This paper addresses the problem of extrapolating extremely sparse three-dimensional set of digitized landmarks and bone surface points to obtain a complete surface representation. The extrapolation is done using a statistical principal component analysis (PCA) shape model similar to earlier approaches by Fleute et al.(1) This extrapolation procedure called Bone-Morphing is highly useful for intra-operative visualization of bone structures in image-free surgeries. We developed a novel morphing scheme operating directly in the PCA shape space incorporating the full set of possible variations including additional information such as patient height, weight and age. Shape information coded by digitized points is iteratively removed from the DCA model. The extrapolated surface is computed as the most probable surface in the shape space given the data. Interactivity is enhanced, as additional bone surface points can be incorporated in real-time. The expected accuracy can be visualized at any stage of the procedure. In a feasibility study, we applied the proposed scheme to the proximal femur structure. 14 CT scans were segmented and a sequence of correspondence establishing methods was employed to compute the optimal PCA model. Three anatomical landmarks, the femoral notch and the upper and the lower trochanter are digitized to register the model to the patient anatomy. Our experiments show that the overall shape information can be captured fairly accurately by a small number of control points. The added advantage is that it is fast, highly interactive and needs only a small number of points to be digitized intra-operatively.

In order to evaluate the feasibility of a device scoring classes of hemorrhagic shock, a multivariate analysis of physiological data collected on swine enduring continuous blood loss was conducted. Raw data sampled at up to 500 Hz were first preprocessed and used for features extraction over period of 1 min. An expert scored all these physiological features, into one of the four classes of hemorrhagic shock: none, compensated, uncompensated and irreversible. A supervised learning of various classifiers was then evaluated over these data. The percentage of misclassification obtained when using a realistic way of estimating error (a leave one -animal- out validation) is about 20% when Mean Arterial Pressure is used, and about 40% when only non invasive features are used. The results are about the same whatever the classifiers used. This evaluation is discussed and a visualization is proposed in order to assess the temporal supervision given by the classifiers.

Several information visualization techniques have been developed in the last years due to the need of representing and analyzing the huge amount of data generated by several applications or made available through the World Wide Web. These techniques are usually interactive and provided as part of a graphical user interface. Information visualization techniques are usually reported showing their use in experimental situations, employing some kind of analysis. Recently, studies have specifically addressed the evaluation of such techniques. This paper reports results from the definition and application of specific criteria for the evaluation of information visualization techniques. The criteria encompass the evaluation of both visual representations and interaction mechanisms, within the framework of usability testing methods.

In computer assisted surgery 3D models are now routinely used to plan and navigate a surgery. These models enhance the surgeon's capability to decrease the invasiveness of surgical procedures and increase their accuracy and safety. Models obtained from specifically acquired CT scans have the disadvantage that they induce high radiation dose to the patient. In this paper we propose a novel method to construct a patient-specific model that provides an appropriate intra-operative 3D visualization without the need for a pre or intra-operative imaging. The 3D model is reconstructed by fitting a statistical deformable model to minimal sparse 3D data consisting of digitized landmarks and surface points that are obtained intra-operatively. The statistical model is constructed using Principal Component analysis from training objects. Our morphing method then computes a Mahalanobis distance weighted least square fit of the model by solving a linear equation system. The refined morphing scheme has better convergence behaviour because of the additional parameter that relaxes the Mahalanobis distance term as additional points are incorporated. We present leave-one-out experiments with model generated from proximal femors and hippocampi.

Military deployment planners and analysts must consider the constraints, options, and available infrastructure of a network of installations and ports, from the beginning of the transportation system in the United States to the end of the deployment in the host country. Argonne National Laboratory developed a suite of models that simulate and visualize these deployments. There are discrete event simulations (the Enhanced Logistics Intra-theater Support Tool, the Transportation System Capability model, and the Port Simulation model) as well as several data editing and visualization tools. This paper presents the models, and discusses how they interact and leverage their shared data and technologies, to facilitate deployment analysis.

ImageSurfer is a tool designed to explore correlations between two 3D scalar fields. Out scientific goal was to determine where a protein is located, and how much its concentration varies along the membrane of a neuronal dendrite. The 3D scalar field data sets fall into two categories: dendritic plasma membranes (defining the structure) and immunofluorescent staining (defining protein concentration along the structure). ImageSurfer enables scientists to analyze relationships between multiple data sets obtained with confocal microscopy by providing 3D surface view, height field. and graphing tools. Each tool reduces the complexity of the problem by extracting a restricted subset of data: finding a region of interest in 3D. getting a sense of relative concentrations in 2D. and getting exact concentration values in 1D. The current design is presented, along with the rationale for each design decision. The tool is already proving useful for data exploration, analysis, and presentation.

This paper reviews some process signal analysis and representation methods that can be used during reactor operation such that they are suitable for real-time applicatons. All listed methods have been tested on data from operating plant. The objective is to detect and interpret changes in the plant or core status at an early stage, such that appropriate measures can be taken immediately. The methods that are discussed and demonstrated in the paper can be divided into two categories. The first is the use of fast and intelligent computing methods such as neural networks and fast wavelet transform, in combination with a diagnostic unfolding procedure which would be computationally rather demanding with traditional methods. The second type is based on direct representation of the system state through visualization of large complex data, showing the space time behavior of the system. This latter is not associated with any unfolding procedure, it uses only a moderate signal preprocessing for filtering out redundant information, but otherwise showing the process status directly. Such methods have been made possible with the development of powerful computer visualization techniques. The potentials represented by this second alternative do not seem to have been explored fully yet in reactor diagnostics. Methods corresponding to both categories will be demonstrated and discussed in the paper.

Support vector machines(SVMS), a powerful machine method developed from statistical learning and have made significant achievement in some field. Introduced in the early 90's, they led to an explosion of interest in machine learning. However, like most machine learning algorithms, they are generally applied using a selected training set classified in advance. With the repaid development of the internet and telecommunication, huge of information has been produced as digital data format, generally the data is unlabeled. It is impossible to classify the data with one's own hand one by one in many realistic problems, so that the research on unlabeled data classification has been grown. Improvements in databases technology, computing performance and artificial intelligence have contributed to the development of intelligent data analysis. In this paper, a SVMs classifier based on k-means algorithm is presented for the classification of unlabeled data.

The relocalization of plasma membrane proteins is critical for establishing cellular polarity and regulating cell signaling. Three-dimensional fluorescence video microscopy allows the dynamic visualization of proteins in living cells. We have developed a robust and automated method to employ fluorescence data acquired in this manner for quantitative analysis of membrane protein movements across the cell surface. Our method utilizes level-set-based surface reconstruction followed by a maximum likelihood surface registration algorithm for rigid-body alignment of noisy images. A surface-walking technique yields distance maps for the cell surface, which are then used to measure changes in protein surface distribution over time. Applying this method to signaling in T lymphocytes, we have used it to monitor receptor movements and have validated these results against previously reported single-particle tracking data. ©2004 IEEE.

Acoustic emission (AE) moment tensor analysis can give kinematics information that are locations, surface direction of micro-cracks and cracking motions directions of AE sources in material from stored data sets of AE waveforms. AE-SiGMA analysis is an efficient solution of AE moment tensor analysis for investigation of internal cracking and fracture mechanism. However, solutions by AE moment tensor analysis are expressing numerically. When these results were shown on the planes (2D visualization), users found difficulty sometimes in the interpretation of the cracking motions and orientations. Nowadays, information technologies and the Internet environment are growing up, and AE-SiGMA analysis has been improved to ease to use with the aid of the information technology solution. Representation of micro crack locations and directions by 3D visualization using Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) is a remarkable technique on this improvement. As the result, these results can be put on Web3D publishing and browsed by usual web browsers, Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer or Netscape(R) Navigator. In this paper, representations of cracking by the virtual reality modeling were attempted. In addition, this method provides the 3D cracking monitoring in case of bending test of reinforced concrete beam and model experiment of re-bar corrosion.
