A high resolution Doppler model of the walking human was developed for analyzing the continuous wave (CW) radar gait signature. data for twenty subjects were collected simultaneously using an infrared motion capture system along with a two channel 10.525 GHz CW radar. The motion capture system recorded three-dimensional coordinates of infrared markers placed on the body. These body marker coordinates were used as inputs to create the theoretical Doppler output using a model constructed in MATLAB. The outputs of the model are the simulated Doppler signals due to each of the major limbs and the thorax. An estimated radar cross section for each part of the body was assigned using the Lund & Browder chart of estimated body surface area. The resultant Doppler model was then compared with the actual recorded Doppler gait signature in the frequency domain using the spectrogram. Comparison of the two sets of data has revealed several identifiable bionrechanical features in the radar gait signature due to leg and body motion. The result of the research shows that a wealth of information can be unlocked from the radar gait signature, which may be useful in security and biometric applications.

The purpose of this study was the development of a method for fast and efficient analysis of dynamic MR images of the female breast. The image data sets were acquired with a saturation-recovery turbo-FLASH sequence facilitating the detection of the kinetics of the contrast agent concentration in the whole breast with a high temporal and spatial resolution. In addition, a morphological 3D-FLASH data set was acquired. The dynamic image data sets were analyzed by tracer kinetic modeling in order to describe the physiological processes underlying the contrast enhancement in mathematical terms and thus to enable the estimation of functional tissue specific parameters, reflecting the status of microcirculation. In order to display morphological and functional tissue information simultaneously, we developed a multidimensional visualization system, which enables a practical and intuitive human-computer interface in virtual reality. The quality of real-time volume visualization (using 3D-texture mapping) mainly depends on two factors: number and spatial resolution of the sampling slices. Furthermore, to allow the representation of both the MR signal and the relevant set of model parameters, an adaptation of these quantities to the size of the texture element might be necessary. Detection and localization of multiple breast lesions may be an important application.

Correlation analysis has always been a key technique for understanding data. However, traditional methods are only applicable on the whole data set, providing only global information on correlations. Correlations usually have a local nature and two variables can be directly and inversely correlated at different points in the same data set. This situation arises typically in nonlinear processes. In this paper we propose a method to visualize the distribution of local correlations along the whole data set using dimension reduction mappings. The ideas are illustrated through an artificial data example. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Clustering is a technique commonly used in scientific research. The task of clustering inevitably involves human participation - The clustering is not finished when the computer/algorithm finishes but the user has evaluated, understood and accepted the patterns. This defines a human involved "clustering-analysis/evaluation" iteration. Instead of neglecting this human involvement, we provide a visual framework (VISTA) with all power of algorithmic approaches (since their result can be visualized), and in addition we allow the user to steer/monitor/refine the clustering process with domain knowledge. The visual-rendering result also provides a precise pattern for fast post-processing.

One of the problems facing software re-engineering projects is the fact that program source code is invariably stored in ASCII plain text format. This format doesn't reflect the underlying structure of the program. Consequently software re-engineering or code migration tools need to, unearth this structure. This paper explores the possibility of adopting XML format to represent program structure for software systems, and describes a tool, the XMLizer, which has been implemented to support the transformation of software programs from ASCII plain text format to XML. In addition, the XMLizer allows variable-depth marking up of program structure by using a multi-weight parsing technique. The XMLizer currently supports three languages, Java, PL/IX and Pascal, and can be extended to support others. The performance of the XMLizer in converting PL/IX programs into XML was tested. XMLized output is accessible through an abundance of existing XML tools that can support both analysis and visualization tasks.

This paper presents the method of simulating the simultaneous equations which are over/under-constrained by the learner's misconception (partial constraint analysis: PCA). It can deal with arbitrary linear differential and/or algebraic equations with erroneous parts which preserve linearity. The procedure is as follows: (1) to generate the network which describes the constraints among the variables in equations (causal relation network: cn), (2) to abstract the subgraphs in which variables can be calculated (executed) independently of the rest (partial causal chains: pc), (3) to enumerate the combinations of pces which can be executed simultaneously and (4) to execute the selected combination by supplying the driving data exogenously for simulating the bahavior of the erronrous system. An example of application to a simple electric circuit is also presented.

We introduce a novel projection-based visualization method for high-dimensional data sets by combining concepts from MDS and the geometry of the hyperbolic spaces. This approach hyperbolic multi-dimensional scaling (H-MDS) is a synthesis of two important concepts for explorative data analysis and visualization: (i) multi-dimensional scaling uses proximity or pair distance data to generate a low-dimensional, spatial presentation of the data;(ii) previous work on the "hyperbolic tree browser" demonstrated the extraordinary advantages for an interactive display of graph-like data in the two-dimensional hyperbolic space (H-2). In the new approach, H-MDS maps proximity data directly into the H-2 This removes the restriction to "quasi-hierarchical", graph-based data-a major limitation of (ii). Since a suitable distance function can convert all kinds of data to proximity (or distance-based) data, this type of data can be considered the most general. We review important properties of the hyperbolic space and, in particular, the circular Poincare model of the H-2. It enables effective human-computer interaction: by mouse dragging the "focus", the user can navigate in the data without loosing the context. In H-2 the "fish-eye" behavior originates not simply by a non-linear view transformation but rather by extraordinary, non-Euclidean properties of the H-2. Especially, the exponential growth of length and area of the underlying space makes the H-2 a prime target for mapping hierarchical and (now also) high-dimensional data. Several high-dimensional mapping examples including synthetic and real-world data are presented. Since high-dimensional data produce "ring"-shaped displays, we present methods to enhance the display by modulating the dissimilarity contrast. Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is technique for visualization of the blood vessels in the human body. And it is necessary to obtain an image without a contrast medium as a mask image. In the conventional method, this mask image is commonly selected arbitrarily from a series of angiograms, and thus DSA images are sometimes degraded by the mask image, and the mask image that is used for subtracting a background structure is very important to keep the quality of DSA images. The aim of this study is to extract an optimum mask image from a series of acquired raw data. To make this mask image, we used the principal component analysis and we adopted the first component image as this mask image. The results obtained by this method showed the effectiveness of the proposed method. Furthermore, we have also succeeded in visualizing each blood vessel component image.

Processing of data in many data analysis applications can be represented as an acyclic, coarse grain data flow, from data sources to the client. This paper is concerned with scheduling of multiple data analysis operations, each of which is represented as a pipelined chain of processing on data. We define the scheduling problem for effectively placing components onto Grid resources, and propose two scheduling algorithms. Experimental results are presented using a visualization application. © 2002 IEEE.

The project consists of three distinct focuses: compute, visualize, and collaborate. Each component utilizes software and hardware that performs across the International Grid. Computers in North America, Asia, and Europe are working on a common simulation programs. The results are visualized in a multi-way 3D visualization collaboration session where additional compute requests can be submitted in real-time. Navigation controls and data replication issues are addressed and solved with a scalable solution. Published by Elsevier B.V.
