In the competitive retail industry, improving customer experience is essential for increasing sales and cultivating brand loyalty. A crucial determinant of consumer happiness is the shop layout, which impacts customers' navigation, exploration, and interaction with merchandise. Traditional store layouts are often inflexible and do not adjust to evolving customer behaviour, hence diminishing their efficacy in enhancing the shopping experience. This paper examines the use of Reinforcement Learning (RL) to create adaptable shop layouts that adjust based on real-time consumer interactions. Through the analysis of customer behaviour and feedback, RL algorithms may dynamically modify the layout of merchandise, aisles, and promotional areas, therefore optimizing the retail environment for both consumers and merchants. The RL algorithm analyses historical data, progressively optimizing store layouts to correspond with consumer preferences, so improving the entire shopping experience. It provides substantial advantages, such as enhanced consumer involvement, more operational efficiency, and elevated revenue designs. It examines the potential of RL in revolutionizing retail settings in optimizing adaptable shop layouts and its effects on consumer happiness and corporate performance.

Based on the relevant papers and citation data on the application of the metaverse in education published in SSCI and SCI-E in Web of Science from 2011 to 2024, this study uses VOSviewer and CiteSpace for visual analysis. From the perspectives of literature authors, countries, research hotspots, and research trend evolution, the mainstream research hotspots in this field are summarized to grasp the development pulse of this field. Research has found that: (1) The application of the metaverse in education has received increasing attention in the academic community. Countries/affiliated institutions located in the same region are close partners in scientific cooperation; (2) There is a clear evolutionary path in the research focus, shifting from understanding the educational potential of the metaverse to understanding its application value and its impact on learner performance and perception; (3) The application of the metaverse in education requires further exploration of future directions to address challenges.

Diurnal cycles are the main factor determining the rain pattern in the Indonesian maritime continent. In-depth research regarding diurnal rainfall patterns is very important for strategic planning of urban area development. This study analyzes the influence of the season on diurnal rainfall patterns in the New Capital City of Indonesia (IKN) based on Integrated Multi-satellite Retrievals for GPM (IMERG) data from January 2001 to April 2019 with a data resolution of 0.1°–30 min. analysis of the influence of the season on the diurnal pattern was observed based on the parameters of precipitation amount (PA), precipitation frequency (PF), and precipitation intensity (PI). An increase in PA and PF values was observed from November to May, while a decrease in PA and PF values was observed from June to October. The highest increases in PA and PF values were observed in March, April, and December, which are consistent with the peak of seasonal rainfall in IKN. The dominant increase in PA and PF values in that month was caused by an increase in the percentage of occurrence of long-duration (> 6 h) rainfall. On the other hand, an increase in the value of PI shows a non-uniform pattern following the season which indicates the season factor is not the main triggering factor of PI. Furthermore, the seasonal factor also affects the time of the diurnal rain peak in IKN. Peak rainfall is observed during July–August [1300–1400 local solar time (LST)] compared to other months (1500–1600 LST). The earlier diurnal peak time of rainfall is a result of reduced cloud cover during July–August, which intensifies solar insolation and accelerates the attainment of thermal contrast. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

We demonstrate QeNoBi, a system for mining and querying customer behavioral patterns. QeNoBi combines an interactive visual interface, on-demand mining, and efficient top-k processing, to provide the exploration of customer behavior over time. QeNoBi relies on two distinct data models: a customer-centric graph that represents customers with similar purchasing behaviors and is annotated with a change algebra to reflect their behavior evolution, and product-centric time series that reflect the evolution of customer purchases over time. Users can query both representations along three dimensions: shape (the sketched trend of the behavior), scope (the set of customers/products of interest), and time granularity. QeNoBi provides a holistic behavior exploration capability by allowing users to seamlessly switch between customer-centric and product-centric views in a coordinated manner, thereby catering to various needs. In response to the existing university book recommendation systems that mostly recommend readers based on library resources and lack exploration of recommended books, this paper proposes a system service architecture that accurately pushes both readers and libraries simultaneously. The system is designed using technologies such as web spiders, big data, NLP, and visual analysis. The system integrates reader data entry, web crawler, user profile, book similarity measurement, and intelligent push functions. Book managers can use the system to push books accurately and discover recommended books. The system fully utilizes book attribute data and reader attribute data, avoiding common cold start issues in recommendation systems, and providing support for improving the service level of the library and scientifically allocating collection resources.

A city’s history and culture studies involves understanding the literary works and historical events that have shaped the city’s identity. Increased availability of quantitative historical data has provided new opportunities. Taking Nanjing as an example, this paper proposes EmoGeoCity, a visual analytics system to study a city’s cultural and historical evolution, through the use of digital humanities methods and emotional geography. The system incorporates sentiment analysis into historical research to quantify the emotional content of works and synthesize an overall emotion trend within a specific location. A dynamic emotional map, integrating locations, works, and events, enables a macroscopic observation of city emotions over time. An emotional polyline is designed to provide a microscopic interpretation of the emotion trend of a single location. exploration through the system reveals the evolution of the city from an emotional geographic perspective, which gives insights for humanities researchers studying a city’s history and literature, as well as for the general public interested in gaining knowledge on historical sites. Case and user studies illustrate the effectiveness and usability of our system.

Many literature enthusiasts join communities to discuss their favourite fictional characters and novels, but meaningful insights may be slow to achieve and share when attempting to recall or verify the textual basis of their personal perspectives. Information visualisations can present text-derived data to make its summarisation and exploration both accessible and intuitive, yet visualisations of literary works are mostly tailored to expert workflows. This design study addresses this gap, comprehensively detailing our process of uncovering the tasks, data, and visual design requirements to implement Clover Connections, a visualisation of text-derived data for non-experts. Its layout features clover-shaped glyphs, storylines, and arcs to visually represent and connect temporal, social and personal data on characters in novels, which we demonstrate using datasets built from two popular novels. A formative user evaluation study with non-expert participants showed Clover Connections supports multiple general character analysis tasks, and provided qualitative insights that encourage future work.

This comprehensive review paper explores the state of the art in visual localization and navigation, drawing on the principles and methodologies of three significant deep learning networks: visual Localization Network (VLocNet), Deep Fusion Network (DFNet), and Hybrid Frontend Network (HFNet). Each of these networks demonstrates the application of deep learning to spatial awareness and navigation tasks in unique and significant ways. Rather than an exhaustive dissection of these networks, the paper provides an encompassing overview, illuminating their underlying principles, architectural design, and their relative performance within the field. Additionally, the paper delves into the practical implications of these networks, examining their applications in diverse real-world scenarios. It underlines this examination with a comprehensive analysis of existing literature and experimental results, intended to impart a profound understanding of these networks' strengths, limitations, and potential application areas. Ultimately, this review aims to present a valuable compass to researchers navigating the evolving landscape of advancements in visual localization and navigation, thereby fostering enriched understanding and facilitating future exploration and development in this compelling field.

This paper presents a solution for the autonomous exploration and inspection of Ballast Water Tanks (BWTs) of marine vessels using aerial robots. Ballast tank compartments are critical for a vessel's safety and correspond to confined environments often connected through particularly narrow manholes. The method enables their volumetric exploration combined with visual inspection subject to constraints regarding the viewing distance from a surface. We present evaluation studies in simulation, in a mission consisting of 18 BWT compartments, and in 3 field experiments inside real vessels. The data from one of the experiments is also post-processed to generate semantically-segmented meshes of inspection-important geometries. Geometric models can be associated with onboard camera images for detailed and intuitive analysis.

The current research on acoustic properties in singing voice analysis has mainly focused on individual song segments, and analysed them using simple data tables and basic charts. However, there has been limited exploration of comparing data from multiple sources, and visual analysis in crossover singing has been either too simplistic or too complex to provide a comprehensive view. This study aims to address this gap by incorporating song segments from different musical styles and utilising an innovative graph drawing method to generate interactive graphs for comprehensive musical data analysis. The findings provide additional support for existing statements in the field of musical data analysis, and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed graph method for analysing multiple song segments. At this stage, the study's findings confirm that the formant frequency $F_exploration$ of singing across styles is less modified, but $F_analysis-F_analysis$ varies in styles singing in English. Additionally, the formant frequency in Mandarin and Cantonese singing may be associated with pitch. The study also identifies that visualised graphs can produce similar results as current vocal research and are convenient for reading multiple data simultaneously. The methodology has the potential to be extended to other areas of musical visualisation to uncover insights from complex music datasets.
