Regional difference of the society creates movement of people across regions. Conventionally, an interregional migration data set is stored as an origin-destination (O-D) matrix, which has one row for each flow origin and one column for each destination. For example, interregional migration data within fifty states of United States generates a 50 by 50 O-D matrix, and an O- D matrix for county to county migration would have more than 3100 rows and columns. Studying these complex migration flow systems has always been challenging to scientists. This paper reports a methodology that combines scientific visualization, exploratory data analysis, dynamic graphics and projection pursuit methods to explore these migration flow systems. First, a complex migration flow data set is simplified by using a projection pursuit method. These less complex data are then represented in four graphic views: a migration flow view showing direction and magnitude of migration, a choropleth view showing characteristics of O-D regions, a statistical view of flow variables, and a statistical view of O-D attribute variables. These four views are linked by using a dynamic brushing technique, which enables the researcher to explore the relationships between the four views. These relationships can then be used as the basis for understanding the migration flow system.

The goal of the Virtual Prototyping Environment (VPE) is to decrease product development time and costs and to increase quality and flexibility by providing continuous computer support for the development cycle. Virtual prototype are directly derived from integrated CAD- Systems and enriched with simulation data. In addition, the VPE supports cooperative teams by providing different Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) techniques of shared viewing environments in combination with further communication tools for long distance collaboration. One aspect of CSCW in VPE's is multi-user and multi-application Shared 3D Environments. In the shared environment model, 3D objects from different applications can be joined into one scene that can be viewed by different users with independent or shared camera positions, enabling the distribution of visualization tasks between smaller, flexible and more specialized applications. The underlying product model of the VPE is based on the STEP standard applied to a distributed object-oriented data management approach. Taking the requirements from CE and shared 3D environments into account, we enriched the application interface to the data management with high level concepts such as object versioning, migration and consistency management, and extended the product data model to include presentation and annotation aspects.

This paper explores the way in which data visualization systems, in particular modular visualization environments, can be used over the World Wide Web. The conventional approach is for the publisher of the data to be responsible also for creating the visualization, and posting it as an image on the Web. This leaves the viewer in a passive role, with no opportunity to analyse the data in any way. We look at different scenarios that occur as we transfer more responsibility for the creation of the visualization to the viewer, allowing visualization to be used for analysis as well as presentation. We have implemented one particular scenario, where the publisher mounts the raw data on the Web, and the viewer accesses this data through a modular visualization environment - in this case IRIS Explorer. The visualization system is hosted by the publisher, but its fine control is the responsibility of the viewer. The picture is returned to the viewer as VRML, for exploration via a VRML viewer such as Webspace. We have applied this to air quality data which is posted on the Web hourly: through our system, the viewer selects what data to look at (i.e. species of pollutant, location, time period) and how to look at it - at any time and from anywhere on the web.

Information visualization faces challenges presented by the need to represent abstract data and the relationships within the data. Previously, we presented a system for visualizing similarities between a single DNA sequence and a large database of other DNA sequences. Similarity algorithms generate similarity information in textual reports that can be hundreds or thousands of pages long. Our original system visualized the most important variables from these reports. However, the biologists we work with found this system so useful they requested visual representations of other variables. We present an enhanced system for interactive exploration of this multivariate data. We identify a larger set of useful variables in the information space. The new system involves more variables, so it focuses on exploring subsets of the data. We present an interactive system allowing mapping of different variables to different axes, incorporating animation using a time-axis, and providing tools for viewing subsets of the data. Detail-on-demand is preserved by hyperlinks to the analysis reports. We present three case studies illustrating the use of these techniques. The combined technique of applying a time axis with a 3D scatter plot and query filters to visualization of biological sequence similarity data is both powerful and novel.

Wavelet transforms have a simple representation in the frequency domain (Daubchies, 1992;Veterlli and Herley, 1992;Mosher and Foster, 1995). Since wave propagation also has a simple representation in the frequency domain, frequency domain wavelet transforms provide a useful framework for studying the nature of wave propagation in the wavelet domain. In this paper, we study phase shift extrapolators for 2-dimensional wavefields that have been Fourier transformed over time and wavelet transformed over space. The wavelet transform over the space axis is implemented in the wavenumber-frequency domain by complex mulitplication of low and high pass wavenumber filter functions to form wave packet trees. To differentiate this operation from time-frequency wavelet transforms, we refer to the space-wavenumber-frequency transform as the 'beamlet transform'. The interaction of beamlet transform filter banks and phase shift wavefield extrapolators are simple complex multiplications. Wavefield propagation in the beamlet domain is complicated, however, by the digital implementation of decimation and upsampling operators used in orthogonal wavelet transforms, Unlike the filter functions, which can be viewed as diagonal matrix operators, the decimation and upsampling operators have significant off-diagonal terms. Since these operators do not commute with the filter and phase shift operators, the effects of the non-diagonal operators must be accounted for in the application of wave propagation operators. A simple (but unsatisfying) solution would be to apply forward-inverse transforms at each extrapolation step. Beamlet transforms with compact support in the wavenumber domain (Mosher and Foster 1995) provide an alternate solution. analysis of phase shift migration in the beamlet domain yields a simple matrix representation defining the interaction of filters, phase operators, and decimation/upsampling. The effects of decimation/upsampling are represented by simple folding operations.

We present the DEVise (data exploration via visualization environment) toolkit designed for visual exploration of stream data. data of this type are collected continuously from sources such as remote sensors, program traces, and the stock market. A typical application involves looking for correlations, which may not be precisely defined, by experimenting with graphical representations. This includes selectively comparing data from multiple sources, selective viewing by zooming and scrolling at various resolutions, and querying the underlying data from the graphics. DEVise is designed to provide greater support than packages such as AVS or Khoros for this type of application. First, by abandoning the network flow model of AVS and Khoros in favor of a database query model, we are able to incorporate many performance improvements for visualizing large amounts of data. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to eliminate data size limitations in a visualization package. Second, by structuring the stand-alone graphics module of most existing tools into user accessible components, users can quickly create, destroy, or interconnect the components to generate new visualizations. This flexibility greatly increases the ease with which users can browse their data. Finally, through limited programming, users can query the underlying data through the graphical representation for more information about the records used to generate the graphical representation.

We discuss how vector quantization, a technique well known for data compression, can be applied to exploratory data visualization. This technique is especially useful for multivariate imagery, because it reduces the data to a manageable size, without stripping important features. Previous visualization methods are able to combine up to three variables per pixel into an integrated display. Our vector quantization technique allows us to integrate essentially any number of variables per pixel. Furthermore, the cluster analysis inherent in vector quantization has the property of identifying relationships within the data, based on similarity of textural and sample features. We use straightforward techniques to visualize these relationships interactively. The result is a tool that applies to a wide variety of imagery visualization problems. Our prototype uses contrast enhancement, color scales, and highlighting for interactive feature extraction. We show examples from panchromatic and multispectral earth observation satellites and medical imagery.

Armstrong Laboratory is focusing on software which will allow a graphics workstation to completely create and fly through a visual database anywhere in the world in under one hour, with no human intervention. This is being accomplished by utilizing the strengths of graphics workstations, rather than emulating traditional image generator methodology. Current software development allows a graphics workstation to automatically generate a flyable, two degree latitude by two degree longitude, visual database in less than five minutes from Defense Mapping Agency's DTED (digital terrain elevation data). Sources of cultural, color, and satellite digital data which could be used to improve the coloration/texture of the terrain- skin are being sought. Good feature data would then allow the development of an automated cultural population (e.g., buildings, overpasses, and rivers) of the database. These databases possess a much higher density of terrain data (approximately 450 times the usual number of terrain polygons) than traditional flight simulation databases processed from DTED source. This higher resolution provides the opportunity to research acrobatic maneuvering strategies during combat situations. Armstrong Laboratory's rapid database generation (RDG) project also incorporates a software-controlled high resolution inlay inside a lower resolution database within a single display-channel.
