Segmentation based on RFM (Recency, Frequency, and Monetary) has been used for over 50 years by direct marketers to target a Subset of their customers, save mailing costs, and improve profits. RFM analysis is commonly performed using the Arthur Hughes method, which bins each of the three RFM attributes independently into five equal frequency bins. The resulting 125 cells are depicted in a tabular format or as bar graphs and analyzed by marketers, who determine the best cells (customer segments) to target. We propose an interactive visualization of RFM that helps marketers visualize and quickly identify important customer segments. Additionally, we show an integrated filtering approach that allows marketers to interactively explore the RFM segments in relation to other customer attributes, such as behavioral or demographic, to identify interesting subsegments in the Customer base. We depict these RFM visualizations on two large real-world data sets and discuss how customers have used these visualizations in practice to glean interesting insights from their data. Given, the widespread use of RFM as a critical, and many times the only, segmentation tool, we believe that the proposed intuitive and interactive visualization will provide significant business value.

In this paper we present an approach using incrementally constructed neural gas networks to 'grow' an intuitive interface for interactive exploratory sonification of high-dimensional data. The sonifications portray information about the intrinsic data dimensionality and its variation within the data space. The interface follows the paradigm of model-based sonification and consists of a graph of nodes that can be acoustically 'excited' with simple mouse actions. The sound generation process is defined in terms of the node parameters and the graph topology, following a physically motivated model of energy flow through the graph structure. The resulting sonification model is tied to the given data set by constructing both graph topology and node parameters by an adaptive, fully data-driven learning process, using a growing neural gas network. We report several examples of applying this method to static data sets and point out a generalization to the task of process analysis.

While organizations have invested millions of dollars on their software systems and it is impossible to produce systems of any size that do not need to be changed, software evolution for requirement change is getting more and more important. So far, most of the efforts on software evolution have focused on system function change or system architecture transfer. The number of evolution for core data model adding is relative few. Software architecture is a good tool for software design and software analysis, but it has limitation on software evolution when there need some architecture inheriting for core data model adding. In this paper, we proposed method using an extended software architecture model to evolve exist software with additional data models. The method is applied to evolve a visualization software platform from plane data processing ability to a visualization platform with ability of processing both plane data and volume data.

visualization is a key issue for multivariate data analysis. Multivariate visualization is an active research topic and many efforts have been made in order to find suitable and meaningful visual representations. In this paper we present a technique for data projection in multivariate datasets, named Target data Projection (TDP). Through this technique a vector is created for each multivariate data item considering a subset of the available variables. A new scalar variable is generated projecting those vectors over a target vector that defines the direction of interest for visual analysis. End-users set up target vectors in order to explore particular relationships by means of application meaningful projections. Hence, it is possible to map a combination of multivariate data into one scalar variable for graphical representation and interaction. This technique has proved to be very flexible and useful in mine planning providing valuable information for decision making.

Diagnosis and treatment of heart function deficiencies is of paramount medical importance, as heart problems constitute an important cause of death. This diagnosis is based on analysis of data collected from images such as MRI scans. This paper presents a component of a Java based package that assesses the geometry of the left ventricle to determine its function. This component is used in the detection of the heart's left ventricular contours from a stack of MRI images. The implementation of this component is based on a variation of the active contour method, and provides a blend of interactivity and automated propagation in detecting the left ventricular contours of the images.

analysis of web site usage data involves two significant challenges: firstly the volume of data, arising from the growth of the web, and secondly, the structural complexity of web sites. In this paper we apply data Mining and Information visualization techniques to the web domain in order to benefit from the power of both human visual perception and computing;we term this Visual Web Mining. In response to the two challenges, we propose a generic framework, where we apply data Mining techniques to large web data sets and use Information visualization methods on the results. The goal is to correlate the outcomes of mining Web Usage Logs and the extracted Web Structure by visually superimposing the results. We design several new information visualization diagrams.

New high-throughput proteomic techniques generate data faster than biologists can analyze it. Hidden within this massive and complex data are answers to basic questions about how cells function. The data afford an opportunity to take a global or systems approach studying whole proteomes comprising all the proteins in an organism. However, the tremendous size and complexity of the high-throughput data make it difficult to process and interpret. Existing tools for studying a few, proteins at a time are not suitable for global analysis. visualization provides powerful analysis capabilities for enormous, complex data at multiple resolutions. We developed a novel interactive visualization tool, PQuad, for the visual analysis of proteins and peptides identified from high-throughput data on biological samples. PQuad depicts the peptides in the context of their source protein and DNA, thereby integrating proteomic and genomic information. A wrapped line metaphor is applied across key resolutions of the data, from a compressed view of an entire chromosome to the actual nucleotide sequence. PQuad provides a difference visualization for comparing peptides from samples prepared under different experimental conditions. We describe the requirements for such a visual analysis tool, the design decisions, and the novel aspects of PQuad.

Modern imaging and simulation techniques have enhanced system-level understanding of neural function. In this article, we present an application of interactive visualization to understanding neuronal dynamics causing locomotion of a single hip joint, based on pattern generator output of the spinal cord. Our earlier work visualized cell-level responses of multiple neuronal populations. However, the spatial relationships were abstract, making communication with colleagues difficult. We propose two approaches to overcome this: (1) building a 3D anatomical model of the spinal cord with neurons distributed inside, animated by the simulation and (2) adding limb movements predicted by neuronal activity. The new system was tested using a cat walking central pattern generator driving a pair of opposed spinal motoneuron pools. Output of opposing motoneuron pools was combined into a single metric, called Net Neural Drive, which generated angular limb movement in proportion to its magnitude. Net neural drive constitutes a new description of limb movement control. The combination of spatial and temporal information in the visualizations elegantly conveys the neural activity of the output elements (motoneurons), as well as the resulting movement. The new system encompasses five biological levels of organization from ion channels to observed behavior. The system is easily scalable, and provides an efficient interactive platform for rapid hypothesis testing.

Quantitative techniques for visualization are critical to the successful analysis of both acquired and simulated scientific data. Many visualization techniques rely on indirect mappings, such as transfer functions, to produce the final imagery. In many situations, it is preferable and more powerful to express these mappings as mathematical expressions, or queries, that can then be directly applied to the data. In this paper, we present a hardware-accelerated system that provides such capabilites and exploits current graphics hardware for portions of the computational tasks that would otherwise be executed on the CPU. In our approach, the direct programming of the graphics processor using a concise data parallel language, gives scientists the capability to efficiently explore and visualize data sets.

Satellite images are important sources of information for meteorologists to predict rapid weather changes, for example storms, now and in the near-future (Nowcasting). It is not possible to use traditional numerical weather forecasts for this purpose since these are computed with a time-lag of several hours. This means that the most recent weather changes are not taken into account. This paper presents a method to compute synthetic satellite images from computed forecasts to make it possible to view short-range forecasts in this representation. The cloud information in numerical forecast data sets is of much more interest if it can be visualized with a well-known representation like the satellite image. The proposed method uses artificial neural network technology to construct a model which is trained with data from numerical forecasts and classified satellite data captured at the same points in time. The cloud cover parameters in the forecast data set are tied to the cloud classification in the satellite image using a point-to-point representation. The results show that this is a useful method to compute synthetic satellite images. The level of detail in the resulting images is lower than in a real satellite image, but detailed enough to provide information about the principal features of the cloud cover.
