data mining refers to extracting or "mining" knowledge from large amounts of data. It is an increasingly popular field that uses statistical, visualization, machine learning, and other data manipulation and knowledge extraction techniques aiming at gaining an insight into the relationships and patterns hidden in the data. Availability of digital data within picture archiving and communication systems raises a possibility of health care and research enhancement associated with manipulation, processing and handling of data by computers. That is the basis for computer-assisted radiology development. Further development of computer-assisted radiology is associated with the use of new intelligent capabilities such as multimedia support and data mining in order to discover the relevant knowledge for diagnosis. It is very useful if results of data mining can be communicated to humans in an understandable way. In this paper, we present our work on data mining in medical image archiving systems. We investigate the use of a very efficient data mining technique, decision tree, in order to learn the knowledge for computer-assisted image analysis. We apply our method to classification of x-ray images for lung cancer diagnosis. . The proposed technique is based on an inductive decision tree learning algorithm that has low complexity with high transparency and accuracy. The results show that the proposed algorithm is robust, accurate, fast, and it produces a comprehensible structure summarizing the knowledge it induces. © 2004 IEEE.

A new MDS algorithm for textual data analysis

MDS algorithms are data analysis techniques that have been successfully applied to generate a visual representation of multivariate object relationships considering only a similarity matrix. However in high dimensional spaces the concept of proximity become meaningless due to the data sparsity and the maps generated by common MDS algorithms fail often to reflect the object proximities. In this paper, we present a new MDS algorithm that overcomes this problem transforming the dissimilarity matrix in an appropriate manner. Besides a new dissimilarity is proposed that reflects better the local structure of the data. The connection between our model and a kernelized version of the Kruskal MDS algorithm is also studied. The new algorithm has been applied to the challenging problem of word relation visualization. Our model outperforms several alternatives proposed in the literature.

This research focuses on analysis and processing of high-resolution Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Chlorophyll-a (Ocean Color) observations from satellite data. Our objective is to detect and locate mesoscale oceanographic features, such as eddies, upwelling, jets, filaments and narrow frontal regions. Our approach is to identify these features by utilizing their dominant patterns and variability to characterize their spatial segmentation properties. Mesoscale phenomena, such as eddies, currents, fronts and upwelling regions in the Monterey Bay and in the Gulf of Mexico are studied here. An automatic ocean feature identification procedure is presented. Schemas like eddy structuring element construction and banded thresholding methodology are discussed. This approach is demonstrated on satellite derived images of SST and Ocean Color.

visualization techniques provide an outstanding role in KDD process for data analysis and mining. However, one image does not always convey successfully the inherent information from high dimensionality, very large databases. In this paper we introduce VSIS (Visual Set of Information Segments), an interactive tool to visually explore multidimensional, very large, numerical data. Within the supervised learning, our proposal approaches the problem of classification by searching of meaningful intervals belonging to the most relevant attributes. These intervals are displayed as multi–colored bars in which the degree of impurity with respect to the class membership can be easily perceived. Such bars can be re–explored interactively with new values of user–defined parameters. A case study of applying VSIS to some UCI repository data sets shows the usefulness of our tool in supporting the exploration of multidimensional and very large data. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

A person with an asymmetric morphology of maxillofacial skeleton reportedly possesses an asymmetric jaw function and the risk to express temporomandibular disorder is high. A comprehensive analysis from the point of view of both the morphology and the function such as maxillofacial or temporomandibular joint morphology, dental occlusion, and features of mandibular movement pathways is essential. In this study, the 4D jaw movement visualization system was developed to visually understand the characteristic jaw movement, 3D maxillofacial skeleton structure, and the alignment of the upper and lower teeth of a patient. For this purpose, the 3D reconstructed images of the cranial and mandibular bones, obtained by computed tomography, were measured using a non-contact 3D measuring device. and the obtained morphological images of teeth model were integrated and activated on the 6 DOF jaw movement data. This system was experimentally applied and visualized in a jaw deformity patient and its usability as a clinical diagnostic support system was verified.

Terrorism Information Awareness (TIA) was initiated by the Information Awareness Office (IAO) of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) (1,2,3). TIA capabilities enable the detection, classification, identification, and tracking of terrorist activities in order to provide early warning of plans and to identify options to prevent them from being executed. TIA operated as a research program in an environment with real data, real users, and real missions. This environment presented many challenges to the collection and analysis of metrics. Like most large things, the TIA Program was a mixture of the "complicated" and the "complex". At a high level, the program could be considered as both a "System" and a human "Network". The "System" is complicated, able to be analyzed from its constituent components. On the other hand, the "Network" is a complex composite of the activities of small groups engaged in problem solving. To analyze TIA experiments, we adopted multiple inter-woven sets of "perspectives" encompassing both the System and the Net. All perspectives were engaged Simultaneously. The first set of three, which defined the make up of the Metrics Team, were a cognitive perspective, an operational perspective, and a technical perspective. We also established five "threads" of functional capability to study the technologies: structured discovery, link and group understanding, decision-making with corporate memory, collaborative problem solving, and context-aware visualization. Finally, we established models of the operational context (mission, goals, and resources) for each of the collaboration groups, called "scenarios." The metrics for these analyses were derived using an explicit model based on a UML Metrics Meta-Model. Presenting aggregated analyses in a way that fosters understanding without losing the appreciation of the complexities of the program is itself a complex task. Recent developments in geographic information systems (GIS) and increasing availability of micro-data for cities present an environment that encourages innovations in approaches to visualizing and exploring outcomes of urban processes. We describe an object-oriented, GIS-based environment that facilitates visualization, exploration, and description of household level activity-travel behaviour. The activity pattern of a sample household from the 1994/1995 Portland Household Activity and Travel Behaviour Survey is used in the discussion to demonstrate the current capabilities of our system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

In many European countries air- and spaceborne remote sensing data is operationally used for oil spill monitoring. For the Baltic Sea the yearly results of the aerial surveillance are collected by the Helsinki Commission (HELCOM) and for the North Sea by the Bonn Agreement Secretariat. To improve knowledge of the oil spill situation in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea these data sets were analyzed and visualized. If a geographical phenomenon may be reasonably modeled as point data is largely a question of scale. Oil spills on a sea basin level (North Sea, Baltic Sea) can be considered as point data. During the analysis we are essentially looking for patterns in the data. However, to combine oil spill surveillance results from different countries the data must be standardized. For standardization purposes it is important to have information about the surveillance effort, which means for instance the number of pollution control flights per year and the area covered or the number of acquired and analyzed satellite. Special incidents (e.g. accidents) may lead to a multitude of oil spills in a certain period of time which has to be considered during the analysis. The data was visualized taking into account additional information and available information about the surveillance activities. Kernel estimation was used to calculate oil spill density estimation. First results are promising. The strongest impediment is the unavailability of information for data standardization.

The actual development of distributed information technologies and Java programming enables employing them also in the medical arena to support the retrieval, integration and evaluation of heterogeneous data and multimodal images in a web browser environment. With this aim, we used them to implement a client-server architecture based on software agents. The client side is a Java applet running in a web browser and providing a friendly medical user interface to browse and visualize different patient and medical test data, integrating them properly. The server side manages secure connections and queries to heterogeneous remote databases and file systems containing patient personal and clinical data. Based on the Java Advanced Imaging API, processing and analysis tools were developed to support the evaluation of remotely retrieved bioimages through the quantification of their features in different regions of interest. The Java platform-independence allows the centralized management of the implemented prototype and its deployment to each site where an intranet or internet connection is available. Giving healthcare providers effective support for comprehensively browsing, visualizing and evaluating medical images and records located in different remote repositories, the developed prototype can represent an important aid in providing more efficient diagnoses and medical treatments.

A hierarchy of cameras for 3D photography

The view-independent visualization of 3D scenes is most often based on rendering accurate 3D models or utilizes image-based rendering techniques. To compute the 3D structure of a scene from a moving vision sensor or to use image-based rendering approaches, we need to be able to estimate the motion of the sensor from the recorded image information with high accuracy, a problem that has been well-studied. In this work, we investigate the relationship between camera design and our ability to perform accurate 3D photography, by examining the influence of camera design on the estimation of the motion and structure of a scene from video data. By relating the differential structure of the time varying plenoptic function to different known and new camera designs, we can establish a hierarchy of cameras based upon the stability and complexity of the computations necessary to estimate structure and motion. At the low end of this hierarchy is the standard planar pinhole camera for which the structure from motion problem is non-linear and ill-posed. At the high end is a camera, which we call the full field of view polydioptric camera, for which the motion estimation problem can be solved independently of the depth of the scene which leads to fast and robust algorithms for 3D Photography. In between are multiple view cameras with a large field of view which we have built, as well as omni-directional sensors. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
