This paper presents the author's experience from courses that focused on the design and analysis of a complex HVAC system of a school building in compliance with National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB). The courses are designed to achieve the following teaching objectives: (i) exploration and application of NECB for the preliminary design, (ii) learning and usage of the eQuest energy analysis program, (iii) estimation of the whole building energy performance, along with the indices of performance of HVAC equipment, and (iv) learning from mistakes in the input data and HVAC system description. The students' results presented a large dispersion around the average values due to errors and misinterpretations. If only the annual whole building energy performance is analyzed, some input errors are not discovered. Other results directly extracted or calculated from the simulation results should be compared with codes requirements and indices from publications and consulting firms.

Making large sets of digitized cultural heritage data accessible is a key task for digitization projects. While the amount of data available through print media is vast in humanities, common issues arise as information available for the digitization process is typically fragmented. One reason is the physical distribution of data through print media that has to be collected and merged. Especially, merging causes issues due to differences in terminology, hampering automatic processing. Hence, digitizing musicological data raises a broad range of challenges. In this paper, we present the current state of the on-going musiXplora project, including a multi-faceted database and a visualexploration system for persons, places, objects, terms, media, events, and institutions of musicological interest. A particular focus of the project is using visualizations to overcome traditional problems of handling both, vast amounts and anomalies of information induced by the historicity of data. We present several use cases that highlight the capabilities of the system to support musicologists in their daily workflows.

Interactive visualizations are widely used in exploratory dataanalysis, but existing systems provide limited support for confirmatory analysis. We introduce PredictMe, a tool for belief-driven visualanalysis, enabling users to draw and test their beliefs against data, as an alternative to data-driven exploration. PredictMe combines belief elicitation with traditional visualization interactions to support mixed analysis styles. In a comparative study, we investigated how these affordances impact participants’ cognition. Results show that PredictMe prompts participants to incorporate their working knowledge more frequently in queries. Participants were more likely to attend to discrepancies between their mental models and the data. However, those same participants were also less likely to engage in interactions associated with exploration, and ultimately inspected fewer visualizations and made fewer discoveries. The results suggest that belief elicitation may moderate exploratory behaviors, instead nudging users to be more deliberate in their analysis. We discuss the implications for visualization design.

We present results of a detailed analysis of ten screen capture videos documenting how participants in a laboratory user study used two different interfaces to complete dataexploration tasks. Findings presented in this paper include methodological observations as well as those concerning the design of both interfaces. On the methodology side, we demonstrate that observation and analysis of videos that capture how people used a system can uncover aspects of interface learnability, different approaches to problem solving and efficiencies associated with good design. In the context of the two compared interfaces, we document the details of how participants used each interface: the affordances they used and patterns of interface exploration they followed. Combined with the data on task completion time and accuracy, these analyses provide empirical evidence to our assumptions regarding what makes a particular interface efficient. These analyses can greatly inform re-design efforts after pilot evaluations, complementing time and accuracy data. They can also help guide user training and automated user support.

The increasing availability of digital multimedia content has led to the need of new approaches for the analysis of large databases containing video and associated data, for example, subtitles. visualization provides valuable insights of such dataset, complementing approaches solely based on techniques for knowledge discovery in databases and information retrieval. Hence, visual analytics, combining automatic processing with interactive datavisualization, has proven to be an effective means to explore and interpret such data. The analysis of news corpora represents a typical task for such a scenario. Domain experts such as journalists and social science scholars require an overview of important topics, the temporal coherence of events, and they should be able to compare different topics. We present a visual analytics approach that aims to support these tasks with automatic video preprocessing, topic extraction, clustering, and dimensionality reduction. Coordinated linked views support the flexible inspection of the dataset and the processed results. We further discuss the application of our approach in a usage scenario, inspecting the dataset of a daily news broadcast of the year 2015.
