Typically, people perform visual data analysis using mouse and touch interactions. While such interactions are often easy to use, they can be inadequate for users to express complex information and may require many steps to complete a task. Recently natural language interaction has emerged as a promising technique for supporting exploration with visualization, as the user can express a complex analytical question more easily. In this paper, we investigate how to synergistically combine language and mouse-based direct manipulations so that weakness of one modality can be complemented by the other. To this end, we have developed a novel system, named Multimodal Interactions System for visual analysis (MIVA), that allows user to provide input using both natural language (e.g., through speech) and direct manipulation (e.g., through mouse or touch) and presents the answer accordingly. To answer the current question in the context of past interactions, the system incorporates previous utterances and direct manipulations made by the user within a finite-state model. We tested the applicability of MIVA on several dashboards including a COVID-19 dashboard that visualizes coronavirus cases around the globe. Our demonstration provides initial indication that the MIVA system enhances the flow of visual analysis by enabling fluid, iterative exploration and refinement of data in a dashboard with multiple-coordinated views.

In this paper, we present 'Layouts for Multiple View' (LMV), a tool that helps users build, control and save multiple view visualisations simply and easily using a bespoke grammar. The tool incorporates template multiple view layout strategies as quantified from prior research on view analysis, and the user can build different layouts by defining the grammar, or through the linked visual interface. LMV saves the multiple view layout as a JSON file, including all the details of the layout and attributes of the visualisation, which can be subsequently loaded and adapted or used to create dashboards. LMV guides the user to (i) design and control the multiple view layout, (ii) add data and allocate a specific visualisation technique for each view, and (iii) to adapt specific appearance properties of the layout. © 2020 The Author(s) Eurographics Proceedings © 2020 The Eurographics Association.

This study examines the performance of solar window films installed on double-glazed windows of typical offices in actual working conditions in a hot and dry climate. Passive thin films stuck interiorly on double-glazed windows were used to affect various solar-optical impacts including energy saving, UV reduction, and increased thermal comfort. Real-time measurements of environmental parameters, including temperature, humidity, and luminous, were performed continuously in 5-minute intervals over three summer months of June, July, and August 2019 in Kuwait and data were stored automatically through a WiFi system. Arduino-type microprocessors and various temperature, humidity, Lux, and UV sensors were assembled and programmed to transfer and store data in real-time. Temporal and spectral analyses were conducted to compare the effects of the window films on these environmental parameters. It is evident that windows film has good potential to decrease interior temperature and its variability, to save energy and reduce CO2 footprints, to save water by preserving interior humidity to level of human comfort, to restrict the solar UV rays to minimum level, and to reduce visual impacts of high solar luminous in hot-dry climates. The benefits and drawbacks of the selected windows film are discussed.

The awareness of emerging technologies is essential for strategic decision making in enterprises. Emerging and decreasing technological trends could lead to strengthening the competitiveness and market positioning. The exploration, detection and identification of such trends can be essentially supported through information visualization, trend mining and in particular through the combination of those. Commonly, trends appear first in science and scientific documents. However, those documents do not provide sufficient information for analyzing and identifying emerging trends. It is necessary to enrich data, extract information from the integrated data, measure the gradient of trends over time and provide effective interactive visualizations. We introduce in this paper an approach for integrating, enriching, mining, analyzing, identifying and visualizing emerging trends from scientific documents. Our approach enhances the state of the art in visual trend analytics by investigating the entire analysis process and providing an approach for enabling human to explore undetected potentially emerging trends.

This paper presents an overview of the ImageCLEF 2020 lab that was organized as part of the conference and Labs of the Evaluation Forum - CLEF Labs 2020. ImageCLEF is an ongoing evaluation initiative (first run in 2003) that promotes the evaluation of technologies for annotation, indexing and retrieval of visual data with the aim of providing information access to large collections of images in various usage scenarios and domains. In 2020, the 18th edition of ImageCLEF runs four main tasks: (i) a medical task that groups three previous tasks, i.e., caption analysis, tuberculosis prediction, and medical visual question answering and question generation, (ii) a lifelog task (videos, images and other sources) about daily activity understanding, retrieval and summarization, (iii) a coral task about segmenting and labeling collections of coral reef images, and (iv) a new Internet task addressing the problems of identifying hand-drawn user interface components. Despite the current pandemic situation, the benchmark campaign received a strong participation with over 40 groups submitting more than 295 runs.

With the deterioration of ecological environment and the increasing demand for aquatic products, the development of fishing remains seriously threatened from various aspects, especially for production planning and control in particular place and time. Therefore, this technical paper develops a visual platform based on Geographic Information System (GIS) aim to help managers formulate sensible policy with the intention of achieving sustainable fisheries development. The key design of this system lies in the association of attribute database and GIS technologies referring to the Leftlet map. There are mainly two contributions in this article: (i) the visualizations of aquaculture production quantity are first proposed according to the geographical location and species category;(ii) system provides the superior results of statistical analysis on user interface due to the technical processing on data association and light or color intensities presentations. Furthermore, the web service is constructed and extended on the principles of the Browser/Server (B/S) architecture whose purpose is to reach efficiency of exploitation and operations. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2020.

The manual analysis of surveillance videos is unfeasible due to the excessive amount of data, the associated subjectivity, or the eventual presence of distracting noise. Automatic summarization approaches provide little/no user interaction, limiting his/her comprehension regarding the involved phenomena. visual analytics techniques represent a potential tool for such analysis, providing video representations that clearly communicate their content, potentially revealing patterns that may represent events of interest. In this paper, we present a methodology for visual analysis of surveillance video that combines point-placement techniques and Temporal Self-similarity Maps (TSSMs) to reveal the events occurrence structure and to enhance the comprehension of their temporal properties. Experiments in several surveillance scenarios demonstrate that our proposed methodology provides an effective events summarization and the exploration of both the structure of each event and the relationship among them, allowing the security agent to filter/explore those that represent potential alert situations.

Adopting systems models for multiple incident analysis: utility and usability

Background This study aims to present two system models widely used in Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) and evaluate whether the models are adoptable to England's national patient safety team in improving the exploration and understanding of multiple incident reports of an active patient safety issue and the development of the remedial actions for a potential National Patient Safety Alert. The existing process of examining multiple incidents is based on inductive thematic analysis and forming the remedial actions is based on barrier analysis of intelligence on potential solutions. However, no formal systems models evaluated in this study have been used. Methods AcciMap and Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS) were selected, applied and evaluated to the analysis of two different sets of patient safety incidents: (i) incidents concerning ingestion of superabsorbent polymer granules and (ii) incidents concerning the interruption in use of High Nasal Flow Oxygen. The first set was analysed by the first author and the utility and usability were reflected. The second set was analysed collectively by a purposeful sample of patient safety team members, who create the National Patient Safety Alerts from incident-level data and information. All of them attended a 30-min video-based training and a 1.5h case-based online workshop. Post-workshop individual interviews were conducted to evaluate their perceived utility and usability of each model. Results The patient safety team showed overwhelming support for the utility of the system models as a 'framework' that provides a systematic, structured way of looking at an issue and examining the causes, whilst also sharing concerns regarding their usability. AcciMap was viewed useful particularly in providing a visual comprehensive overview of the issue but considered chaotic by some participants due to many arrows between factors. SEIPS was perceived easier to understand due to the familiarity of the structure

This paper describes a visualization technique designed to help work with complex diagrams containing multiple types of nodes and edges, by using a combination of visual clutter reduction and graph exploration techniques. We show its application, including preliminary evaluation, on software engineering projects data gathered from various tools and repositories used for software development. An online tool implementing the technique and plans for its extension by a connected view of time perspective data are briefly presented.
