismic risk analysis. The novelty of our work consists in the number of characteristics of the images in the dataset, the number of deep learning models trained and the number of classes that can be used for building exposure models.

During a computer security investigation, a security analyst has to explore the logs available to understand what happened in the compromised system. For such tasks, visual analysis tools have been developed to help with log exploration. They provide visualisations of aggregated logs, and help navigate data efficiently. However, even using visualisation tools, the task can still be difficult and tiresome. The amount and the numerous dimensions of the logs to analyse, the potential stealthiness and complexity of the attack may end with the analyst missing some parts of an attack. We offer to help the analyst finding the logs where her expertise is needed rapidly and efficiently. We design a recommender system called KRAKEN that links knowledge coming from advanced attack descriptions into a visual analysis tool to suggest exploration paths. KRAKEN confronts real world adversary knowledge with the investigated logs to dynamically provide relevant parts of the dataset to explore. To evaluate KRAKEN we conducted a user study with seven security analysts. Using our system, they investigated a dataset from the DARPA containing different Advanced Persistent Threat attacks. The results and comments of the security analysts show the usability and usefulness of the recommender system. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

To explore the research foundation of experience design through the traceability research of experience design and to clarify the context, boundaries, and connections between different research topics. The integrated advantages of both CiteSpace and VosViewer to draw a knowledge map of related literature on experience design, based on the retrieval results of academic literature related to experience design in the Web of Science academic engine. data and visualization of the research results sort out the highly cited literature on experience design to illustrate bibliometric atlas. The induction method is used to track the four main related fields of experience design, based on quantitative data analysis, combined with our cognition of experience design. From the perspective of the development context and trend of experience design, the experience economy is the commodity experience scenario. The economy determines product form and then design content. The transformation of user experience design to experience design corresponds to changing people's material needs to spiritual needs. Experience management based on process optimization expands the commercialization field of experience design. From the perspective of knowledge cognition and exploration of experience design, macro-leveled experience design coordinates the system and the world, focusing on the long-term construction of macroecology and human cultural environment;meso-experience design tends to be a system centered on customer experience Management;micro-experience design focuses on a complete experience that has a specific meaning or impact on the individual.

Creating and editing multi-dimensional data visualizations with current tools typically involves complex interactions. We present VizInteract, an interactive data visualization tool for touch-enabled displays. VizInteract supports efficient multi-touch data exploration through rapid construction of and interaction with multi-dimensional data visualizations. Building on primitive visualization idioms like histograms, VizInteract addresses the need for easy data exploration by facilitating the construction of multi-dimensional visualizations, such as scatter plots, parallel coordinate plots, radar charts, and scatter plot matrices, through simple multi-touch actions. Touch-based brushing-and-linking as well as attribute-based filter bubbles support "diving into the data" during analysis. We present the results of two explorative studies, one on a tablet and another on a large touchscreen and analyze the usage patterns that emerge while participants conducted visual analytics data exploration tasks in both conditions.

Modern web applications use features like camera and geolocation for personalized experiences, requiring user permission via browser prompts. To explain these requests, applications provide rationales - contextual information on why permissions are needed. Despite their importance, little is known about how often rationales appear on the web or their influence on user *** paper presents the first large-scale study of how the web ecosystem handles permission rationales, covering three areas: (i) identifying webpages that use permissions, (ii) detecting and classifying permission rationales, and (iii) analyzing their attributes to understand their impact on user decisions. We examined over 770K webpages from Chrome telemetry, finding 3.6K unique rationale texts and 749 rationale UIs across 85K pages. We extracted key rationale attributes and assessed their effect on user behavior by cross-referencing them with Chrome telemetry data. Our findings reveal nine key insights, providing the first evidence of how different rationales affect user decisions. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

The exploration of deep learning techniques for multimodal predictive maintenance in automated production lines is undertaken, presenting a hybrid model that synergizes Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for visual analytics and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for temporal sensor data processing. The CNN is designed to pinpoint signs of deterioration and anomalies within visual inputs, while the LSTM extracts predictive patterns from sensor data that indicate equipment failure. Drawing upon a blend of publicly accessible sensor datasets from reputable sources such as the UCI Machine Learning Repository and Kaggle, enriched by an exclusive collection of imagery from a diverse set of 100 Chinese assembly plants, the integrated analysis from both models results in a comprehensive predictive mechanism for equipment malfunction. This pioneering method is intended to enhance the operational efficiency and precision of automated assembly processes through the empowerment of pre-emptive maintenance actions.

Today's manufacturing industry is shaped by the Industry 4.0 vision, which is to increase the number of individual goods produced while minimizing the production costs and time. To increase the production outcome and quality, users need to continuously monitor and adjust the entire process. While the recent advances in sensor technology can help users to collect, produce and exchange data, human beings are often overwhelmed by the amount of data being collected. Still, the human visual system is a powerful tool that can be used to decode and process large datasets. To make intelligent use of this ability, we have developed an interactive visual data analysis tool called ADAM that can support production data exploration in the aluminum industry. Furthermore, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our tool using real production data and present insights which could be gained from use of our tool by domain experts.

Amblyopia is a neurodevelopmental visual disorder that affects approximately 3-5% of children globally and it can lead to vision loss if it is not diagnosed and treated early. Traditional diagnostic methods, which rely on subjective assessments and expert interpretation of eye movement recordings presents challenges in resource-limited eye care centers. This study introduces a new approach that integrates the Gemini large language model (LLM) with eye-tracking data to develop a classification tool for diagnosis of patients with amblyopia. The study demonstrates: (1) LLMs can be successfully applied to the analysis of fixation eye movement data to diagnose patients with amblyopia;and (2) Input of medical subject matter expertise, introduced in this study in the form of medical expert augmented generation (MEAG), is an effective adaption of the generic retrieval augmented generation (RAG) approach for medical applications using LLMs. This study introduces a new multi-view prompting framework for ophthalmology applications that incorporates fine granularity feedback from pediatric ophthalmologist together with in-context learning to report an accuracy of 80% in diagnosing patients with amblyopia. In addition to the binary classification task, the classification tool is generalizable to specific subpopulations of amblyopic patients based on severity of amblyopia, type of amblyopia, and with or without nystagmus. The model reports an accuracy of: (1) 83% in classifying patients with moderate or severe amblyopia, (2) 81% in classifying patients with mild or treated amblyopia;and (3) 85% accuracy in classifying patients with nystagmus. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that defines a multi-view prompting framework with MEAG to analyze eye tracking data for the diagnosis of amblyopic patients.
