This paper presents new approach in application of picture languages for cognitive analysis and reasoning of selected medical visualization. It will be shown new opportunities for applying these methods to undertake tasks of the automatic understanding of image semantics in intelligent medical information or computer-aided diagnosis systems. These systems are applied in various tasks supporting decisions taken in the wide area of health care and medical imaging. The possibility of obtaining the information about semantic content of the medical images may contribute considerably to the creation of new intelligent cognitive medical systems. This article shows that structural techniques of artificial intelligence may be applied in the case of tasks related to automatic classification and machine perception of semantic pattern content in order to determine the medical meaning of the images. In the paper, we describe some examples presenting ways of applying such techniques in the creation of cognitive vision systems for selected classes of medical images.

The range of color spaces for possible use with digital photography presents challenges and opportunities for engineers, developers and users of digital cameras. This paper will provide an overview and comparison of a sub-set of these color spaces, with specific consideration for digital photography. Primarily the RGB or red, green and blue color spaces will be compared and although other spaces, such as CIELAB and Yu'v', will be mentioned. Background will be provided with respect to key considerations for design and use of color spaces for digital photography. data will be presented on color space uniformity using a radial sampling of the OSA Uniform Color Scales and tritanopic confusion lines. In addition, color difference statistics across a fixed sampling will be used to assess the similarity of color spaces and to quantify the resulting error when color spaces are incorrectly assigned. Finally, the gamut shapes will be compared using procrustes analysis of a set of gamut landmark colors. The resulting dendrogram provides a means of visualizing relative similarities of the gamut shapes.

Sammon's mapping is an important non-linear projection technique that has been widely applied to the visualization of high dimensional data. However when dealing with sparse data, the object relations induced by the map become often meaningless. In this paper, we present a new Sammon algorithm (SSammon) that overcomes this problem by previously transforming the dissimilarity matrix in an appropriate manner. The connection between our algorithm and a kernelized version of Sammon's mapping is also studied. The new model has been applied to the high dimensional and sparse problem of word relation visualization. We report that SSammon outperforms two widely used alternatives proposed in the literature.

The development of spectral libraries for specific vegetation species and soils is useful for identifying different physiological or physical-chemical characteristics. Usually, spectral libraries are provided as a data-base add-in of current commercial software used for analyzing hyperspectral imagery. The use of those databases requires installation of the software in the user's machine for either visualizing or using the spectral libraries. There are also spectral libraries available on the web but the data is static and partitioned by spectrum of vegetation or soil because the size of the files of actual hyperspectral. images precludes it's publication on the web. In this paper, a web-based simulation environment for generating byperspectral synthetic imagery of cotton plots is presented. The system was developed using Java and is based on a previous synthetic imagery program(1). The mathematical and numerical formulation of the model is briefly sketched. The core computing components of the simulation environment were written in C for their computational efficiency. The emerging Java Native Interface (JNI) technique and standard Java techniques were used to design a user-friendly simulator. The simulation system provides interactive user control and real time visualization of the resulting hyperspectral image through standard web browsers. It shows potential for providing web-based hyperspectral libraries, in the form of images, for public use.

visualization of large data sets is a demanding task, especially if different users are interested in different aspects of the same data set. Today's visualization techniques often do not distinguish different aspects and thus visualize all aspects of the data, which leads to overcrowded and cluttered representations. Moreover, users are provided with information irrelevant to them. In this paper we describe an event-based approach for visualizing large data sets. The basic idea is to let users describe interesting aspects of the data by means of events and then adapt the visual representation of the data on occurrence of events. We present a formal description of events, assuming that the data are given in relational form. Furthermore, a model for event-based visualization is developed. A brief overview of an early realization of the model along with first visual results is part of this paper.

A common task in data mining is the visualization of multivariate objects on scatterplots, allowing human observers to perceive subtle inter-relations in the dataset such as outliers, groupings or other regularities. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) is a well known exploratory data analysis family of techniques that produce one display on which inter-object similarity relationships are preserved. The algorithm scales with the square of the number of visualized data, which limits its application to small datasets. In order to alleviate this limitation, we associate MDS with three different clustering models, namely the learning vector quantization, the k-means and the dendrograms. We propose to perform dimensionality reduction on a reduced set of cluster centers, to which the data are added using a relative MDS mapping. Our experiments show that this approach allows to obtain displays of large datasets with fairly good visualization properties, when compared with the display obtained by a direct mapping of the whole dataset.

Geologists routinely perform three-dimensional analyzes to understand and describe spatial relationships. The end product of any data analysis obtained from structural or stratigraphic geological studies is usually a set of complex surfaces. The graphic presentation of data is important because it influences the geological interpretation of natural phenomena. The purpose of this paper is to present geometric and visual modelling tools and methods that allow geologists to incorporate geological interpretation during the data input process and automatically obtain a realistic three-dimensional simulation of the real shape of a complex geologic structure. The procedure will also provide a graph for any (cross or oblique) section of the structure. Such displays are particularly useful for people who are not familiar with contour maps to help them "see" unusual or special features and to improve the ability to interpret a map. Geometric modelling of these complex surfaces is based on an interpolation method for discontinuous parametric surfaces using finite elements. Visual modelling is based on photorealistic image synthesis following the ray-tracing method. Our techniques are generic (not tied to a specific program) and discussed in terms of general capabilities (not specific program parameters). (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

A new method of low contrast images analysis and segmentation is outlined. The one has providers high sensitivity to detection of visually invisible low contrast areas and simultaneous stability to influence of local small brightness variations. The new method consists of the following four steps. 1) Forming a moving window of size (30). Analyzed image brightness pixels into the bounds of the window are considered as coefficients some virtual nonrecursive digital filter. The one is characterized by its spectral characteristic. It gives possibility for comparing to each pixel of analyzed image its virtual spectral characteristic. 2) As information features for further analysis there are using resonance points (magnitudes and frequencies) of virtual magnitude-frequency and group-delay characteristics (namely it stipulated using the method designation as multiparameter topological resonance one). 3) visualization new synthesized features and separate analysis of the new images. 4) Multiparameter information fusion into one resulting image (if it is needed) on base self-organizing map method. On base our experimental investigations it had been established importance virtual group-delay function (i.e. new information characteristic) for tasks detection and segmentation low contrast fuzzy regions of analyzed images. Experiments were made with examples of real low contrast images: X-ray CT digital mammograms, and geophysical field images. For all situations there were obtained very good practical results.

This report describes a novel approach to collection and analysis of radiocarbon data due to the unique design of the Naval Research Laboratory Trace Element Accelerator Mass Spectrometry system. In this approach, targets are loaded on the cathode wheel such that samples are clustered in groups of five between standards. Each target is measured until the external error asymptotically reaches a constant value and the internal error dominates, or until a predefined time limit is reached. These measurements are repeated until the desired level of counting statistics is attained. Cycle control software saves the measured beam currents and count rate, as well as all system parameters to disc at fixed intervals throughout each measurement. data visualization software has aided in system diagnosis by exposing relationships between the measured isotope ratios and system parameters. A filtering algorithm is employed to the data set of each target measurement in an attempt to achieve a Gaussian distribution. Final results are generated by a radiocarbon calculator that allows a user to select which target measurements to treat as samples, standards and blanks, and calculates the desired values (i.e. conventional radiocarbon age, percent modern carbon, etc.) with full error propagation. Currently, a Microsoft Access(R) relational database is being developed which will be integrated into the existing LabVIEW(R) control, filtering and calculation programs in order to streamline the process from sample submission to report generation, as well as improve quality control. We propose a virtual earth magnetosphere system (VEMS), which is a new research environment for satellites observation data analysis and computer simulations. The VEMS is constructed on 3D visualization tools, which are programmable and interactive. We can handle a variety of phenomena over the Earth magnetosphere at an arbitrary period from an arbitrary viewpoint. In this study, we constructed the VEMS on a 3D visualization tool, Application visualization System AVS/Express Developer. A recent version of the AVS supports time-dependent visualization functions using time-loop modules. We have applied the VEMS to aurora and AKR observation by satellites. In the VEMS, we could successfully visualized the locations of AKR (auroral kilometric radiation) source regions on assumption that the AKR is excited on the magnetic field lines connected with aurora illumination regions on the Earth. As a possible future development, we propose two systems: combination with network database system and with virtual reality system.
