We introduce the design and implementation of Time-Elide, a visual analysis tool for the novel data abstraction of non-contiguous time series slices, namely time intervals that contain a sequence of time-value pairs but are not adjacent to each other. This abstraction is relevant for analysis tasks where time periods of interest are known in advance or inferred from the data, rather than discovered through open-ended visual exploration. We present a visual encoding design space as an underpinning of TimeElide, and the new sparkbox technique for visualizing fine and coarse grained temporal structures within one view. datasets from different domains and with varying characteristics guided the development and their analysis provides preliminary evidence of TimeElide's utility. Recently, deep reinforcement learning has become very successful in making complex decisions, achieving super-human performance in Go, chess, and challenging video games. When applied to safety-critical applications, however, like the control of cyber-physical systems with a learned action policy, the need for certification arises. To empower domain experts to decide whether to trust a learned action policy, we propose visualization methods for a detailed assessment of action policies implemented as neural networks trained with Q-learning. We propose a highly responsive visual analysis tool that fosters efficient analysis of Q-learning based action policies over the complete state space of the system, which is essential for verification and gaining detailed insights on policy quality. For efficient visual inspection of the per-Action Q-value rating over the state space, we designed three glyphs that provide different levels of detail. In particular, we introduce the two-dimensional Q-Glyph that visually encodes Q-values in a compact manner while preserving directional information of the actions. Placing glyphs in ordered stacks allows for simultaneous inspection of policy ensembles, that for example result from Q-learning meta parameter studies. Further analysis of the policy is supported by enabling inspection of individual traces generated from a chosen start state. A user study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of our tool applied to the Racetrack case study, which is a commonly used benchmark in the AI community abstracting driving control. © 2022 IEEE.

About one fourth of humans (and animals) have a highly sensitive brain: they attend and process visual stimuli with more intensity. Brain scans show that highly sensitive individuals have greater activation of neural regions involved with higher-order visual processing. It has been theorized that highly sensitive people are more creative and can benefit more from structuring information into knowledge maps compared to text. We investigate this proposition by conducting a qualitative explorative analysis of artifacts created by subjects attending a course based on design thinking. We find that highly sensitive individuals used more colors, and created visual metaphors more often compared to individuals who do not have this temperament trait. Less sensitive people created linear diagrams more often compared to highly sensitive individuals. These promising preliminary findings seem to indicate the need for visualization studies to include sensitivity as a potential important moderator of visualization effectiveness.

To support the cultivation of open source processor chip design talents and to provide a high-quality talent development and assessment model for universities to assess students of the "Computing System and Processor"course and for enterprises to recruit graduates, professionals from enterprises and teachers from universities have collaborated to design an open source processor chip design talent competency model based on the CC2020 competency model, science and engineering practice theory and curriculum theory, in order to provide relatively reasonable, comprehensive and accurate reference information for talent training and education teaching. This poster designed a competency model that includes statement, computing and professional knowledge-skills pairs and dispositions. The summary results of the visual assessment tool designed on the basis of the competency model are presented, including an initial description of student characteristics, a comprehensive task-based assessment conclusion, as well as a detailed analysis of the dimensions of computing and professional knowledge-skill pairs and dispositions and corresponding suggestions. The authors will continue to refine the quantification of student learning behavior markers to provide easy-to-operate reference data for education and teaching and to enhance the usability of the model. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Predictive maintenance refers to the ability to predict when machinery or systems need to be maintained. Making an accurate prediction is quite challenging given the costs for both over-estimating (unnecessary maintenance and reduction in availability of assets) and under-estimating (untimely breakdowns and possible loss of equipment or lives). To address these challenges researchers were able to develop new approaches for analyzing oil samples taken extracting samples from oil-wetted machinery that may provide information critical to developing predictive capabilities. We consider the problem from both supervised (though data limited) and unsupervised approaches and provide a first look into a data driven approach for identification of condition indicators. Through this work we identify a collection of candidate features that can form the basis of condition indicators for both a high level discrimination of failure vs. normal operation as well as a set for potential failure mode identification. Finally, we present an anomaly detection framework for detecting failures which can be a viable solution for an onboard analysis tool in deployed systems.

This study is devoted to the development and application of data analysis and visualization software in the process of oil testing, aiming at improving the understanding of underground reservoirs and the accuracy of reservoir development decisions. Through in-depth investigation and analysis of the requirements of geological data analysis and visualization, a powerful Oilanalysis software platform is designed and implemented, which can effectively process and analyze various types of geological data and provide intuitive and interactive visual display. The software developed in this study has flexible data import and processing functions, and can handle various geological data types including logging data, seismic data and core analysis data. At the same time, the software also integrates various data analysis and visualization algorithms, including stratigraphic modeling, porosity analysis, seismic exploration profile display and other functions, providing users with comprehensive data analysis and display tools. Through the analysis of practical application cases, the practical utility of the software in the process of oil testing is verified, which proves that it has important application value and popularization prospect.

The increasing interest in exploring the correlation between personality traits and real-life individual characteristics has been driven by the growing popularity of the Myers‒Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) on social media platforms. To investigate this correlation, we conduct an analysis on a Myers‒Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)-demographic dataset and present MBTiviz, a visualization system that enables researchers to conduct a comprehensive and accessible analysis of the correlation between personality and demographic variables such as occupation and nationality. While humanities and computer disciplines provide valuable insights into the behavior of small groups and data analysis, analysing demographic data with personality information poses challenges due to the complexity of big data. Additionally, the correlation analysis table commonly used in the humanities does not offer an intuitive representation when examining the relationship between variables. To address these issues, our system provides an integrated view of statistical data that presents all demographic information in a single visual format and a more informative and visually appealing approach to presenting correlation data, facilitating further exploration of the linkages between personality traits and real-life individual characteristics. It also includes machine learning predictive views that help nonexpert users understand their personality traits and provide career predictions based on demographic data. In this paper, we utilize the MBTiviz system to analyse the MBTI-demographic dataset, calculating age, gender, and occupation percentages for each MBTI and studying the correlation between MBTI, occupation, and nationality. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
