The paper presents how to find the variables that best illustrate a problem of interest when visualizing with the self-organizing map (SOM). The user defines what is interesting by labeling data points, e.g. with alphabets. These labels assign the data points into clusters. An optimization algorithm looks for the set of variables that best separates the clusters. These variables reflect the knowledge the user applied when labeling the data points. The paper measures the separability, not in the variable space, but on a SOM trained into this space. The found variables contain interesting information, and are well suited for the SOM. The trained SOM can comprehensively visualize the problem of interest, which supports discussion and learning from data. The approach is illustrated using the case of the Hitura mine; and compared with a standard statistical visualization algorithm, the Fisher discriminant analysis.

The project DEMETER (DEMonstration of Earth observation TEchnologies in Routine irrigation advisory services) was designed to assess and demonstrate improvements introduced by Earth observation (EO) and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in farm and Irrigation Advisory Service (IAS) day-to-day operations. The DEMETER concept of near-real-time delivery of EO-based irrigation scheduling information to IAS and farmers has proven to be valid. The operationality of the space segment was demonstrated in three different pilot zones in South Europe during the 2005 irrigation campaigns. Extra-fast image delivery and quality controlled operational processing make the EO-based crop coefficient maps available at the same speed and quality as ground-based data (point samples), while significantly extending the spatial coverage and reducing service cost. The new online Space-Assisted Irrigation Advisory Service (e-SAIAS) is the central outcome of the project. Its key feature is the operational generation of irrigation scheduling information products from a virtual constellation of high-resolution EO satellites and their delivery to farmers in near-real-time using leading-edge on-line analysis and visualization tools. First feedback of users at IAS and farmer level is encouraging. The paper gives an overview of the project and its main achievements.

We describe an interactive way to generate a set of clusters for a given data set. The clustering is done by constructing local histograms, which can then be used to visualize, select, and fine-tune potential cluster candidates. The accompanying algorithm can also generate clusters automatically, allowing for an automatic or semi-automatic clustering process where the user only occasionally interacts with the algorithm. We illustrate the ability to automatically identify and visualize clusters using NCI's AIDS Antiviral Screen data set.

The north Texas Barnett shale illustrates successful commercialization of an unconventional reservoir. However, it took 17 years to evolve from pumping crosslinked gel (XLG) carrying more than 1 million pounds of proppant per job to slick water fracs (SWF) consisting of large volumes of water and small quantities of sand. This transition to SWF stimulation opened the door for widespread development that has advanced the Newark East (Barnett shale) to the largest producing gas field in the state of Texas. This paper investigates Barnett completion strategy during the time period from 1993-2002. The 393-well dataset includes completion, reservoir, and production data Unique data visualization tools were used to investigate various completion parameters and their effect on production.1 This unbiased look at a large block of data challenges some of the preconceived opinions about Barnett shale, including: The Barnett shale is a continuous/homogeneous formation yielding commercial production in all instances. XLG fracture stimulation is damaging to the Barnett, and SWF always outperform XLG fracs. High rates and large volumes of fluid and proppant always give higher production. Reservoir quality is unimportant or has a negligible effect on production outcome. The effect of changes in stimulation variables on production is readily *** found that production results show a broad scattering when crossplotted with various completion and reservoir inputs. This result is not uncommon when analyzing field data. The large number of variables and scatter within the data required the use of data clustering techniques to extract useful information. Advanced data mining techniques were used, including self-organizing maps (SOM) to reduce the statistical noise and highlight completion and reservoir parameters directly affecting production. Dynamic program visualization, i.e. the visualization of the runtime behavior of a program as opposed to the static structure of its source code has been investigated for various kinds of programs, usually on a fairly low level. The focus has been on control flow in procedural programs or on the communication between objects in object-oriented programs. In this paper we explore the usefulness of dynamic program visualization for component programs. We discuss how to visualize component-programs and motivate the need for a proper visualization of the communication among these components. We present a three dimensional visualization and show the integration into the HOTAGENT component development environment.

Summary form only given. data storage issues pose a potential problem in the performance and analysis of turbulence simulations. One tool that has successfully addressed such performance problems in other domains is data compression. Unfortunately, data from turbulence simulations does not usefully compress with lossless methods. In this work, the compression of data from a simulation of barotropic turbulence using wavelet-based lossy coding is examined. The resolution of the data used is 512 by 512. The output of this simulation is the relative vorticity as single precision floating point values. A number of quantities are computed from the relative vorticity. The numerical error in these quantities is evaluated along with visualizations of the vorticity and error correlation with the uncompressed data. It is found that depending on the quantities of interest and the evaluation criteria, compression ratios of 4:1 to 256:1 are achievable. Under a conservative definition of acceptable error, it is possible to recover quantities of interest from data compressed 4:1 (8 bpp), the data rate that in existing practice is used for visualization.

This paper describes the visualization of global solar radiation data for teaching and research. ERA-40 data (1957-2002) [7,8] from the ECMWF model [6] was processed into annual and monthly averages over 45 years. A collaborative and iterative design methodology, including perceptually validated color progression was used. The data was visualized via Python's matplotlib (basemap) module. The scope of this paper is to introduce new analysis and visualization methods for WCDMA cellular networks. The proposed examples are mainly based on the self-organizing map (SOM) method, but also other neural and statistical methods are equally applicable. The main motivation for advanced methods is to increase the abstraction level from the raw network measurements, i.e. radio access network language, to network functional areas or a language closer to the business of network operator. Furthermore the vast amount of quality of service (QoS) and service combinations, that 3G will enable, require effective data handling procedures.

The purpose of this work is to build a computerized system for the delineation of upper airway structures via MRI and to evaluate its effectiveness for routine clinical use in aiding diagnosis of upper airway disorders in children. We use two MRI protocols, axial T1 and T2, to gather information about different aspects of the airway and its surrounding soft tissue structures including adenoid, tonsils, tongue and soft palate. These images are processed and segmented to compute the architectural parameters of the airway such as its surface description, volume, central (medial) line, and cross-sectional areas at planes orthogonal to the central line. We have built a software package based on 3DVIEWNIX and running on a 450 MHz Pentium PC under Linux system (and on a Sun workstation under Unix) for the various operations of visualization, segmentation, registration, prefiltering, interpolation, standardization, and quantitative analysis of the airway. The system has been tested utilizing 40 patient studies. For every study, the system segmented and displayed a smooth 3D rendition of the airway, its central line and a plot of the cross-sectional area of the airway orthogonal to the central line as a function of the distance from one end of the central line. The tests indicate 97% precision and accuracy for segmentation. The mean time taken per study is about 4 minutes for the airway. This includes operator interaction time and processing time. This method provides a robust and fast means of assessing the airway size, shape, and places of restriction, as well as providing a structural data set suitable for use in modeling studies of airflow and mechanics.
