In this paper we present a method for interactive analysis of non-segmented medical volume data. We discuss both, different rendering methods for visualization, and different possibilities for interaction in relation to segmentation results. Furthermore, the adaptive region growing approach is applied to both, segmentation of a structure of interest, as well as generation of transfer function for volume rendering of the same structure. The adaptive region growing method is based on the statistical evaluation of 3D-neighbourhood. The method is used for determination of a homogeneity criterion for the structure of interest. Subsequently this criterion is used for segmenting of data and for generating of an initial transfer function for volume rendering. We utilize this for displaying a hybrid 3D-visualization of the segmented structure and the specific gray-value interval of original data. Based on this rendering we discuss possibilities for user-guided validation of segmentation results, based on the variation of several rendering parameters.

As more and more information is available on the Internet, search engines and bookmark tools become very popular. However, most search tools are based on character-level matching without any semantic analysis. and users have to manually organize their bookmarks or favorite collections without any convenient tool to help them identify the subjects of the Web pages. In this paper, we introduce an interactive tool that automatically analyzes, categorizes, and visualizes the semantic relationships of web pages in personal bookmark or favorites collections based on their semantic similarity. Sophisticated dataanalysis methods are applied to retrieve and analyze the full text of the Web pages. The Web pages are clustered hierarchically based on their semantic similarities. A utility measure is recursively applied to determine the best partitions that are visualized by what we call the Semantic Treemap. Various interaction methods such as scrolling, zooming, expanding, selecting, searching, filtering etc. are provided to facilitate viewing and querying for information. Furthermore, the hierarchical organization as well as the semantic similarities among Web pages can be exported and visualized in a collaborative 3D environment, allowing a group of people to compare and share each other's bookmarks.

Dynamic program visualization, i.e. the visualization of the runtime behavior of a program as opposed to the static structure of its source code has been investigated for various kinds of programs, usually on a fairly low level. The focus has been on control flow in procedural programs or on the communication between objects in object-oriented programs. In this paper we explore the usefulness of dynamic program visualization for component programs. We discuss how to visualize component-programs and motivate the need for a proper visualization of the communication among these components. We present a three dimensional visualization and show the integration into the HOTAGENT component development environment.

The previous methods to compute smooth molecular surface assumed that each atom in a molecule has a fixed position without thermal motion or uncertainty. In real world, the position of an atom in a molecule is fuzzy because of its uncertainty in protein structure determination and thermal energy of the atom. In this paper, we propose a method to compute smooth molecular surface for fuzzy atoms. The Gaussian distribution is used for modeling the fuzziness of each atom, and a p-probability sphere is computed for each atom with a certain confidence level. The smooth molecular surface with fuzzy atoms is computed efficiently from extended-radius p-probability spheres. We have implemented a program for visualizing three-dimensional molecular structures including the smooth molecular surface with fuzzy atoms using multi-layered transparent surfaces, where the surface of each layer has a different confidence level and the transparency associated with the confidence level.

The U.S. Geological Survey is developing a directional borehole radar (DBOR) tool for mapping fractures, lithologic changes, and underground utility and void detection. An important part of the development of the DBOR tool is dataanalysis and visualization, with the aim of making the software graphical user interface (GUI) intuitive and easy to use. The DBOR software system consists of a suite of signal and image processing routines written in Research Systems' Interactive data Language (IDL). The software also serves as a front-end to many widely accepted Colorado School of Mines Center for Wave Phenomena (CWP) Seismic UNIX (SU) algorithms (Cohen and Stockwell, 2001). Although the SU collection runs natively in a UNIX environment, our system seamlessly emulates a UNIX session within a widely used PC operating system (MicroSoft Windows) using GNU tools (Noer, 1998). Examples are presented of laboratory data acquired with the prototype tool from two different experimental settings. The first experiment imaged plastic pipes in a macro-scale sand tank. The second experiment monitored the progress of an invasion front resulting from oil injection. Finally, challenges to further development and planned future work are discussed.

We present a general framework for interactive visualization and analysis of multi-dimensional data points. The proposed model is a hierarchical extension of the latent trait family of models developed in [4] as a generalization of GTM to noise models from the exponential family of distributions. As some members of the exponential family of distributions are suitable for modeling discrete observations, we give a brief example of using our methodology in interactive visualization and semantic discovery in a corpus of text-based documents. We also derive formulas for computing local magnification factors of latent trait projection manifolds.

Specview is a spectral visualization tool designed to provide easy simultaneous display and analysis of multiple 1-D spectrograms of the same astronomical source taken with different instruments. It is a standalone Java application that features, aside its main plotting capabilities, a spectral model fitting engine. This article describes its main features and some aspects of its internal design. The software can be downloaded from http://***.

In order to evaluate the performance of Multi-Input Multi-Output (MIMO) communication systems accurately, MIMO channel sounding is necessary. In this paper, a Dynamic Integrated platform for multi-dimeNsiOnal dataanalysis (DINO) is proposed for the systematic analysis of the data from a MIMO channel sounder. In DINO, through the visualization of the obtained data by recreating the propagation channel virtually in a computer, a fundamental link between the measured data and the physical environment is established.

We present a semi-automatic technique for segmenting a large cryo-sliced human brain data set that contains 753 high-resolution RGB color images. This human brain data set presents a number of unique challenges to segmentation and visualization due to its size (over 7 GB) as well as the fact that each image not only shows the current slice of the brain but also unsliced "deeper layers" of the brain. These challenges are not present in traditional MRI and CT data sets. We have found that segmenting this data set can be made easier by using the YIQ color model and morphology. We have used a hardware-assisted interactive volume renderer to evaluate our segmentation results.

In this paper, we present two new approaches for the analysis of web site users behaviors. The first one is a synthetic visualization of Log file data and the second one is a coding of sequence based data. This coding allows us to carry out a vector quantization, and thus to find meaningful prototypes of the data set. For this, first the set of sessions is partitioned and then a prototype is extracted from each of the resulting classes. This analytic process allows us to categorize the different web site users behaviors interested by a set of categories of pages in a commercial site.
