This paper describes the visual analysis tool WebQuilt, a web usability logging and visualization system that helps web design teams record and analyze usability tests. The logging portion of WebQuilt unobtrusively gathers clickstream data as users complete specified tasks. This data is then aggregated and presented as an interactive graph, where nodes of the graph are images of the web pages visited, and arrows are the transitions between pages. To aid analysis of the gathered usability test data, the WebQuilt visualization provides filtering capabilities and semantic zooming, allowing the designer to understand the test results at the gestalt view of the entire graph, and then drill down to sub-paths and single pages. The visualization highlights important usability issues, such as pages where users spent a lot of time, pages where users get off track during the task, navigation patterns, and exit pages, all within the context of a specific task. WebQuilt is designed to conduct remote usability testing on a variety of Internet-enabled devices and provide a way to identify potential usability problems when the tester cannot be present to observe and record user actions. © 2009 ACM.

Virtual endoscopy is a promising medical application for volume-rendering techniques where perspective projection is mandatory. Most of the acceleration techniques for direct volume rendering use parallel projection. This paper presents an algorithm to approximate perspective volume rendering using parallel projected slabs. The introduced error due to the approximation is investigated. An analytical study of the maximum and average error is made. This method is applied to VolumePro 500. Based on the error analysis, the basic algorithm is improved. This improvement increases the frame rate, keeping the global maximum error bounded. The usability of the algorithm is shown through the virtual endoscopic investigation of various types of medical data sets. Copyright (C) 2002 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

As traditional methods for multidimensional data visualization as Sammon's mapping or PCA did not provide us with the expectable results, we have started to exploit artificial neural net-based methods in our applications. Therefore Kohonen's SOM have been exhaustively used. It combines besides clustering also the projection operations. Several facts influence the success of SOM used for cluster analysis application. As the contribution shows, we have found that there are two antagonistic phases in SOM learning, namely cluster forming and fine weight tuning ones. As both are simultaneous and not easy understandable for the user, a new SOM interpretation method compatible with the original SOM-PAK was developed in the Dept of Computer Science and Engineering of Czech Technical University in Prague.

Co-word analysis is a bibliometric technique used to create atlas of science and related issues. Based on the cooccurrence frequency of pairs of words or phrases, co-word analysis is used to discover linkages among subjects in a research field and thus to trace the development of science. The aim of this study is to visualization the subject structure of the field of international management science during the period of 2002-2006. Co-word analysis was employed to reveal patterns and trends in the international management science field by measuring the association strengths of terms representative of relevant publications. data were collected from selected 52 kinds of international journal papers collected from Social Science Citation Index (SSCI). In addition to the keywords added by SSCI databases. Observe the co-word try to distinguish its dynamic development and evolution, and with the help of discipline knowledge to explain these information, mine the knowledge mode of its research field. The results show that the international management science field has some established research themes and it also changes rapidly to embrace new themes. © 2011 IEEE.

The scope of this paper is to introduce new analysis and visualization methods for WCDMA cellular networks. The proposed examples are mainly based on the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) method, but also other neural and statistical methods are equally applicable. The main motivation for advanced methods is to increase the abstraction level from the raw network measurements, i.e. radio access network language, to network functional areas or a language closer to the business of network operator. Furthermore, the vast amount of Quality of Service (QoS) and service combinations 3G will enable, require effective data handling procedures.

An important missing component in today's METOC (Meteorology and Oceanography) community is not the data itself, but a transparent layer or processes between data collection and data application;that is, the processes to easily register (create metadata), search, access and visualize or apply the data. A data registration mechanism is needed to allow a user to register their datasets to a metadata repository. Registration should allow the user to readily create a metadata record defining the data with reference to temporal and spatial domain, parameters, format, availability, etc. A metadata repository will facilitate the availability of data globally via some search mechanism. A data search/access mechanism is needed to find the data required by a user for the purpose of research and application. Finally, data visualization should also be automated, interactive and efficient. Our effort to fill this void with a quality assessment tool is called the data analysis and Model Assessment Portal (DA_MAP).

Through a state funded grant initiative, the Department of Art at the University of Idaho has recently founded an information visualization studio. We specialize in interdisciplinary research on developing visualization techniques that allow a transformation of complex data into visual formats while providing clarity and exposing underlying structures. Clear and concise visualization of information makes this understanding more immediate. It also allows for added critical thinking about a subject. For example, in the area of hardware and software design, existing visualizations of structures are often clouded by an engineer's previous knowledge about the subject. They know what they are looking at, but a machine doesn't, nor does an end user. Clear graphics developed by an information designer make it easier to see problems and give parameters that a programmer can then apply to building a better system. We seek to produce visualization systems, methodologies, and examples for the resolution of problems where visual demonstration of concepts and materials enhances, even permits, understanding. We intend to summarize the findings of our project by illustrating and demonstrating techniques, which we have developed, for manipulating raw data into clear graphic presentations of complex systems for decision making. We will also summarize our findings on methods for creating visualizations designed to assist individuals with perceptual or cognitive difficulties.

This paper discusses scientific visualization as a program development tool and as a tool for understanding the sediment dynamics of the marine bottom boundary layer (MBBL). Understanding the MBBL is important for predicting the optical characteristics of the coastal ocean, which are dependent on an accurate prescription of the suspended sediment concentration (SSC). Traditional methods of analyzing the MBBL include profiles, cross-sections, map views along equal water depths, and time series, which must be examined manually by the scientist. More complex data visualization is available using products like X-Vision, which allow data probing in 2D, plotting isosurfaces, overlaying variables onto other variable projections, and interactive data analysis using traditional 1D and 2D plots. Cthru Generation 2 (CG2) is representative of the next-generation of interactive immersive data visualization systems. CG2 smoothly transitions between the large scale necessary to understand the marine environment and the detailed view necessary to analyze the MBBL. CG2 also incorporates visual data probing as well as traditional methods like numerical tables. Communicating with non-scientists is further assisted by visualization techniques that utilize simulators like the Generic Lidar Model, which simulates the performance of laser-based imaging systems in the ocean using predicted SSC distributions. © 2002 American Society of Civil Engineers.

There are strong engineering motivations for wanting to place the design of fuel slingers and the understanding of their performance on an improved technical foundation. To date, however, there have been no studies conducted at a fundamental level of the basic physical processes involved in fuel slinger operation, or of the design and performance rules that are implied by these. We present results from visualization experiments of liquid atomization in a variety of fuel slinger geometries over a range of operating conditions. These visualizations then lead to a fundamental technical analysis that develops broadly applicable design and performance rules for round-hole fuel slingers in small gas turbines. The results from this analysis provide excellent correlation of experimental data by Morishita (1981) on the atomization performance of gas turbine slingers for various combinations of slinger diameters, number of holes, hole sizes, liquid flow rates, and slinger rotation rates. The results provide a basis for understanding the performance of existing fuel slingers, for guiding the design of improved fuel slingers, and for pointing to potentially dramatic new improvements in fuel slinger technology for small gas turbines. © 2002 by the author(s). This paper describes performance visualization with its purposes, significance, and our prototype system. Performance visualization provides us with a new user interface for music systems, a non-subjective explanation and judgment for musical expression, and a visual aid to understand, analyze, and compare performances and their musical structures. It will also introduce a more challenging research on designing a musical data mining interface not by tags nor by contents but by the mood. Other challenges include finding qualitative characteristics of music with analysis methods for information visualization and synesthesia between visualized and sonified information. We will describe which information should be shown on the visualized figures for expressive performance. Then we will show our prototype system to visualize expressive performance consisting of several instruments.
