The usage of the smart IoT devices has introduced the appearance of new hazardous scenarios of disruption, including possible attacks on heating, ventilation and conditioning (HVAC) systems. The visualization-driven approaches may greatly facilitate the work of analyst when revealing anomalies in dataset especially when there is no or little prior information about the HVAC system functioning. The paper presents an approach to the HVAC data analysis that enables automated search of the days with similar HVAC functioning patterns based on image similarity analysis. The core idea of the approach is to form graphical presentation of the HVAC data for each day and then assess their similarity by calculating structural similarity index for each generated image. Days characterized by high level of dissimilarity can be considered as anomalous ones requiring particular attention of an analyst. To test the approach proposed, we used the VAST MiniChallenge-2 2016 data set that contains logs from the HVAC system.

We present an observational study with domain experts to understand how augmented reality (AR) extensions to traditional PC-based data analysis tools can help particle physicists to explore and understand 3D data. Our goal is to allow researchers to integrate stereoscopic AR-based visual representations and interaction techniques into their tools, and thus ultimately to increase the adoption of modern immersive analytics techniques in existing data analysis workflows. We use Microsoft's HoloLens as a lightweight and easily maintainable AR headset and replicate existing visualization and interaction capabilities on both the PC and the AR view. We treat the AR headset as a second yet stereoscopic screen, allowing researchers to study their data in a connected multi-view manner. Our results indicate that our collaborating physicists appreciate a hybrid data exploration setup with an interactive AR extension to improve their understanding of particle collision events.

The detailed analysis of tissue composition is crucial for the understanding of tissue functionality. For example, the location of immune cells related to a tumour area is highly correlated with the effectiveness of immunotherapy. Therefore, experts are interested in presence of cells with specific characteristics as well as the spatial patterns they form. Recent advances in single-cell imaging modalities, producing high-dimensional, high-resolution images enable the analysis of both of these features. However, extracting useful insight on tissue functionality from these high-dimensional images poses serious and diverse challenges to data analysis. We have developed an interactive, data-driven pipeline covering the main analysis challenges experts face, from the pre-processing of images via the exploration of tissue samples to the comparison of cohorts of samples. All parts of our pipeline have been developed in close collaboration with domain experts and are already a vital part in their daily analysis routine. © 2021 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2021 The Eurographics Association.

Today’s analytics environments are characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity in terms of data systems, formats and types of analysis. Many occasions call for rapid, ad hoc, on demand construction of a data model that represents (parts of) the data infrastructure of an organization, including ML tasks. This data model is given to data scientists to play with (express reports, build ML models, explore, etc.) We present a novel graph-based conceptual model, the data Virtual Machine (DVM) representing data (persistent, transient, derived) of an organization. A DVM can be built quickly and agilely, offering schema flexibility. It is amenable to visual interfaces for schema and query management. dataframing, a frequent querying/preprocessing task in analytics applications, is usually carried out by experienced data engineers employing SQL (in the presence of a relational data warehouse) or Python/R: a procedural approach with all the known drawbacks. dataframes over DVMs are expressed declaratively - and visually, via a simple and intuitive tool. This way, non-IT experts can be involved in dataframing. In addition, query evaluation takes place within an algebraic framework with all the known benefits. I.e. a DVM enables the delegation of data engineering tasks to simpler users. We have seen analogous cases in the past, e.g. with the introduction of SQL. Finally, a DVM offers a formalism that facilitates data sharing, data portability and a single view of any entity – because a DVM’s node is an attribute and an entity at the same time. In this respect, DVMs can excellently serve as a data virtualization technique, an emerging trend in the industry. We argue that DVMs can have a significant practical impact in today’s big data environments.

Understanding the behavior of non-human primates is crucial for improving animal welfare, modeling social behavior, and gaining insights into distinctively human and phylogenetically shared behaviors. However, the lack of datasets on non-human primate behavior hinders in-depth exploration of primate social interactions, posing challenges to research on our closest living relatives. To address these limitations, we present ChimpACT, a comprehensive dataset for quantifying the longitudinal behavior and social relations of chimpanzees within a social group. Spanning from 2015 to 2018, ChimpACT features videos of a group of over 20 chimpanzees residing at the Leipzig Zoo, Germany, with a particular focus on documenting the developmental trajectory of one young male, Azibo. ChimpACT is both comprehensive and challenging, consisting of 163 videos with a cumulative 160,500 frames, each richly annotated with detection, identification, pose estimation, and fine-grained spatiotemporal behavior labels. We benchmark representative methods of three tracks on ChimpACT: (i) tracking and identification, (ii) pose estimation, and (iii) spatiotemporal action detection of the chimpanzees. Our experiments reveal that ChimpACT offers ample opportunities for both devising new methods and adapting existing ones to solve fundamental computer vision tasks applied to chimpanzee groups, such as detection, pose estimation, and behavior analysis, ultimately deepening our comprehension of communication and sociality in non-human primates.

This paper presents the exploration and analysis of alternative workflows in studying acoustics in architectural models, utilized in the development of the author's thesis project. Acoustic simulation software allows professionals to better understand the effects of different acoustic strategies on the overall aural experience of the space. These results are often presented as quantitative data, and auralisation programs cut back on visual representation for acoustic accuracy. The objective of this investigation is to explore the possibility of utilizing Unreal Engine as an acoustic simulation software that provides both quantitative data and an immersive understanding of the audio-visual experience of a space designed. © 2020 and published by the Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia (CAADRIA), Hong Kong.

Diabetes is a long-term disease characterized by high blood sugar and has risen as a public health problem globally. Exploring and analyzing diabetes data is a timely concern because it may prompt a variety of serious illnesses, including stroke, kidney failure, heart attacks, etc. Several existing pieces of research have revealed that diabetes data, such as systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), weight, height, age, etc., can provide insightful information about patients diabetes states. However, very few studies have focused on visualizing diabetes mellitus (DM) insights to support healthcare administrator (HA)’s goals adequately, such as (i) decision-making, (ii) identifying and grouping associated factors, and (iii) analyzing large data effectively remains unexplored. This study aims to design an interactive visualization system (Vis) to explore diabetes mellitus (DM) insights and its associated factors in Bangladesh. In this study, first, a case study method has employed to understand diabetes data. Second, we examine the potential of user-centered technology in addressing these challenges and design a Vis named “DiaVis” to process and present raw data in the form of graphics, graphs, and processed text, as well as a variety of user interaction possibilities. It helps to extract valuable data and present it in a simple and easy-to-understand way. Moreover, we highlight some key insights from our study that may help explore the healthcare community. A user study with 20 individuals is used to evaluate our system. By allowing iterative exploration and modification of data in a dashboard with multiple-coordinated views, the DiaVis system improves the flow of visual analysis. This study suggests that the healthcare community should pay more attention to developing appropriate policy measures to reduce the risk of DM.

Making large sets of digitized cultural heritage data accessible is a key task for digitization projects. While the amount of data available through print media is vast in humanities, common issues arise as information available for the digitization process is typically fragmented. One reason is the physical distribution of data through print media that has to be collected and merged. Especially, merging causes issues due to differences in terminology, hampering automatic processing. Hence, digitizing musicological data raises a broad range of challenges. In this paper, we present the current state of the on-going musiXplora project, including a multi-faceted database and a visual exploration system for persons, places, objects, terms, media, events, and institutions of musicological interest. A particular focus of the project is using visualizations to overcome traditional problems of handling both, vast amounts and anomalies of information induced by the historicity of data. We present several use cases that highlight the capabilities of the system to support musicologists in their daily workflows.

The Sulige Gas Field is the largest tight gas field in China, which has the production capacity of 23 billion square meters in 2013. The gas field enters a stable production phase and the gas wells numbers exceed 10,000. Due to the tight reservoir and strong heterogeneity, the daily gas production is low and drop fast in early period. The low production wells increase year by year, bringing big challenge to fine gas well management and gas field stable production. In order to management each well scientifically and fully, by combination of reservoir geology, production history, process technology, et al., the paper bases on systematic analysis of the gas wells produced for more than 10 years, firstly proposes the life cycle management concept of gas wells and divides the entire life cycle of gas wells into three phases: early, middle and late. On the basis of reservoir geological research, making reasonable deployment of well locations in early phase, improving the proportion of type I and ii wells. By combination of early production data, making well classification and reasonable capacity. In order to extend the continuous production time of gas wells, the middle phase uses geology data and production history to appraise production index for wells and block, such as dynamic reserve, decline rate, et al. Optimizing the opening system in the late stage, by combination of economy appraisal, choosing suitable drainage and gas recovery measures for different types of gas wells, in order to increase the final cumulative gas production. By analyzing the characteristics of gas well production in different periods, the focus of attention in different periods are clarified and corresponding technical countermeasures are proposed.
