Solar photovoltaic (PV) modules are a popular source of clean energy, and effective monitoring and optimization of their performance requires the ability to explore and analyze the measurement data from their sensors. In this work, we introduce a tool for the visual analysis of such data stored in raw measurement files, offering efficient interactive visualization directly on the files. The tool includes a soiling detection module, and novel UI modules that combine time series data visualization with advanced solar panel analytics presentation. © 2023 Copyright for this paper by its authors. visualization techniques are useful tools to explore data by enabling the discovery of meaningful patterns and causal relationships. The discovery process is often exploratory and requires multiple views to support analyzing different or complementary perspectives to the data. In this context, analytic provenance shows great potential to understand users' reasoning process through the study of their interactions on multiple view systems. In this paper, we present an approach based on the concept of chained views to support the incremental exploration of large, multidimensional datasets. Our goal is to provide visual representation of provenance information to enable users to retrace their analytical actions and to discover alternative exploratory paths without loosing information on previous analyses. We demonstrate that our implementation of the approach, MGExplorer (Multidimensional Graph Explorer), allows users to explore different perspectives to a dataset by modifying the input graph topology, choosing visualization techniques, arranging the visualization space in meaningful ways to the ongoing analysis and retracing their analytical actions. MGExplorer combines multiple visualization techniques and visual querying while representing provenance information as segments connecting views, which each supports selection operations that help define subsets of the current dataset to be explored by a different view. We demonstrate the usage of the tool through a study case where we explore co-authorship data. We assess the approach through performance metrics, temporal ordering of tasks, number of physical actions, and amount of information to be recalled in-between actions applied to the chosen visual exploration scenarios using chained views.

The smartwatch is rapidly becoming a go-to personal health tracking device, allowing for the collection of a broad range of personal health data. Yet, access to this data is often limited to discrete glanceable visualizations. This in part is due to a lack in our understanding of the queries desired to access such data. Thus, as practitioners and application designers, our ability to enable efficient exploratory interactions is limited. In this work, through analysis of a public dataset, we characterize personal health data queries desired for exploration on the smartwatch across multiple dimensions: (i) data requested and attributes of this data, (ii) aggregation methods, (iii) mechanisms for filtering, and (iv) interrogatives used. We conclude with discussion around our findings that can be utilized in future works aimed toward enabling efficient interaction with personal health data on the smartwatch.

Recent studies have outlined the accessibility challenges faced by blind or visually impaired, and less-literate people, in interacting with social networks, in-spite of facilitating technologies such as monotone text-to-speech (TTS) screen readers and audio narration of visual elements such as emojis. Emotional speech generation traditionally relies on human input of the expected emotion together with the text to synthesise, with additional challenges around data simplification (causing information loss) and duration inaccuracy, leading to lack of expressive emotional rendering. In real-life communications, the duration of phonemes can vary since the same sentence might be spoken in a variety of ways depending on the speakers' emotional states or accents (referred to as the one-to-many problem of text to speech generation). As a result, an advanced voice synthesis system is required to account for this unpredictability. We propose an end-to-end context-aware Text-to-Speech (TTS) synthesis system that derives the conveyed emotion from text input and synthesises audio that focuses on emotions and speaker features for natural and expressive speech, integrating advanced natural language processing (NLP) and speech synthesis techniques for real-time applications. Our system also showcases competitive inference time performance when benchmarked against the state-of-the-art TTS models, making it suitable for real-time accessibility applications.

Rich Screen Reader Experiences for Accessible data visualization

Current web accessibility guidelines ask visualization designers to support screen readers via basic non-visual alternatives like textual descriptions and access to raw data tables. But charts do more than summarize data or reproduce tables;they afford interactive data exploration at varying levels of granularity-from fine-grained datum-by-datum reading to skimming and surfacing high-level trends. In response to the lack of comparable non-visual affordances, we present a set of rich screen reader experiences for accessible data visualization and exploration. Through an iterative co-design process, we identify three key design dimensions for expressive screen reader accessibility: structure, or how chart entities should be organized for a screen reader to traverse;navigation, or the structural, spatial, and targeted operations a user might perform to step through the structure;and, description, or the semantic content, composition, and verbosity of the screen reader's narration. We operationalize these dimensions to prototype screen-reader-accessible visualizations that cover a diverse range of chart types and combinations of our design dimensions. We evaluate a subset of these prototypes in a mixed-methods study with 13 blind and visually impaired readers. Our findings demonstrate that these designs help users conceptualize data spatially, selectively attend to data of interest at different levels of granularity, and experience control and agency over their data analysis process. The progress in generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fueled AI-powered tools like co-pilots and assistants to provision better guidance, particularly during data analysis. However, research on guidance has not yet examined the perceived efficacy of the source from which guidance is offered and the impact of this source on the user's perception and usage of guidance. We ask whether users perceive all guidance sources as equal, with particular interest in three sources: (i) "AI,"(ii) "human expert,"and (iii) "a group of human analysts."As a benchmark, we consider a fourth source, (iv) "unattributed guidance,"where guidance is provided without attribution to any source, enabling isolation of and comparison with the effects of source-specific guidance. We design a five-condition between-subjects study, with one condition for each of the four guidance sources and an additional (v) "no-guidance"condition, which serves as a baseline to evaluate the influence of any kind of guidance. We situate our study in a custom data preparation and analysis tool wherein we task users to select relevant attributes from an unfamiliar dataset to inform a business report. Depending on the assigned condition, users can request guidance, which the system then provides in the form of attribute suggestions. To ensure internal validity, we control for the quality of guidance across source-conditions. Through several metrics of usage and perception, we statistically test five preregistered hypotheses and report on additional analysis. We find that the source of guidance matters to users, but not in a manner that matches received wisdom. For instance, users utilize guidance differently at various stages of analysis, including expressing varying levels of regret, despite receiving guidance of similar quality. The importance of disinformation identification and tracking in the information age is not questionable. War in Ukraine, information attacks in Baltic states, and a number of other disinformation attacks worldwide show that it is becoming a conventional tool in information space. In this paper, we present a disinformation analysis and tracking dashboard. It has 3 main components: Disinformation Analyzer, Match disinformation cases and Model Accuracy. The first component consists of a fined-tuned RoBERTa model for classifying textual input into fake and neutral. The second component contains semantic matching functionality for checking the semantic similarity of input text to the set of known disinformation cases. The third component includes the confusion matrix and model accuracy information. All 3 components have been combined into visual analytics platform for easy inspection and exploration of potential and known disinformation cases. The majority of the work was done during TIDE Hackathon 2023 as a part of the Disinformation Analyzer Challenge.

Teachers can benefit from the information provided by learning analytics data for multiple purposes. visual learning analytics dashboards provide near real-time information while more complex offline tools are commonly used to synthesize and transform the data gathered into interpretable information for teachers. The extended use of Learning Management Systems in universities, such as Moodle or Canvas, provides a rich environment to capture learning analytics data from students' interactions while they are progressing in their courses. In this paper, we present two different learning analytics tools aimed at teachers to obtain information about students' progress and results using data from the Moodle LMS at different stages of their learning process: (1) a progress visualization plugin for Moodle, which provides teachers with real-time information about the progress achieved by students in their courses, and the different goals set for their plans;and (2) an analytics Jupyter Notebook tool with a pre-defined set of analysis and visualizations to apply to data gathered from default activities in Moodle. The plugin is in an initial validation stage, while the analysis tool has been tested in a case study in a university course. Combined, both contributions can enrich the information that teachers have during and after the academic year, adapting their classes to better fit students' progress and needs, as well as providing overall results and comparison between groups after the course has finished.

An accurate estimation of a surgical procedure's time to completion (ETC) is a valuable capability that has significant impact on operating room efficiency, and yet remains challenging to predict due to significant variability in procedure duration. This paper studies the ETC task in depth;rather than focusing on introducing a novel method or a new application, it provides a methodical exploration of key aspects relevant to training machine learning models to automatically and accurately predict ETC. We study four major elements related to training an ETC model: evaluation metrics, data, model architectures, and loss functions. The analysis was performed on a large-scale dataset of approximately 4,000 surgical videos including three surgical procedures: Cholecystectomy, Appendectomy, and Robotic-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy (RARP). This is the first demonstration of ETC performance using video datasets for Appendectomy and RARP. Even though AI-based applications are ubiquitous in many domains of our lives, some industries are still lagging behind. Specifically, today, ETC is still done by a mere average of a surgeon's past timing data without considering the visual data captured in the surgical video in real time. We hope this work will help bridge the technological gap and provide important information and experience to promote future research in this space.
