The scope of this paper is to introduce new analysis and visualization methods for WCDMA cellular networks. The proposed examples are mainly based on the Self-Organizing Map (SOM) method, but also other neural and statistical methods are equally applicable. The main motivation for advanced methods is to increase the abstraction level from the raw network measurements, i.e. radio access network language, to network functional areas or a language closer to the business of network operator. As traditional methods for multidimensional datavisualization as Sammon's mapping or PCA did not provide us with the expectable results, we have started to exploit artificial neural net-based methods in our applications. Therefore Kohonen's SOM have been exhaustively used. It combines besides clustering also the projection operations. Several facts influence the success of SOM used for cluster analysis application. As the contribution shows, we have found that there are two antagonistic phases in SOM learning, namely cluster forming and fine weight tuning ones. As both are simultaneous and not easy understandable for the user, a new SOM interpretation method compatible with the original SOM-PAK was developed in the Dept of Computer Science and Engineering of Czech Technical University in Prague.

This paper describes performance visualization with its purposes, significance, and our prototype system. Performance visualization provides us with a new user interface for music systems, a non-subjective explanation and judgment for musical expression, and a visual aid to understand, analyze, and compare performances and their musical structures. It will also introduce a more challenging research on designing a musical data mining interface not by tags nor by contents but by the mood. Other challenges include finding qualitative characteristics of music with analysis methods for information visualization and synesthesia between visualized and sonified information. We will describe which information should be shown on the visualized figures for expressive performance. Then we will show our prototype system to visualize expressive performance consisting of several instruments.

An important missing component in today's METOC (Meteorology and Oceanography) community is not the data itself, but a transparent layer or processes between data collection and data application;that is, the processes to easily register (create metadata), search, access and visualize or apply the data. A data registration mechanism is needed to allow a user to register their datasets to a metadata repository. Registration should allow the user to readily create a metadata record defining the data with reference to temporal and spatial domain, parameters, format, availability, etc. A metadata repository will facilitate the availability of data globally via some search mechanism. A data search/access mechanism is needed to find the data required by a user for the purpose of research and application. Finally, datavisualization should also be automated, interactive and efficient. Our effort to fill this void with a quality assessment tool is called the dataanalysis and Model Assessment Portal (DA_MAP).

Through a state funded grant initiative, the Department of Art at the University of Idaho has recently founded an information visualization studio. We specialize in interdisciplinary research on developing visualization techniques that allow a transformation of complex data into visual formats while providing clarity and exposing underlying structures. Clear and concise visualization of information makes this understanding more immediate. It also allows for added critical thinking about a subject. For example, in the area of hardware and software design, existing visualizations of structures are often clouded by an engineer's previous knowledge about the subject. They know what they are looking at, but a machine doesn't, nor does an end user. Clear graphics developed by an information designer make it easier to see problems and give parameters that a programmer can then apply to building a better system. We seek to produce visualization systems, methodologies, and examples for the resolution of problems where visual demonstration of concepts and materials enhances, even permits, understanding. We intend to summarize the findings of our project by illustrating and demonstrating techniques, which we have developed, for manipulating raw data into clear graphic presentations of complex systems for decision making. We will also summarize our findings on methods for creating visualizations designed to assist individuals with perceptual or cognitive difficulties.
