Satellite sensors such as Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) have provided new datasets for monitoring regional and urban air quality. Satellite sensors provide comprehensive geospatial information on air quality with both qualitative imagery and quantitative data, such as aerosol optical depth. Yet, there has been limited application of these new datasets in air quality policy. One promising approach to more directly link satellite sensor data to air quality policy is to integrate satellite sensor data with air quality parameters and models. This paper presents the capabilities and limitations of applying satellite sensor data to air quality policy, focusing on the applied use of these data for a new rule to limit transport of particulate matter across state boundaries. As an example, we present a new visualization technique to integrate satellite sensor data, ground-based data, source apportionment models, and back trajectory analysis.

For ink jet printing processes the ink media interaction has been described frequently in the literature. Most of the time a microscopic analysis has been done on printing results, sometimes in situ visualisation techniques have been used.13 In situ visualization techniques are not easily amenable for small droplet sizes, while practical printing experiments typically are done using these small dot sizes but the transient behaviour of the fundamental underlying processes has been lost in the final printout. In this paper a combination of numerical simulations and real small size impingement studies are compared with microscopic analyses of the resultant dot patterns on the receiver. The results of the microscopic analyses on individual dots can be used and compared with older data in the literature,13 and can be related to the theories that can describe the spreading, absorption, and evaporation phenomena, and that can explain the influence of the media design on the ultimate image quality.

Shape analysis of hippocampi in schizophrenia has been preformed previously using the spherical harmonic SPHARM description. In these studies, the left and right hippocampi are aligned independently and the spatial relation between them is not explored. This paper presents a new SPHARM-based technique which examines not only the individual shape information of the two hippocampi but also the spatial relation between them. The left and right hippocampi are treated as a single shape configuration. A ploy-shape alignment algorithm is developed for aligning configurations of multiple SPHARM surfaces as follows: (1) the total volume is normalized;(2) the parameter space is aligned for creating the surface correspondence;(3) landmarks are created by a uniform sampling of multiple surfaces for each configuration;(4) a quaternion-based algorithm is employed to align each landmark representation to the mean configuration through the least square rotation and translation iteratively until the mean converges. After applying the poly-shape alignment algorithm, a point distribution model is applied to aligned landmarks for feature extraction. Classification is performed using Fisher's linear discriminant with an effective feature selection scheme. Applying the above procedure to our hippocampal data (14 controls versus 25 schizophrenics, all right-handed males), we achieve the best cross-validation accuracy of 92%;supporting the idea that the whole shape configuration of the two hippocampi provides valuable information in detecting schizophrenia. The results of an ROC analysis and a visualization of discriminative patterns are also included.

Power system visualization is becoming an increasingly important topic, especially as it relates to showing real-time data about the power market to those who need that data to support market decisions. There is a wide tool set of visualizations available to the visualization designers, and tool used is highly dependent on the application desired. This paper explores the various types of power system visualizations, and describes several tools available to the visualization designer that may be used to get the data to those who need it in a meaningful and constructive way. Recommendations and design tips are given on when and how to use the various available tools.

Public databases today can be constructed with a wide variety of authoring and management structures. The widespread appeal of Internet search engines suggests that public information be made open and available to common search strategies, making accessible information that would otherwise be hidden by the infrastructure and software interfaces of a traditional database management system. We present the construction and organizational details for managing NOVA, the National Online Volumetric Archive. As an archival effort of the Visible Human Project for supporting medical visualization research, archiving 3D multimodal radiological teaching files, and enhancing medical education with volumetric data, our overall database structure is simplified;archives grow by accruing information, but seldom have to modify, delete, or overwrite stored records. NOVA is being constructed and populated so that it is transparent to the Internet;that is, much of its internal structure is mirrored in HTML allowing internet search engines to investigate, catalog, and link directly to the deep relational structure of the collection index. The key organizational concept for NOVA is the Image Content Group (ICG), an indexing strategy for cataloging incoming data as a set structure rather than by keyword management. These groups are managed through a series of XML files and authoring scripts. We cover the motivation for Image Content Groups, their overall construction, authorship, and management in XML, and the pilot results for creating public data repositories using this strategy.

This paper presents new approach in application of picture languages for cognitive analysis and reasoning of selected medical visualization. It will be shown new opportunities for applying these methods to undertake tasks of the automatic understanding of image semantics in intelligent medical information or computer-aided diagnosis systems. These systems are applied in various tasks supporting decisions taken in the wide area of health care and medical imaging. The possibility of obtaining the information about semantic content of the medical images may contribute considerably to the creation of new intelligent cognitive medical systems. This article shows that structural techniques of artificial intelligence may be applied in the case of tasks related to automatic classification and machine perception of semantic pattern content in order to determine the medical meaning of the images. In the paper, we describe some examples presenting ways of applying such techniques in the creation of cognitive vision systems for selected classes of medical images.

The effects of surface roughness on production of steel sheet are critically reviewed. New developments in the measurement and characterisation of surface roughness seem likely to improve our understanding of its effect on sheet metal production. Much useful information can still be acquired by 2D techniques but increasingly the evidence is that sheet metal surface roughness is better measured and characterised by 3D methods. The facility for direct surface visualization in 3D is shown to be particularly helpful. When measuring 3D the measurement area size and sampling space are critical and for evaluation the filtering of surface data into roughness and waviness is more complicated than for 2D profiles.

The range of color spaces for possible use with digital photography presents challenges and opportunities for engineers, developers and users of digital cameras. This paper will provide an overview and comparison of a sub-set of these color spaces, with specific consideration for digital photography. Primarily the RGB or red, green and blue color spaces will be compared and although other spaces, such as CIELAB and Yu'v', will be mentioned. Background will be provided with respect to key considerations for design and use of color spaces for digital photography. data will be presented on color space uniformity using a radial sampling of the OSA Uniform Color Scales and tritanopic confusion lines. In addition, color difference statistics across a fixed sampling will be used to assess the similarity of color spaces and to quantify the resulting error when color spaces are incorrectly assigned. Finally, the gamut shapes will be compared using procrustes analysis of a set of gamut landmark colors. The resulting dendrogram provides a means of visualizing relative similarities of the gamut shapes.

Sammon's mapping is an important non-linear projection technique that has been widely applied to the visualization of high dimensional data. However when dealing with sparse data, the object relations induced by the map become often meaningless. In this paper, we present a new Sammon algorithm (SSammon) that overcomes this problem by previously transforming the dissimilarity matrix in an appropriate manner. The connection between our algorithm and a kernelized version of Sammon's mapping is also studied. The new model has been applied to the high dimensional and sparse problem of word relation visualization. We report that SSammon outperforms two widely used alternatives proposed in the literature.
