Visual inspection of the tongue has been an important diagnostic method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Clinic data have shown significant connections between various viscera cancers and abnormalities in the tongue and the tongue coating. Visual inspection of the tongue is simple and inexpensive, but the current practice in TCM is mainly experience-based and the quality of the visual inspection varies between individuals. The computerized inspection method provides quantitative models to evaluate color. texture and surface features on the tongue. In this paper, we investigate visualization techniques and processes to allow interactive dataanalysis with the aim to mer-e computerized measurements with human expert's diagnostic variables based on five-scale diagnostic conditions: Healthy (H), History Cancers (HC), History of Polyps (HP), Polyps (P) and Colon Cancer (C).

Research fronts are the forefront of a scientific field Timely identifying emerging trends and abrupt changes in scientific literature is not only beneficial for users of digital libraries, but also instrumental for users to trace the movement of a research front. A research front can be seen as a dynamic and transient mapping from the state of the art to its immediate prior art - the intellectual base. Citation and co-citation analysis primarily focuses on the structure and dynamics of the intellectual base, information retrieval and related research mainly focuses on intrinsic properties of text documents. In this article, we describe a novel approach that enables us to detect and visualize the transient relationship over time. Temporal associations between content words connected to a surge of interest in scientific papers and high-impact articles in the intellectual base are identified and visualized as a time-variant network. We apply the approach to the detection of thematic changes over time in information visualization and research in terrorism.

Vorticity is the quantity used to describe the creation, transformation and extinction of vortices. It is present not only in vortices but also in shear flow. Especially in ducted flows, most of the overall vorticity is usually contained in the boundary layer. When a vortex develops from the boundary layer, this can be described by transport of vorticity. For a better understanding of a flow it is therefore of interest to examine vorticity in all of its different roles. The goal of this application study was not primarily the visualization of vortices but of vorticity distribution and its role in vortex phenomena. The underlying industry at case is a design optimization for a Pelton turbine. An important industrial objective is to improve the quality of the water jets driving the runner. Jet quality is affected mostly by vortices originating in the distributor ring. For a better understanding of this interrelation, it is crucial to not only visualize these vortices but also to analyze the mechanisms of their creation. We used various techniques for the visualization of vorticity, including field lines and modified isosurfaces. For field line based visualization, we extended the image-guided streamline placement algorithm of Turk and Banks to data-guided field line placement on three-dimensional unstructured grids.

This paper summarizes the progress achieved through the build of a scientific datavisualization web service;a client-server system that is designed to acquire visualization requests from users connected to a web browser, perform the visualization process and provide them with the visualization results. Interacting with the visualization results is another issue that has to be taken into account. Providing results using VRML gives the opportunity to navigate the visualization and makes the visualization as an analysis tool rather than just a tool for the presentation of results. The different trade offs and optimization parameters associated with the VRML output are discussed through the presentation of an optimized framework aiming to provide interactive, fast, portable and easy to use services. The framework is tested against different visualization techniques to ensure its adaptability to each of them. An average reduction factor of 87.63323 % is achieved to the final VRML resultant file and an average speed up percentage of 9.2793 % is achieved to the execution time of the visualization process.

In this paper we apply data Mining and Information visualization techniques to the web domain in order to benefit from the power of both human visual perception and computing;we term this Visual Web Mining. In response to the two challenges, we propose a generic framework, where we apply data Mining techniques to large web data sets and use Information visualization methods on the results. A key Scientific Web Intelligence goal is to produce visualizations of academic Web spaces in order to reveal subject structures and identify relationships between different fields. We introduce an exploratory technique, Vocabulary Spectral analysis, designed to build intuition to help design effective procedures for clustering. We apply VSA to New Zealand university web sites. In application areas like customer relationship management (CRM) or business intelligence (BI), for example, structured customer or company data is often associated to text-based information like telemarketing transcripts or trade press articles. Supporting the analysis of such text information and related structured data is a major challenge for current CRM and BI tools. In this paper we present a system for visually analyzing these particular information spaces based on a multiple views paradigm. The system brings together views on text similarity, text categories, and associated relational attributes;visual overlay techniques help to keep track of navigation and selection operations in complementary views. The paper sketches an application example and summarizes results from an initial usability evaluation.

The weather phenomena has been received attention from the ancient days and the data sets obtained from real-world measurements have been accumulating and being used for weather forecast as well as for understanding the weather phenomena. Nowadays the weather experts have surmised the association between the low-pressure area behavior and the weather changing phenomena in a local area. On the other hand, the massive amount of weather observation and measurement data sets has already accumulated and it will probably continue eternity. Thus, the massive data sets are going to be multiplied in the early future. If only the weather experts can analyze those data sets, the analyzed data sets will not accompany this increase and almost all data sets will be stored without being analyzed. By these reason, to overcome this problem, we propose critical point-based method for weather analysis which facilitates the understanding of the weather phenomena. By using this method. even a non-expert could make a specific weather analysis and obtain required information from it. We developed an evaluation module by using visualization software called AVS/Express to analyze weather-shifting phenomena by using critical points (CP). We evaluated this module by using a weather data set and we could verify that the critical points facilitate the understanding of the weather phenomena being analyzed.

Simulation of engine dynamics is a well established field of work in the automotive industry. We have worked closely with one of the companies developing industry-leading software for dynamic simulation of cranktrains to improve the model creation in their product. We have extended the modeler with a 3D preview of the engine which enables users to view a more direct representation of the design, thereby improving the pace and efficiency of their work. The data sets resulting from the simulation are vast. Previously, analysis could only be performed using 2D charts only. As a result of our co-operation it is now possible to inspect the simulation results in an interactive 3D visualization envionment.
