We describe OSIRIS, a three-dimensional, relativistic, massively parallel, object oriented particle-in-cell code for modeling plasma based accelerators. Developed in. Fortran 90, the code runs on multiple platforms (Cray T3E, IBM SP, Mac clusters) and can be easily ported to new ones. Details on the code's capabilities are given. We discuss the object-oriented design of the code, the encapsulation of system dependent code and the parallelization of the algorithms involved. We also discuss the implementation of communications as a boundary condition problem and other key characteristics of the code, such as the moving window, open-space and thermal bath boundaries, arbitrary domain decomposition, 2D (cartesian and cylindric) and 3D simulation modes, electron sub-cycling, energy conservation and particle and field diagnostics. Finally results from three-dimensional simulations of particle and laser wakefield accelerators are presented, in connection with the data analysis and visualization infrastructure developed to post-process the scalar and vector results from PIC simulations.

In support of the AFOSR program in Information Fusion, the CNS Technology Laboratory at Boston University is developing and applying neural models of image and signal processing, pattern learning and recognition, associative learning dynamics, and 3D visualization, to the domain of Information Fusion for Image analysis in a geospatial context. Our research is focused by a challenge problem involving the emergence of a crisis in an urban environment, brought on by a terrorist attack or other man-made or natural disaster. We aim to develop methods aiding preparation and monitoring of the battlespace, deriving context from multiple sources of imagery (high-resolution visible and low-resolution hyperspectral) and signals (GMTI from moving vehicles, and ELINT from emitters). This context will serve as a foundation, in conjunction with existing knowledge nets, for exploring neural methods in higher level information fusion supporting situation assessment and creation of a common operating picture (COP). © 2002 Int. visualization and analysis of pulsed thermographic data for NDT has generally been based on simple image averaging, subtraction or slope operations. Quantitative contrast methods, based on comparison to a defect free reference point or region, have also been used to a lesser extent. Despite their widespread use, all of these methods are highly susceptible to noise, nonlinearity of the IR camera response, and the presence of surface features on the sample. More importantly, the ability of any of these methods to significantly improve the ability to retrieve deep or weak subsurface features beyond the original unmodified image is limited. In a previous paper, we introduced the concept of Thermographic Signal Reconstruction (TSR) as a means of enhancing defect to background contrast while reducing the amount of data that must be stored by an order of magnitude. The TSR method increases the depth range over which pulsed thermography can be applied, and also reduces the amount of blurring due to lateral diffusion that is typical of thermographic imaging. In this paper we compare TSR with conventional thermographic approaches and consider the mechanisms for the resulting performance improvements.

Image guided neurosurgery systems rely on rigid registration of the brain to preoperative images, not taking into account the displacement of brain tissue during surgery. Co-registered ultrasound appears to be a promising means of detecting tissue shift in the operating room. Although the use of ultrasound images alone may be insufficient for adequately describing intraoperative brain deformation, they could be used in conjunction with a computational model to predict full volume deformation. We rigorously test the assumption that co-registered ultrasound is an accurate source of sparse displacement data. Our co-registered ultrasound system is studied in both clinical applications as well as in a series of porcine experiments. Qualitative analysis of patient data indicates that ultrasound correctly depicts displaced tissue. The porcine studies demonstrate that features from co-registered ultrasound and CT or MR images are properly aligned to within approximately 1.7 mm. Tissue tracking in pigs suggests that the magnitude of displaced tissue may be more accurately predicted than the actual location of features. We conclude that co-registered ultrasound is capable of detecting brain tissue shift, and that incorporating displacement data into computational model appears feasible.

An integrated Ingress-of-Coolant Event (ICE) test facility was constructed to demonstrate that the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) safety design approach and design parameters for the ICE are adequate. Major objectives of the integrated ICE test facility are to estimate the performance of an integrated pressure suppression system and obtain the validation data for safety analysis codes for fusion reactors. The integrated ICE test facility simulates the current ITER components with a scaling factor of 1/600. The modified Transient Reactor analysis Code (TRAC) is used to verify the integrated ICE test results and clarify quantitatively the two-phase flow behavior in ITER during the ICE. From the results of the present study the effectiveness of the ITER pressure suppression system was verified experimentally, and then, water-vapor flow configurations in ITER at the ICE were visualized numerically by the three-dimensional computations using the modified TRAC.

The NASA/IPAC Extragalactic database (NED, http://***..edu/) currently contains over 4.5 million photometric measurements covering the electromagnetic spectrum from gamma rays through radio wavelengths for objects that are being cross-correlated among major sky surveys (e.g., 2MASS, SDSS, IRAS, NVSS, FIRST) and thousands of smaller, but unique and important, catalogs and journal articles. The ability to retrieve photometric data (including uncertainties, aperture information, and references) and display spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for individual objects has been available in NED for six years. In this paper we summarize recent enhancements that enable construction of large panchromatic data sets to facilitate multidimensional photometric analysis. The database can now be queried for samples of objects that meet flux constraints at any wavelength (e.g., objects with any available 20cm flux, or objects with f(nu)[10mum] > 5.0 Jy). The ability to utilize criteria involving flux ratios (e.g., objects with f(nu)[20cm]/f(nu)[60mum] > 0.5) is under development. Such queries can be jointly combined with additional constraints on sky area, redshifts, object types, or sample membership, and the data are output with consistent physical units required for comparative analysis. Some results derived from fused photometric data in NED are presented to highlight the large number and diversity of available SEDs.

Technical analysis of financial markets describes many patterns of market behavior. For practical use, all these descriptions need to be adjusted for each particular trading session. In this paper, we develop a "data Mining Tool for Technical analysis of the Futures Markets" (DMT-TAFM), which dynamically generates rules based on the notion of the price pattern similarity. The tool consists of three main components. The first component provides visualization of data series on a chart with different ranges, scales, and chart sizes and types. The second component constructs pattern descriptions using sets of polynomials. The third component specifies the training set for mining, defines the "similarity" notion, and searches for a set of similar patterns. DMT-TAFM is useful to prepare the data, and then reveal and systemize statistical information about "similar" patterns found in any type of historical price series. We performed experiments with our tool on three decades of trading data for hundred types of futures. Our results for this data set shows that, we can prove or disprove many "well-known" patterns based on real data, as well as reveal new ones, and use the set of relatively consistent patterns found during data mining for developing better futures trading strategies.

In light of the significant research activities in digital library, digital government, and e-commerce over the past decade, there seems to be common threads among them and unique challenges and opportunities ahead. For digital library, we are beginning to tally its research impacts and contemplate future directions. For digital government, information technologies could offer tremendous opportunities, but will they happen fast enough? We hope by discussing the many unique problems and challenges facing these fast evolving and somewhat related research disciplines, we could share lessons learned and develop insights for advancing our knowledge and achieving successful organizational transformation. A detailed case study of a research project (COPLINK) jointly funded by the NSF Digital Library and Digital Government Programs in the area of crime data mining will be presented in detail. We discuss how advanced visual crime mining techniques such as association rule mining, social network analysis, deception detection, temporal-spatial visualization, and agents could become the catalyst for assisting intelligence and law enforcement agencies in capturing knowledge and creating transformation.

This paper discusses some of the major results from the initial effort of the Predictive Failures and Advanced Diagnostics (PFAD) for Legacy Aircraft program. The primary goals of this AF Research Laboratory / Northrop Grumman project are to enable a prognostics capability for legacy avionics systems and to enhance their existing diagnostic performance. Major benefits of this program are enhanced aircraft availability and reduced Operation and Support (O&S) costs. Current maintenance practices and associated shortfalls are presented as an introduction to the PFAD efforts, in conjunction with the analysis of historic data by manual and data mining methods. The paper concludes with an initial HAD system design overview.
