This paper evaluates the quantization process in the context of the end-to-end performance of the visual-communication channel. Results show that the trade-off between data transmission and visual quality revolves around the information in the acquired signal, not around its energy. Improved information efficiency is gained by frequency dependent quantization that maintains the information capacity of the channel and reduces the entropy of the encoded signal. Restorations with energy bit-allocation lose both in sharpness and clarity relative to restorations with information bit-allocation. Thus, quantization with information bit-allocation is preferred for high information efficiency and visual quality in optimized visualcommunication.

In this research, we analyzed conversations between a pair of subjects, under two conditions. One is face to face conversation that has a visual contact, and the other is conversation through telephone line that has not. From the recorded videotape we extracted the subject's actions especially focusing on the head movements. By comparing the dialogues under two conditions, it seems that there are two types of head movements, one is intended to give a response to his partner and the other is to send some signal. We are going to analyze how visualinformation contributes in spoken dialogue perceptions, and possibility of adopting it in a multi-modal human interface.

The wide use of virtual communication has raised a need to understand its effect on communication effectiveness and the ways its different forms influence users' informationprocessing. To that end, this study proposes the Dynamical Interpersonal communication Systems Model and posits that the amount of information directly perceived affects individual and dyadic informationprocessing. This proposition is tested by examining how visualinformation influences physiological patterns, known to underlie informationprocessing, during in-person, video, and audio-only conferences. Results indicate that while audio-only communication sustained emotional intensity better, visual-based communication required less initial cognitive effort. visualinformation in combination with physical presence (in-person communication) resulted in consistently lower cognitive effort and stronger synchronization of positive emotions, compared to contexts involving visual but without embodied information (video communication). This study shows the importance of investigating interpersonal communication simultaneously across multiple systems and at the intra- and inter-personal levels.

Haptic feedback has been integrated into Virtual and Augmented Reality, complementing acoustic and visualinformation and contributing to an all-round immersive experience in multiple fields, spanning from the medical domain to entertainment and gaming. Haptic technologies involve complex cross-disciplinary research that encompasses sensing, data representation, interactive rendering, perception, and quality of experience. The standard processing pipeline, consists of (I) sensing physical features in the real world using a transducer, (ii) modeling and storing the collected information in some digital format, (iiI) communicating the information, and finally, (IV) rendering the haptic information through appropriate devices, thus producing a user experience (V) perceptually close to the original physical world. Among these areas, sensing, rendering and perception have been deeply investigated and are the subject of different comprehensive surveys available in the literature. Differently, research dealing with haptic surface modeling and data representation still lacks a comprehensive dissection. In this work, we aim at providing an overview on modeling and representation of haptic surfaces from a signal processing perspective, covering the aspects that lie in between haptic information acquisition on one side and rendering and perception on the other side. We analyze, categorize, and compare research papers that address the haptic surface modeling and data representation, pointing out existing gaps and possible research directions.

This paper presents an efficient depth map coding method based on color information in multi-view plus depth (MVD) system. As compared to the conventional depth map coding in which depth video is separately coded, the proposed scheme involves color information for depth map coding. In details, the proposed algorithm subsamples input depth data along temporal direction to reduce the bit-rate, and non-encoded depth frames are recovered at the decoder side guided by the motion information extracted from the decoded color video. The simulation results shows the high coding efficiency of the proposed scheme, and it also shows that recovered depth frame are not much different from the reconstructed one. Furthermore, it can even provide temporally consistent depth map which results in better subjective quality for view-interpolation.

The task of image coding is to improve the efficiency of visualcommunication channels. This entails minimizing the amount of data required to transmit the information about the radiance field. We assess this task in the context of visualcommunication channel design including image gathering, coding, and Wiener restoration which results in channel designs with significantly improved performance. Conventional assessments are limited to the digital transmission channel beginning at the output of the image-gathering device and ending at the input to the image-display device. Our end-to-end assessment, in addition, incorporates these two devices. This assessment combines Shannon's communication theory with Wiener's restoration filter and with the critical design factors of the image gathering and display devices. This provides the metrics needed to quantify and optimize the end-to-end performance of the visualcommunication channel. The results are described.

This paper deals with the problem of audio and video synchronization issues for real-time audio-visualcommunication over IF-based networks. Starting from the real-time transport protocol (RTP) specifications (Schulzrinne, 1995), it provides an accurate description on how to recover a reliable absolute time reference for audio and video signals from header information in RTP and RTP control protocol packets. Such temporal informations allow to synchronize both media within acceptable perceptual bounds for reconstruction at any receiver end, in a possibly multi-point video-conference. This may occur independently of the fact that all (audio/video) packets reach destination, or that multiple replications of such packets arrive at destination. The proposed solution does not take into account the possible different delays that may be introduced between the different communication points, thus resulting eventually in potential jitters in the reconstruction of the audio-visual streams between different receivers. Each receiver handles its reconstruction independently of any transmission/processing delay. In order to ensure a better quality of the reconstructed material, priority is given to audio information. If the audio stream anticipate the video stream, the receiver simply discards video packets. Conversely, when video is ahead of audio information, the video decoding stage is interrupted till audio information arrives.
