Marsoweb is a collaborative web environment that has been developed for the Mars research community to better visualize and analyze Mars orbiter data. Its goal is to enable online data discovery by providing an intuitive, interactive interface to data from the Mars Global Surveyor and other orbiters. Recently, it has served a prominent role as a resource center for those involved in landing site selection for the Mars Explorer Rover 2003 missions. In addition to hosting a repository of landing site memoranda and workshop talks, it includes a Java-based interface to a variety of datamaps and images. This interface enables the display and numerical querying of data, and allows data profiles to be rendered from user-drawn cross-sections. High-resolution Mars Orbiter Camera (MOC) images (currently, over 100,000) can be graphically perused;browser-based image processing tools can be used on MOC images of potential landing sites. An automated VRML atlas allows users to construct "flyovers" of their own regions-of-interest in 3D. These capabilities enable Marsoweb to be used for general global data studies, in addition to those specific to landing site selection. As of September 2002, over 70,000 distinct users from NASA, USGS, academia, and the general public have accessed Marsoweb.

In various medical fields vascular structures have to be examined with usually two-dimensional views which present imaging techniques produce. The interpretation of the data can be supported by 3-dimensional visualization techniques. The further analysis requires often the attributation of the particular functional or anatomical entities. To attribute these interactively we developed two different visualization strategies. In the first one the shape of the structures is modelled with OpenGL achieving very fast response times, most notably during the navigation. The second strategy, the direct rendering of the volume, benefits from the accurate reproduction of the vascular structures. Although the rendering needs much more time, the strategy provides similar response times for the attributation. Thus, the strategies complement one another. © 2002, The authors.

Organizations large and small continuously strive to improve strategic decision-making. Strategic decisionmaking (distinguished from operational decision making) involves making substantial investments of resources over long periods of time before results are evident. These decisions are made using quantitative and qualitative information - experience, intuition, and subjective assessment. These are people decisions, not decisions made by machines. So, how can data interfaces be designed to support these most critical decisions of the organization? This case study looks at approaches taken with one R&D (research and development) client to address their key strategic decisions: whether to move research efforts into the next stage of development or cancel the project. We will discuss how we've used web-based interface technologies to create visual metaphors for data including: visualizing time, collaborating, and modeling scenarios. We'll also demonstrate approaches to embedding more abstract constructs like decision theory, statistical analysis, and competitive advantage into these interfaces. © 2002 American Institute of Graphic Arts.

H-MDS: a new approach for interactive visualization with multidimensional scaling in the hyperbolic space

We introduce a novel projection-based visualization method for high-dimensional data sets by combining concepts from MDS and the geometry of the hyperbolic spaces. This approach hyperbolic multi-dimensional scaling (H-MDS) is a synthesis of two important concepts for explorative data analysis and visualization: (i) multi-dimensional scaling uses proximity or pair distance data to generate a low-dimensional, spatial presentation of the data;(ii) previous work on the "hyperbolic tree browser" demonstrated the extraordinary advantages for an interactive display of graph-like data in the two-dimensional hyperbolic space (H-2). In the new approach, H-MDS maps proximity data directly into the H-2 This removes the restriction to "quasi-hierarchical", graph-based data-a major limitation of (ii). Since a suitable distance function can convert all kinds of data to proximity (or distance-based) data, this type of data can be considered the most general. We review important properties of the hyperbolic space and, in particular, the circular Poincare model of the H-2. It enables effective human-computer interaction: by mouse dragging the "focus", the user can navigate in the data without loosing the context. In H-2 the "fish-eye" behavior originates not simply by a non-linear view transformation but rather by extraordinary, non-Euclidean properties of the H-2. Especially, the exponential growth of length and area of the underlying space makes the H-2 a prime target for mapping hierarchical and (now also) high-dimensional data. Several high-dimensional mapping examples including synthetic and real-world data are presented. Since high-dimensional data produce "ring"-shaped displays, we present methods to enhance the display by modulating the dissimilarity contrast. Measurement, analysis, and visualization of plant growth is of primary interest to plant biologists. We are developing software tools to support such investigation. There are two parts in this investigation, namely, growth visualization of (i) a plant root and (ii) a plant stem. For both domains, the input data is a stream of images taken by cameras. The tools being developed make it possible to measure various time-varying quantities such as differential growth. For both domains, the plant is modeled by using flexible templates to represent nonrigid motions.

Our research integrates modeling, high performance computing, database management, visualization, and collaborative environments for hazard mitigation of landslides and debris flows at volcanoes. Our project has three main thrusts: (1) developing realistic simulations of landslides and other flows at volcanoes;(2) integrating data from several sources, including simulation results, remote sensing data, and GIS data, and (3) extracting, organizing and presenting information in a range of formats and fidelity, including audio, visual, and text, to a geographically distributed set of scientists and decision-makers involved in risk management. The basis of our simulation codes is a new data management scheme that facilitates storage of and access to massive data sets, as well as data obtained from simulations. Our simulation permits local mesh refinement, and thus includes support for locally refined analysis in areas of special interest. The organization of GIS data for the simulations is also facilitated by this structure. Because visualization is crucial for risk analysis of volcano hazards, data meta-structures of familiar features are extracted for detailed, off-line analysis. This visualization environment permits interactive navigation and manipulation of view, and includes a spectrum of visual details ranging from individual buildings to entire mountainside scenes. Users at geographically remote locations can interact, view simulation results, and discuss possible safety options in a distributed fashion on the web.

Prompt diagnosis of abnormally shaped waveforms in ECG signal is an important component in the early diagnosis of cardiac arrhythmias, improving the quality of life of patients. Meanwhile, detection models for Premature Ventricular Contractions (PVC) are widely investigated, a less studied problem is data analysis and visualization. In this paper, we propose an approach for PVC detection and data visualization by exploiting the intrinsic geometry of the high-dimensional data using manifold learning and Support Vector Machines (SVM). ISOMAP forms a neighborhood-preserving projection which allows to uncover the low-dimensional manifold and is used here as a pre-processing step. Then by incorporating training labels the method is capable of recognizing PVC patterns with comparable accuracy of kernel learning machines.

Seismic data can now be interpreted in great detail. Interpreters employ highly sophisticated systems that facilitate visualisation and interaction with 3D datasets. In contrast processors do not routinely analyse seismic data using the same tools as the interpreter. This is an unhealthy state of affairs - processors may be unaware of features in the data that are significant in terms of exploration or development;interpreters may identify problems in datasets that were invisible to processors. 3D visualisation and interpretation technology offers the opportunity to make a step change to key tasks performed in seismic data processing, for example first-break picking and velocity analysis. Potentially processors could benefit from the same orders of magnitude increase in productivity and attention to detail as interpreters have enjoyed over the last two decades. In this paper, we discuss possible applications of virtual reality technologies, such as immersive projection technology (IPT), in the field of genome science, and propose cluster-oriented visualization that attaches importance to data separation of large gene data sets with multiple variables. Based on these strategies, we developed the cluster overlap distribution map (CDCM), which is a visualization methodology using IPT for pairwise comparison between cluster sets generated from different gene expression data sets. This methodology effectively provides the user with indications of gene clusters that are worth a close examination. In addition, by using the plate window manager system, which enables the user to manipulate existing 2D GUI applications in the virtual 3D space, we developed the virtual environment for the comprehensive analysis from providing the indications to further examination by referring to the database on Web sites. Our system was applied in the comparison between the gene expression data sets of hepatocellular carcinomas and hepato-blastomas, and the effectiveness of the system was confirmed.

Distributed, on-demand, data-intensive, and collaborative simulation analysis tools are being developed by an international team to solve real problems such as bioinformatics applications. The project consists of three distinct focuses: compute, visualize, and collaborate. Each component utilizes software and hardware that performs across the International Grid. Computers in North America, Asia, and Europe are working on a common simulation programs. The results are visualized in a multi-way 3D visualization collaboration session where additional compute requests can be submitted in real-time. Navigation controls and data replication issues are addressed and solved with a scalable solution. Published by Elsevier B.V.
