Over the past years, the visualization of large and complex data sets brought up various visual Analytics (VA) tools in order to solve domain-specific tasks. These VA tools are typically implemented as individual software components in data-flow-oriented models, meaning that data is transferred from one component to the next. While most VA frameworks rely on a monolithic architecture with features for the integration of specialized analysis methods, we consider a loose coupling of independent applications, where autonomous VA tools are used in predefined analysis sequences. To this end, we provide a characterization of the data exchange process among individual VA tools in the form of a taxonomy. This taxonomy can be used as a checklist to identify characteristics and improve the data flow of one's own multi-tool VA setup. For this purpose, we conducted a systematic investigation of the individual aspects of data exchange that are commonly found across different usage scenarios. We apply our taxonomy to three existing multi-tool frameworks, the open-source library ReVize, the toolchain editor AnyProc, and the visualization and monitoring framework Plant@Hand3D.

Virus outbreaks are threats to humanity, and coronaviruses are the latest of many epidemics in the last few decades. In this work, we conduct a non-medical/clinical approach, generating graphs from five features concluded from the COVID-19 outbreak data and local community data in NSW (New South Wales), Australia, and offering insights from a visual analysis perspective. The results show that household income, population density and ethnicity affect the infection in different areas. Features such as human behaviours need to be imported for further COVID-19 research in the data science sector. This work is an initial step into this area and allows more insights to be brought into future COVID-19 research through a visual analysis perfective.

In Content Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) systems, the visualization of queries allows to add the human visual perception in the analysis process and facilitate the discovery of knowledge. Content-based queries can be performed comparing features extracted from images, such as color, texture, and shape. In this paper we propose ways to delimit the region of interest to be visualized in the execution of queries by similarity in complex datasets. Limiting the amount of data to be visualized allows keeping the distribution of mapped data closer to the real distribution, besides allowing the application of more expensive computational methods for multidimensional projection. The proposed techniques were implemented in a prototype that allows visualizing only the region in which the query is being performed, mapping the data in three-dimensional spaces and allowing users to interact with them, being favored by human perception to improve the analysis and understanding of the data.

Bloodline: A system for the guided analysis of cardiac 4D PC-MRI data

4D PC-MRI enables the assessment of blood flow velocity vectors of one heart beat. These time dependent, three-dimensional data allow for a comprehensive analysis and contain plenty of information. So far, 4D PC-MRI is used for research purposes. One reason is a lack of standardized, easy-to-use evaluation software, which is crucial for potential application in clinical routine. In this system's paper, we present our software Bloodline, a tool combining advanced visual exploration and analysis of 4D PC-MRI data. We will put emphasis on design decisions and requirements that arose from the close collaboration with cardiologists and radiologists. The tool provides a guided data processing and evaluation workflow. The pre-processing pipeline comprises generic data import, artifact correction, vessel segmentation, surface as well as centerline extraction, cardiac cycle definition, and landmark specification. Bloodline integrates advanced visualization techniques and facilitates a dataset evaluation within ten minutes. Qualitative and quantitative flow analysis methods are provided. The focus lies on the detection and characterization of vortices, which are correlated to cardiovascular diseases. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

visual analytics have an important role in the exploration and analysis of large amounts of data in IoT applications. data visualizations can provide overviews of different aspects of data and user interaction can assist exploration. Recent advances in machine learning and Artificial Intelligence have provided methods that can be used in conjunction with visual analytics to enhance user perception. However, AI methods are often used as "black boxes", making them difficult for end-users to trust. In this paper, a novel visual analytics platform is presented, targeting two goals: a) an architecture for the creation of custom interactive visual analytics dashboards using well-defined components linked to each other, and b) the inclusion of components specifically for making AI methods more explainable. The proposed architecture and components are being used in the context of the AI4IoT pilot within the AI4EU project, which targets air quality monitoring through AI and visualization.

With vast amounts of data, comes vast numbers of problems. The process of collecting data is far from perfect, either due to human factors or technological errors, which can lead to inaccuracies and uncertainties in the data. One such issue is missing data: the absence of information. Several methods can deal with missing values, but to choose the correct approach, it is necessary to diagnose the missing data mechanisms, which describe how the distribution of missingness in a given data variable correlates to other variables. This diagnosis can be made with statistical tests or data visualization techniques. However, statistical tests provide an uncertainty estimation that is often misinterpreted, and the visualizations readily available in data analysis packages have some scalability issues, such as cognitive overload and lack of screen space. Thus, this paper proposes a visual-interactive idiom for diagnosing missing data mechanisms. The proposed solution consists of a set of visual encodings and two derived metrics that synthesizes the missing data mechanisms and the uncertainty associated with this synthesis. We present the concepts behind the visual encodings, derived metrics, and interactions of the idiom.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution 3D imaging of the human retina to understand a variety of retinal and systemic disorders. Commonly, the thickness of segmented intraretinal layers is used to assess the condition of the retina. However, the thickness data are complex and thus, need to be considerably reduced prior to further processing and analysis. This leads to a loss of information and may hinder the discovery of subtle and localized retinal changes, which are important for an early detection of certain diseases. On this account, we propose an enhanced grid-based reduction of OCT thickness data. We adapt established grid types for retinal thickness data and suggest alternative grids that capture more information. We integrate our data reduction approach into a visual analysis tool that supports an automated computation and interactive exploration of different grids. We demonstrate the application of our tool and show how it can be used to support experts in choosing and comparing appropriate grid representations for given OCT thickness data.

This research aims to design a new batik motif design by taking inspiration from the mangrove forests of Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency, and designing the application of the design motif/pattern design with the theme of the Muara Gembong mangrove forest to various forms of products. The study was conducted on the mangrove forests of Muara Gembong, Bekasi Regency, West Java Province, Indonesia. This research uses qualitative research methods, with descriptive research type. data were analyzed using descriptive exploratory analysis, consists of three stages: exploration, design, and embodiment. The Muara Gembong mangrove forest theme in the form of leaves, flowers, and roots is the basis for making a typical Bekasi motif. In addition, the application of pattern designs with the theme of the Muara Gembong mangrove forest to various forms of products, such as Paper Bags, Pillows, and T-Shirts.
