One of the first questions we pose when we have a new data set to explore is: are there any obvious groupings in the data? These clusters reveal the structure of the data set and make the data easier to understand. Cluster analysis is a classic problem and there are many tools for it. The problem is that these methods often give conflicting and too fine-grained results for practical use. As well, they are accompanied with the danger of over-interpreting the data. Another drawback in these techniques is that they do not usually provide an opportunity for interactive exploration. We propose a simple user interface and method to interactively explore clusters in data sets. The method is based on a rapid dynamic query and it can detect both hierarchical and partitional clusters.

This paper proposes a new dataanalysis tool called Time-tunnel. Time-tunnel visualizes any numbers of time-series numerical data as individual charts in a 3D virtual space. Through direct manipulations on a computer screen, the user easily puts more than two different charts overlapped together to compare them in order to recognize the similarity or the difference among those data. Simultaneously a radar chart among those data at any time point is displayed to recognize the similarity and the correlation among them. In this way, using Time-tunnel, the user can visually analyse multiple time-series numerical data through interactive manipulations on a computer screen. Time-tunnel has not only aspects as a dataanalysis tool but also aspects as a chart-based multimedia presentation tool because Time-tunnel also treats multimedia data, i.e., texts, images, sounds and movies, as additional information represented by tags located at any point of charts. In this paper, the authors also describe the usefulness of Time-tunnel as a multimedia presentation tool.
The matching pursuit (or MP) algorithm decomposes audio data into a collection of thousands of constituent sound particles or gaborets. These particles correspond to the "quantum" or granular model of sound ...

Simulations and experiments in the fusion community generate very large data sets at remote sites. Downloading it to local sites is very time consuming. visualization and analysis of these data sets is then difficult, as the data comes in different formats. In addition, dataanalysis and visualization tools vary from site to site. These problems are addressed by a grid service under development at Tech-X. This service will connect heterogeneous data sets coming from simulations and experiments, bring data into well-established analysis tools and provide means to switch between data-transfer protocols, data formats and dataanalysis tools, thus providing mechanism for data and tools unification and comparison. In this paper we present the motivation, architecture, status of this application and first results of our performance tests comparing different data transfer mechanisms. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. The field of Information visualization is concerned with improving how users perceive, understand, and interact with visual representations of abstract information. Immersive Virtual Environments (VEs) excel at a greater comprehension of spatial information. This project addresses the intersection of these two fields known as Information-Rich Virtual Environments (IRVEs) where perceptually realistic information, such as models and scenes, are enhanced with abstract information, such as text, numeric data, hyperlinks, or multimedia resources. IRVEs present a number of important design challenges including the management, coordination, and display of interrelated perceptual and abstract information. We describe a set of design issues for this type of integrated visualization and demonstrate a coordinated, multiple-views approach to support 2D and 3D visualization interactions such as overview, navigation, details-on-demand, and brushing-and-linking. In the CAVE, spatial information in a VE is interactively linked to embedded visualizations of related abstract information. Software architecture issues are discussed with details of our implementation applied to the domain of chemical information visualization. Lastly, we subject our system to an informal usability evaluation and identify usability issues with interaction and navigation that guides future work in these environments.

The appearance of the sky has a fundamental effect on the way human beings perceive an environment. This paper presents a method to compute synthetic high-dynamic-range fisheye images from weather parameter , (e. g. Radiance) to define the lighting data sets. These images can then be used in global-illumination systems conditions at an arbitrary weather state. Applications of this technology can be found in for example flight simulators and in architectural visualization. The method combines artificial neural networks and principal component analysis to associate the appearance of the sky with the state of a weather parameter vector. A model is trained with examples of sky images and weather data from a period of seven months. This model is then used to generate artificial sky images corresponding to a specific weather parameter vector. This is a novel method which contrary to many previous methods is able to synthesize a sky image which varies with the current weather state. The results show that, although it is not possible to represent the cloud details, it is possible to distinguish between different weather states.

The SPIN! data mining system has a component-based architecture, where each component encapsulates some specific functionality such as a data source, an analysis algorithm or visualization. Individual components can be visually linked within one workspace for solving different data mining tasks. The SPIN! friendly user interface and flexible underlying component architecture provide a powerful integrated environment for executing main tasks constituting a typical data mining cycle: data preparation, analysis, and visualization.

EGOMiner, stands for Enhanced Gene Ontology mining system, is a CORBA based tool developed for genomic and proteomic dataanalysis. One key function of EGOMiner is to provide biological data interpretation based on Gene Ontology with quantitative and statistical analysis and visualization by direct acyclic graph. Cross comparison of multiple experimental studies is supported. The other function is quality analysis of microarray chip images. The input is raw chip data and output is visualization of the data quality of the chip image. This is system significantly improves the GoMiner system that was designed and developed by the authors.
