Formal Concept analysis is an unsupervised learning technique for conceptual clustering. We introduce the notion of iceberg concept lattices and show their use in Knowledge Discovery in databases (KDD). Iceberg lattices are designed for analyzing very large databases. In particular they serve as a condensed representation of frequent patterns as known from association rule mining. In order to show the interplay between Formal Concept analysis and association rule mining, we discuss the algorithm Titanic. We show that iceberg concept lattices are a starting point for computing condensed sets of association rules without loss of information, and are a visualization method for the resulting rules. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Geographic data elements are an essential part of any intelligence information system. visualization of this data on map displays is indispensable in supporting data analysis for mission objectives. No matter what the application domain, (DoD/State Government/e-commerce) the display of information on a geographic map is no longer a "nice-to-have" feature;it's now a mandatory one. The need for data visualization with map graphics has created an abundant supply of mapping products. The capabilities of these products range from advanced Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to basic products for map graphics presentation. The Core Mapping Application Programming Interface, CMAPI, provides a standardized interface to commercial and government off-the-shelf map engines. Using CMAPI allows application developers and their customers to avoid being locked into a specific vendor. As a result, sites where applications are deployed can avoid having to license multiple products that perform the same function. CMAPI is designed and implemented using software component technology for "plug and play" map engine compatibility. CMAPI front-end software components are easy to integrate with web-based thin-client and multi-platform thick client applications. CMAPI back-end components provide implementation of core mapping functionality using any one of several off-the-shelf map engines. In addition, CMAPI provides an XML import and export capability that allows applications to share map data while using different map engines.

Recent advances in information technology have made it possible to solve increasingly complex problems, and also to collect and store huge amounts of information. These vast quantities of data further have to be transformed into relevant value-added and "decision-quality" knowledge. It is against this background that the KDD (Knowledge Discovery in databases), a multidisciplinary field using computer learning, artificial intelligence, statistics, database technology, expert systems, and data visualization, appeared in the early 90's. In order to assess these technologies in the medical field, we have tested some of these techniques on a large database at our disposal, named DiabCare stemming from the WHO - DiabCare program for the application of the Saint-Vincent Declaration. It contains evaluation data on the health care of patients with diabetes, and in particular, its complications. So far, data analysis has been done using classical statistical methods, and we now intend to make use of such data-mining tools as Associations Rules and Decision and Classification Trees for further exploration of this database. The results presented here show that data mining techniques can be used successfully to extract knowledge from medical databases. The results obtained using Association Rules and especially Decision Trees are very promising.

Automatic evaluation of text generation tasks (e.g. machine translation, text summarization, image captioning and video description) usually relies heavily on task-specific metrics, such as BLEU (Papineni et al., 2002) and ROUGE (Lin, 2004). They, however, are abstract numbers and are not perfectly aligned with human assessment. This suggests inspecting detailed examples as a complement to identify system error patterns. In this paper, we present VizSeq, a visual analysis toolkit for instance-level and corpus-level system evaluation on a wide variety of text generation tasks. It supports multimodal sources and multiple text references, providing visualization in Jupyter notebook or a web app interface. It can be used locally or deployed onto public servers for centralized data hosting and benchmarking. It covers most common n-gram based metrics accelerated with multiprocessing, and also provides latest embedding-based metrics such as BERTScore (Zhang et al., 2019).

This paper reports results front a project that combined the visualisation of streetscapes with environmental economics. The particular economic methodology employed was choice experimentation, which has previously, tended to use text to convey, scenarios between which respondents make choices. The research investigated how the visual impact of streetscapes could be incorporated in choice experiments through the use of 3-dimensional computer generated visualisations. data was gathered initially, through an Internet based survey, and replicated later using a high specification stand-alone machine. This paper identifies strengths and weaknesses in the approach, and reports results pertaining to effectiveness and practicality of the methodology Using visualisation offers many potential benefits to the field of choice experimentation, arid application within the built environment merits further development.

Artificial neural network models are typically useful in pattern recognition and extraction of important features in large data sets. These models are implemented in a wide variety of contexts and with diverse type of input-output data. The underlying mathematics of supervised training of neural networks is ultimately tied to the ability to approximate the nonlinearities that are inherent in network's generalization ability. The quality and availability of sufficient data points for training and validation play a key role in the generalization ability of the network. A potential domain of applications of neural networks is in analysis of subjective data, such as in consumer science, affective neuroscience and perception of chemical senses. In applications of ANN to subjective data, it is common to rely on knowledge of the science and context for data acquisition, for instance, as a priori probabilities in the Bayesian framework. In this paper, we discuss the circumstances that create challenges for success of neural network models for subjective data analysis, such as sparseness of data and cost of acquisition of additional samples. In particular, in the case of affect and perception of chemical senses, we suggest that inherent ambiguity of subjective responses could be offset by a combination of human-machine expert. We propose a method of pre- and post-processing for blind analysis of data that that relies on heuristics from human performance in interpretation of data. In particular, we offer an information-theoretic smoothing (ITS) algorithm that optimizes that geometric visualization of multi-dimensional data and improves human interpretation of the input-output view of neural network implementations. The pre- and post-processing algorithms and ITS are unsupervised. Finally, we discuss the details of an example of blind data analysis from actual taste-smell subjective data, and demonstrate the usefulness of PCA in reduction of dimensionality, as well as ITS.

Genome study requires information pertaining to every gene in a chromosome. Visualizing information of how a gene is related to other genes in the same chromosome or to genes in other chromosomes will make the understanding of the relations more clear. Available genome visualization tools provide mainly the view of the overall genome [Websites 2,3,4] and some tools have features like zooming into a particular chromosome and viewing the gene in detail[Kozik02]. In this paper we present a new capability of 'Genome Vectorizer' formerly known as 'Genome Pixelizer SVG-fied', where a gene can be dragged out of a chromosome for more detailed analysis. This feature is an extension to 'Genome Pixelizer SVG-fied' which is a genome visualization tool that has been developed by Elena Kochetkova [Kochetkova09]. 'Genome Vectorizer' is a re-designed version of GenomePixelizer, written in 2002 in TCL/TK, a tool that allows for the detection of duplication events in genomes. It capitalizes on the benefits of using XML, XSLT, and SVG technologies combined with JavaScript scripting "to provide users with simpler interface maximized interactivity;as well as, improved efficiency of genetic data analysis"[Kochetkova09]. The gene dragging capability will provide users with much more interactivity, since often the users focus on a particular gene rather than the entire chromosome. Once the common genes are matched between chromosomes the user can drag the gene of interest out along with all the details pertaining to it.

Effectiveness and clarity of software objects, their adherence to coding standards and programming habits of programmers are important features of overall quality of software systems. This paper proposes an approach towards a quantitative software quality assessment with respect to extensibility, reusability, clarity and efficiency. It exploits techniques of Computational Intelligence (CI) that are treated as a consortium of granular computing, neural networks and evolutionary techniques. In particular, we take advantage of self-organizing maps to gain a better insight into the data, and study genetic decision trees - a novel algorithmic framework to carry out classification of software objects with respect to their quality. Genetic classifiers serve as a "quality filter" for software objects. Using these classifiers, a system manager can predict quality of software objects and identify low quality objects for review and possible revision. The approach is applied to an object-oriented visualization-based software system for biomedical data analysis.

Change representation concerns how changes of text are presented in writing tools. Change representation in collaborative writing can play an important role for the collaborators' understanding of changes of text. We have conducted a laboratory study where 10 pairs of a writer and a reviewer produced argumentative letters by using the change representation functions. We have also set different conditions in the experimental task: (a) two ways of representing changes, indication and display, and (b) two collaboration models, the writer- and the reviewer-initiative models. A primary source of the data was obtained though interviews with the participants. The paper reports their experience of collaboration in writing with change representation tools, relevant design conclusions, and lessons learned from the study. © 2002 IEEE.

A collaborative virtual environment system is described that is designed to support location-independent shared analysis of spatial data and urban planning proposals. The system seeks to extend the physical workplace of participants into the virtual environment, while preserving traditional textual and verbal communication and cooperation mechanisms. The systems aim is to improve productivity, quality and achieve more transparency in the planning process. The architecture of the Collaborative Urban Planner or CUP system is described and some experimental results that demonstrate urban development control tasks performed within this environment are presented. An application scenario offers a vision of future urban planning practice using CUP. The scenario also diagrammatically demonstrates virtual settings and scenes that could become everyday meeting places for remote planners, architects or engineers assessing proposals and discussing possible alterations to designs.
