Occlusion is a fundamental challenge in object recognition. Fragmented occlusion is much more challenging than ordinary partial occlusion and occurs in natural environments such as forests. Less is known in computer vision about fragmented occlusion and object recognition. Interestingly, human vision has far more explored this problem as the human visual system evolved to fragmented occlusion at the times when mankind occupied rainforest. A motivating example of fragmented occlusion is object detection through foliage which is an essential requirement in green border surveillance. Instead of detection, this paper studies the simpler problem of localisation with persons. A neural network based method shows a precision larger than 90% on new image sequences capturing the problem. This is possible by two observations: (i) fragmented occlusion is unsolvable in single images without temporal information, and (ii) colour quantisation and colour swapping is essential to force the training of the network to learn from the available temporal information in the spatiotemporal data.

This paper presents RescueMark, a web-based visual analytics tool for analyzing disaster situations and guiding emergency response. In disaster situations operators must take quick and effective decisions to solve critical problems. RescueMark provides spatial, topic and temporal event exploration supporting decision making for resource allocation and determine damaged areas of the city. We describe the dataanalysis and visualization process of the social media data applied to extract the relevant information.

In spite of recent advances in dataanalysis techniques, exploration of complex, unstructured spatial-temporal data could still be difficult. An interactive approach, with human in the analysis loop, represents a valuable add on to automatic analysis methods. We describe an interactive visualanalysis method to exploration of complex spatio-temporal data sets. The proposed approach is illustrated using a publicly available data set, a collection of bird locations recorded over an extended period of time. In order to explore and comprehend complex patterns in bird movements over time, we provide two new views, the centroids scatter plot view and the distance plot view. Successful analysis of the birds data indicates the usefulness of the newly proposed approach for other spatio-temporal data of a similar structure.

Big urban trajectory exploration extracts insights from trajectories. It has many smart-city applications, e.g., traffic jam detection, taxi movement pattern analysis. The challenges of big urban trajectory dataexploration are: (i) the data analysts probably do not have experience or knowledge on issuing their analysis tasks by SQL-like queries or analysis operations accurately;and (ii) big urban trajectory data is naturally complex, e.g., unpredictability, interrelation, etc. In this work, we architect and implement a visualization-assisted big urban trajectory dataexploration system (Vaite) to address these chanllenges. Vaite includes three layers, from data collection to results visualization. We devise novel visualization views in Vaite to support interactive big urban trajectory exploratory analysis. We demonstrate the effectiveness of Vaite by the real world applications.

Long-term drug abuse may change the brain function. In this paper, a new experimental paradigm combining EEG and NIRSIT is designed to explore target stimulus pictures-induced changes in electroencephalograms, as well as the changes in blood oxygen under near-infrared spectroscopy in drug users. The experiment divides into three stages. The first stage denotes the resting state. The task in the second stage includes induction by target stimulation pictures and neutral pictures. And in the third stage, the resting state pictures are all neutral pictures. The electroencephalograms and near-infrared data were collected in the three stages. Then an analysis was made of the ERP potential P300 of the electroencephalograms, the changes in hemoglobin concentration under near-infrared spectroscopy, and the channel time series. An analysis was made of the EEG and NIRSIT data on 120 people who were tested in a rehabilitation center according to the paradigm designed for the experiment. An analysis of the electroencephalograms in the second stage of the experiment shows that target stimulus pictures evoked more obvious P300 volatility in electroencephalograms than neutral pictures. Meanwhile, an analysis of the NIRSIT data shows that the concentration of oxyhemoglobin increased and the concentration of deoxyhemoglobin decreased. exploration of drug rehabilitation studies, laying a foundation for further predicting pathological changes in the human brain, as well as targeted rehabilitation.

Structured user model data not only allow system personalization, but also may be of interest as a source for analysis: in particular, for the study of general trends and for the detection of anomalies in preferences and mutually-referenced features among different user models. Such sources are multidimensional and interrelated, and recently started to be represented as graph-based datasets. Among the most effective ways of studying such data is visualexploration based on data-driven graph drawing approaches: in particular, node-link and node-link-group diagrams. The paper provides an overview of advanced approaches to the graphical representation of multidimensional data derived from user modeling and presents a proposal for developing flexible and scalable user interfaces for the hypergraph-based visualexploration of relations within a user model (UM). Then, we propose these principles in the visualization of an existing adaptive system.
The process of extricating relationships and interchanges via visual mapping refers to Social Network analysis (SNA). Through social network and graph theory lenses, this study explore Twitter data shortly after the a...

We present a novel environment for exploratory search in large collections of historical newspapers developed as a part of the NewsEye project. In this paper we focus on the intelligent Personal Research Assistant (PRA) component in the environment and the web interface. The PRA is an interactive exploratory engine that combines results of various text analysis tools in an unsupervised fashion to conduct autonomous investigations on the data according to users' needs. The PRA is freely available online together with some datasets of European historical newspapers. The methods used by the assistant are of potential benefit to other exploratory search applications.
