In this paper we present an occlusion culling method that uses hardware-based depth queries on oriented bounding boxes to cull unseen geometric primitives efficiently. An out-of-core design enables this method to interactively display data sets that are too large to fit into main memory. During a preprocessing phase, a spatial subdivision (such as an octree or BSP tree) of a given data set is constructed where, for each node, an oriented bounding box containing mesh primitives is computed using principal component analysis (PCA). At runtime, the tree indicated by the spatial subdivision is traversed in front-to-back order, and only nodes that are determined to be visible, based on a hardware accelerated depth query, are rendered.

Heart diseases cause considerable morbidity and the prognosis after heart failure is poor. An improved understanding of cardiac mechanics is necessary to advance the diagnosis and treatment of heart diseases. This paper presents techniques for visualizing and evaluating biomedical finite element models and demonstrates their application by using as an example models of a healthy and a diseased human left ventricle. The following contributions are made: we apply techniques traditionally used in solid mechanics and computational fluid dynamics to biomedical data and suggest some improvements and modifications. We introduce a novel algorithm for computing isosurfaces for scalar fields defined over curvilinear finite elements. We obtain new insight into the mechanics of the healthy and the diseased left ventricle and we facilitate the understanding of the complex deformation of the heart muscle by novel visualizations.

Range image segmentation has many applications in computer vision areas such as computer graphics and robotic vision. A generic methodology for 3D point set analysis in which planar structures play an important role is defined. It consists mainly of a specific K-means algorithm which is able to process different shapes in cluster. At the same time, within geometric and topologic considerations, a set of application-driven heuristics is designed. This helps to find out the right number of structures in point sets in order to give a good visualization and representation of a large scale environment without a priori models. Our aim is to propose a simple and generic frame for 3D scene understanding. Tests were realised on different types of environment data: natural and man-made. This research project has been realized with EADS (French Air Space Society). Keywords: Fuzzy clustering, 3D reconstruction and scene analysis, range image segmentation, environment modeling, stereovision.

The paper describes a comprehensive approach to first reconstruct and then visualize three-dimensional image models created from a pair of two-dimensional digital color images. The method integrates an interactive output data manipulation capability of JView, a Java based API (Application Programming Interface) engineered by US Air Force (AFRL/IFSB) with newly developed more accurate procedure of recreating texture mapped 3D-models using a stereo triangulation technique. Though several procedures have been proposed in literature on how to generate 3D models from 2D stereo pairs by recovering the image depth, they are limited in predicting an accurate pixel matching between image correspondences. Furthermore, the majority of papers lack depicting the reconstructed 3D-image geometry to show how well their adopted techniques have been able to recover the scene depth at every pixel. We have employed a region-based block matching methodology for color image analysis. The reconstructed 3D image models can be viewed and maneuvered on a computer screen by moving up and down, rotating around, and zooming in and out with the help of mouse buttons. This interactive viewing capability is an aid to the visualization process and facilitates algorithm designers to test step-by-step their codes and make appropriate judgments as to the accuracy of the underlining reconstruction techniques (sort of a visual debugger). Example presented shows detailed disparity map and reconstructed geometries.

The Visibility Information Exchange Web System (VIEWS) is an online system designed to acquire, manage, and provide access to data and metadata related to visibility and air quality, and to support the efforts of the five Regional Planning Organizations (RPOs) to meet the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency's Regional Haze Rule. The Rule calls for state and federal agencies to work together to improve visibility in 156 national parks and wilderness areas and requires states and other interested parties to develop and implement air quality protection plans to reduce the pollution that causes visibility impairment. The primary purpose of VIEWS is to aid the RPOs in the analysis and interpretation of air quality data to satisfy the Regional Haze regulations. The IMPROVE dataset has regulatory significance under the Regional Haze Rule, and VIEWS provides access to custom IMPROVE data products designed to assist states in compliance with the Rule. VIEWS makes these and a variety of supporting datasets available via a web-based interface that includes ad-hoc query and custom display tools. Supporting datasets include FRM, STN, CASTNet, and a variety of aerosol, optical and meteorological data. We itemize the datasets currently available in VIEWS and list those on the RPO's wish list for inclusion into the system. Examples of how the IMPROVE and supporting datasets can be used to better understand visibility reduction in protected areas are shown using VIEWS analysis tools. Available tools include descriptive charting capabilities, back trajectory analysis, and a GIS based metadata browser. We briefly describe the fully developed database behind VIEWS that is customized to provide web access to air quality data and facilitate the import and quality control of new datasets. Hands on demonstrations of VIEWS and instruction on data access and new data visualization tools will be available.

Hierarchical levels of details (HLODs) have proven to be an efficient way to visualize complex environments and models even in an out-of-core system. Large objects are partitioned into a spatial hierarchy and on each node a level of detail is generated for efficient view-dependent rendering. To ensure correct matching between adjacent nodes in the hierarchy care has to be taken to prevent cracks along the cuts. This either leads to severe simplification constraints at the cuts and thus to a significantly higher number of triangles or the need for a costly runtime stitching of these nodes. In this paper we present an out-of-core visualization algorithm that overcomes this problem by filling the cracks generated by the simplification algorithm with appropriately shaded fat borders. Furthermore, several minor yet important improvements of previous approaches are made. This way we come up with a simple nevertheless efficient view-dependent rendering technique which allows for the natural incorporation of state-of-the-art culling, simplification, compression and prefetching techniques.

In typical data mining applications we often have large amounts of data at our disposal along with knowledge often available in quite different ways such as rules, cases, analytical models or correlations among variables. Many classical machine learning methods may result inadequate in this scenario because they seldom allow to make use of all the knowledge that we might have at hand. visualization techniques that have been used for a long time for data visualization can also be used to visualize certain forms of knowledge, resulting in a more efficient data mining process. We present a unifying approach for knowledge visualization based on dimension reduction (DR) that allows to represent rules, cases, models and correlations on a low-dimensional visualization space in a consistent way.

We recently discovered that C-shaped sub-wavelength (nano) metallic apertures when irradiated at specific resonance frequencies have extraordinary power transmission five to six orders of magnitude beyond what is observed for conventional round or square apertures. These apertures produce optical spot sizes as small as 25-50 nm using visible light in the near-field of the aperture with a brightness 10-100 times higher than that of the illuminating beam. A proper understanding into this remarkable phenomenon can aid in the development and understanding of a multitude of applications of these apertures including dense data storage, particle manipulation, and nanoscale photonic devices. Current scalar visualization approaches typically are insufficient to significantly aid in the understanding of these complex near-field optical problems. For example, two common approaches involving either visualization of scalar electromagnetic wave amplitudes in 2-D or rudimentary arrow plots of the vector fields produced in Finite-Difference-Time-Domain simulations are clearly inadequate. Both techniques provide only partial insight into the problem, as only specific planes can be visualized and therefore the global structure of the fields cannot be readily inferred. Understanding of the three-dimensional electromagnetic vector fields and energy flows related to the illumination of nano-sized apertures is critically important in near-field applications, as simple scalar analysis is not suitable at these small dimensions [8]. An ideal visualization tool that has not been used before in studying the optical behavior of near-field apertures is three-dimensional vector field topology. The global view of the vector field structure is deduced by locating singularities (critical points) within the field and augmenting these points with nearby streamlines.
