This paper addresses theories and best practices of visual information design and delivery within the context of gas processing operations in the Middle East. communication in this situation is complex as the majority of the workforce are non-native speakers of English and from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. A model for visual content development is outlined and applied to this workplace case study. The paper contextualizes content that blends visual frameworks with relevant text in the region's lingua franca, English, to create a visual lingua franca in the workplace.

visual communication can be regarded as efficient only if the amount of information that it conveys from the scene to the observer approaches the maximum possible and the associated cost approaches the minimum possible. To deal with this problem, Fales and Huck have integrated the critical limiting factors that constrain image gathering into classical concepts of communication theory. This paper uses this approach to assess the electro-optical design of the image gathering device. Design variables include the f-number and apodization of the objective lens, the aperture size and sampling geometry of the photodetection mechanism, and lateral inhibition and nonlinear radiance-to-signal conversion akin to the retinal processing in the human eye. It is an agreeable consequence of this approach that the image gathering device that is designed along the guidelines developed from communication theory behaves very much like the human eye. The performance approaches the maximum possible in terms of the information content of the acquired data, and thereby, the fidelity, sharpness and clarity with which fine detail can be restored, the efficiency with which the visual information can be transmitted in the form of decorrelated data, and the robustness of these two attributes to the temporal and spatial variations in scene illumination.

The awareness of emerging technologies is essential for strategic decision making in enterprises. Emerging and decreasing technological trends could lead to strengthening the competitiveness and market positioning. The exploration, detection and identification of such trends can be essentially supported through information visualization, trend mining and in particular through the combination of those. Commonly, trends appear first in science and scientific documents. However, those documents do not provide sufficient information for analyzing and identifying emerging trends. It is necessary to enrich data, extract information from the integrated data, measure the gradient of trends over time and provide effective interactive visualizations. We introduce in this paper an approach for integrating, enriching, mining, analyzing, identifying and visualizing emerging trends from scientific documents. Our approach enhances the state of the art in visual trend analytics by investigating the entire analysis process and providing an approach for enabling human to explore undetected potentially emerging trends.

This paper presents a study about the use of visualizations in corporate presentations. We interviewed nine executive managers of a leading technology company about how they create business presentations for different meetings and dtfferent audiences. Thereby, we focused on which visualization types they normally use and whether they would accept new forms of visualizations such as information graphics, which are currently very popular. Due to the explorative character of the study, we used the grounded theory approach. Results show that design principles or effective visualizations are not known to the most interviewees. The interviewees rated corporate design, use of master layout, and templates higher than individually designed slides. The most popular visualization types managers use in presentations are bar and pie charts. The term "information graphic" was not known. Our conclusion leads to the following hypothesis: If a company wants to change or improve its communication, it will have to become aware of the power of visual storytelling and start an "iconic turn".

The aim of the current paper is to report on the conceptualisation of visual methods and techniques that were adapted for the monitoring of community participation on Thinkster e-learning platform. This platform supported the research activities of Masters students in Multimedia communication program at University of Aveiro (2008/2009 academic year). This research work implies two components, which are dependent. One of the components is related to the development of a Web based functional prototype in order to allow teachers and system administrators the visualisation and analysis of the users' interactions on Thinkster's communication and information system. The other component of this work is focused on the prototype evaluation with an analytical method that revealed some of the target users' expectations, opinions and their satisfaction level related to the application interface.

Evidence that visual communication preceded written language and provided a basis for it goes back to prehistory, in forms such as cave and rock paintings depicting traces of our distant ancestors. Emergent communication research has sought to explore how agents can learn to communicate in order to collaboratively solve tasks. Existing research has focused on language, with a learned communication channel transmitting sequences of discrete tokens between the agents. In this work, we explore a visual communication channel between agents that are allowed to draw with simple strokes. Our agents are parameterised by deep neural networks, and the drawing procedure is differentiable, allowing for end-to-end training. In the framework of a referential communication game, we demonstrate that agents can not only successfully learn to communicate by drawing, but with appropriate inductive biases, can do so in a fashion that humans can interpret. We hope to encourage future research to consider visual communication as a more flexible and directly interpretable alternative of training collaborative agents.

The introduction of Transformer neural networks has changed the landscape of Natural Language processing (NLP) during the last years. So far, none of the visualization systems has yet managed to examine all the facets of the Transformers. This gave us the motivation of the current work. We propose a novel NLP Transformer context-sensitive visualization method that leverages existing NLP tools to find the most significant groups of tokens (words) that have the greatest effect on the output, thus preserving some context from the original text. The original contribution is a context-aware visualization method of the most influential word combinations with respect to a classifier. This context-sensitive approach leads to heatmaps that include more of the relevant information pertaining to the classification, as well as more accurately highlighting the most important words from the input text. The proposed method uses a dependency parser, a BERT model, and the leave-n-out technique. Experimental results suggest that improved visualizations increase the understanding of the model, and help design models that perform closer to the human level of understanding for these problems.
