System administration has become an increasingly important function, with the fundamental task being the inspection of computer log-files. It is not, however, easy to perform such tasks for two reasons. One is the high recognition load of log contents due to the massive amount of textual data. It is a tedious, time-consuming and often error-prone task to read through them. The other problem is the difficulty in extracting unusual messages from the log. If an administrator does not have the knowledge or experience, he or she cannot readily recognize unusual log messages. To help address these issues, we have developed a highly interactive visual log browser called "MieLog." MieLog uses two techniques for manual log inspection tasks: information visualization and statistical analysis. Information visualization is helpful in reducing the recognition load because it provides an alternative method of interpreting textual information without reading. Statistical analysis enables the extraction of unusual log messages without domain specific knowledge. We will give three examples that illustrate the ability of the MieLog system to isolate unusual messages more easily than before.

With the completion of the human genome sequence, and with the proliferation of genome-related annotation data, the need for scalable and more intuitive means for analysis becomes critical. At Variagenics and Small Design Firm, we have addressed this problem with a coherent three-dimensional space in which all data can be seen in a single context. This tool aids in integrating information at vastly divergent scales while maintaining accurate spatial and size relationships. Our visualization was successful in communicating to project teams with diverse backgrounds the magnitude and biological implication of genetic variation.

Communication of regional geographic information to the population as a whole should be a municipal priority, but sadly it is not. From traffic patterns to weather information to emergency information to proposed highways, a city or county has, in electronic form, all of this useful information and more. With the ubiquity of web browsers and the arrival of online 3D graphics technologies such as VRML and Java 3D, this information could and should be made available. By using Java and Java3D, the rendering power of an OpenGL-type application can be combined with multithreading, allowing a program to invisibly access data sets from Internet sites with dedicated threads while processing user interaction with another. Any type of relevant data can be transformed into a three-dimensional interpretation and mapped over the terrain that the user is analyzing. This prototype is designed to be extremely extensible and expandable in order to accommodate future revisions and/or portability. This paper discusses the issues surrounding the creation of such a model, alone, with challenges, problems, and solutions.

As the Rayleigh number Ra is increased the thermal field develops increasingly thin plume-like structures along which heat is convected. These eventually break down and become turbulent. visualization methods are used to distinguish between various models of heat conductivity and to develop an intuitive understanding of the structure of the flow.

Currently, within the scope of the research programs carried out at the Institute for Roentgen Optics, several automated set-ups have been created and are now used to perform X-ray scanning experiments. We present a fast method for computing Simulated Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) image scans (including tip artifacts). The basic insight is that the array of depth values in the depth buffer of a graphics system is analogous to the height field making up an AFM image, and thus the ability of graphics hardware to compute the depth of many pixels in parallel can be used to radically speed up the AFM imaging simulation. We also present a method for reconstructing better approximations to the true shape from AFM images distorted by tip artifacts. These algorithms are implemented using operations from 3D grayscale mathematical morphology operations of dilation and erosion.

In this paper, we discuss possible applications of virtual reality technologies, such as immersive projection technology (IPT), in the field of genome science, and propose cluster-oriented visualization that attaches importance to data separation of large gene data sets with multiple variables. Based on these strategies, we developed the cluster overlap distribution map (CDCM), which is a visualization methodology using IPT for pairwise comparison between cluster sets generated from different gene expression data sets. This methodology effectively provides the user with indications of gene clusters that are worth a close examination. In addition, by using the plate window manager system, which enables the user to manipulate existing 2D GUI applications in the virtual 3D space, we developed the virtual environment for the comprehensive analysis from providing the indications to further examination by referring to the database on Web sites. Our system was applied in the comparison between the gene expression data sets of hepatocellular carcinomas and hepato-blastomas, and the effectiveness of the system was confirmed.

It is very important to understand the thermo-fluid characteristics of supercritical fluid, for the development of advanced supercritical water cooled nuclear reactor. In this study, visualization experiment for forced convection of the supercritical fluid was carried. Using the measured images with cross-correlation technique, the velocity distribution was obtained. To reduce the error of the reconstructed data, novel approach for the image analysis and advanced visualization technique was applied. For the visualization technique, the frame straddling was applied with infrared pulse laser. The temporal and spatial noise removal procedure was developed for the image analysis.

One of the well known relational bibliometric methods is the co-word analysis. The co-occurrence of words can be illustrated in a matrix. By the means of various mathematical methods like cluster analysis and others the matrix can be illustrated in a two-dimensional science-map that represents a well structured rendition of information. The key question of this paper is how can different objects e.g. key-words and authors or institutions be linked by co-word analysis. In bibliographic documents key-words, authors and institutions are elements of each document. Thus we can talk of a direct linkage between these objects according to the joint occur in one document. The properties of one author to appear with certain keywords in certain articles allows a linkage over the documents. Indirect linkage can be found if documents, raised from the connection between authors and key-words, are eliminated in the functional relationship and new networks are generated which show an indirect linkage of authors on the basis of keywords. This paper will show a method how different networks can be linked directly and indirectly by using co-word analysis. The combination of content maps by co-word analysis will be shown using a technology monitoring concerning fuel cells.
