With the huge amount of available textual data, we need to find convenient ways to process the data and to get invaluable information. It appears that the use of factorial correspondence analysis allows to get most of the information included in the data. Besides, even after the data processing, we still have a big amount of material and we need visualization tools to display it. In this paper, we show how to use correspondence analysis in a sensible way and we give an application on the analysis of the internal scientific production of an important research center in France : the INRIA, the french national institute for research in computer science and control

DDFgraph: a tool for dynamic data flow graphs visualization

DDFgraph allows extraction and visualization of dynamic data-flow graphs computed at runtime. It currently relies on a Lisp interpreter modified to monitor data use (both of global and local variables) during program execution and to detect the corresponding data flow, namely the value of variables 'flowing' from one point of the program to another. A companion database stores this flow and produces, on demand, its representation as a graph for dot. Furthermore, the flow graph can be manipulated, in order to reduce the size of the graph, through extraction of some parts of particular interest and/or through compaction of given subparts leaving visible only global flow.

We describe our modifications of the technique of parallel coordinate plot for supporting visual exploration of object classes, in particular, resulting from cluster analysis. We strived at creating a tool that would be suitable for analysis of large datasets. The basic parallel coordinate plot technique with the traditional method for representing classes, multi-coloured brushing, fails to properly convey class-relevant information due to tremendous overlapping of lines. We have applied two general approaches to handling large amounts of data: aggregation and filtering. Thus, information concerning the distribution of characteristics in classes and the entire dataset is shown on parallel coordinates in an aggregated form. This is combined with displaying individual characteristics only for user-selected object subsets.

Many applications require comparison between alternative scenarios;most support it poorly. A subjunctive interface supports comparison through its facilities for parallel setup, viewing and control of scenarios. To evaluate the usability and benefits of these facilities, we ran experiments in which subjects used both a simple and a subjunctive interface to make comparisons in a census data set. In the first experiment, subjects reported higher satisfaction and lower workload with the subjunctive interface, and relied less on interim marks on paper. Subjects also used fewer interface actions. However, we found no reduction in task completion time, mainly because some subjects encountered problems in using the facilities for setting up and controlling scenarios. Based on a detailed analysis of subjects' actions we redesigned the subjunctive interface to alleviate frequent problems, such as accidentally adjusting only one scenario when the intention was to adjust them all. At the end of a second, five-session experiment, users of this redesigned interface completed tasks 27% more quickly than with the simple interface. © 2004 ACM.

One of the first questions we pose when we have a new data set to explore is: are there any obvious groupings in the data? These clusters reveal the structure of the data set and make the data easier to understand. Cluster analysis is a classic problem and there are many tools for it. The problem is that these methods often give conflicting and too fine-grained results for practical use. As well, they are accompanied with the danger of over-interpreting the data. Another drawback in these techniques is that they do not usually provide an opportunity for interactive exploration. We propose a simple user interface and method to interactively explore clusters in data sets. The method is based on a rapid dynamic query and it can detect both hierarchical and partitional clusters.

Summary form only given. A self-illustrating phenomenon is an image which exposes the science behind it. Some famous examples are pictures of iron filings aligned along magnetic lines of force, sand particles collecting at the stationary points of the standing waves of a violin, stress in a mechanical part revealed through birefringence, and particle tracks in a bubble chamber. Such images brilliantly combine experimental design, analysis, and visualization. Quoting J. Tukey, "the general purposes of conducting experiments and analyzing data match, point by point". We argue in this talk that computer tools for visual analysis should normally be conceived of as aids in constructing computational visual experiments; and that the resulting visualizations be consciously designed to help validate or invalidate the hypothesis being tested by the experiment.

visualization interfaces that offer multiple coordinated views on a particular set of data items are useful for navigating and exploring complex information spaces. In application areas like customer relationship management (CRM) or business intelligence (BI), for example, structured customer or company data is often associated to text-based information like telemarketing transcripts or trade press articles. Supporting the analysis of such text information and related structured data is a major challenge for current CRM and BI tools. In this paper, we present a system for visually analyzing these particular information spaces based on a multiple views paradigm. The system brings together views on text similarity, text categories, and associated relational attributes; visual overlay techniques help to keep track of navigation and selection operations in complementary views. The paper sketches an application example and summarizes results from an initial usability evaluation.

This work discusses the relevance of architectural design towards the field of information visualization by showing historical and contemporary examples of built structures with encoded information. This overview should demonstrate that information visualization in three dimensional physical environments was already created throughout the history of architecture, even within different cultures. From these examples some design principles for spatial coding of information will be extracted that can be transferred to the field of information visualization. Additionally architectural principles are related to metaphors from different fields of knowledge.

As part of an ongoing drive to enhance oil recovery from several fractured carbonate reservoirs in Oman, Shell's Carbonate Development Team and Petroleum Development Oman have applied a workflow and research software package aimed at better characterizing the complex subsurface. The workflow comprises several steps, each one supported by a multidisciplinary research program, and implemented in an integrated software environment for application to field development and enhanced oil recovery projects. The software tool, which interacts with the existing Static and Dynamic modeling packages, produces integrated reservoir models including fracture specific information. The capabilities include: (1) data integration and visualization (2) Constraints definition (from subsurface, analogue outcrops, geomechanics, etc.) (3) 3D fracture modeling (4) Link to reservoir simulation. The tool is flexible, such that any type of well data (Static and Dynamic), seismic data (attributes and interpretations), and constraints can be brought together in a single display. An analysis package allows rapid visual and interactive structural analysis to be made, with quantification of structural elements. Constraints are derived from outcrop and subsurface field examples, geomechanical data and sandbox analogue experiments. A key constraint includes mechanical layering as a control on fracture geometries. Fracture networks are generated following the defined constraints combining statistics and mechanical rules. The fracture network properties useful for the Dynamic simulation can be quickly extracted. Because emphasis is placed on characterization and maximum use of the relevant constraints, the tool helps ensuring that the fracture modeling time is spent on understanding and assessing the uncertainties. Today, more so than ever, patents play an important role in helping inventors and organizations protect their intellectual property. With a 140% increase in the number of patents granted over the last 25 years, a rich source of data is available that can be examined to better understand changing trends in patent grants. We discuss visualization techniques that allow us to examine the classification of more than 2.5 million patents in an attempt to improve understanding of how an assignee's patent portfolio, and the patent space as a whole, is partitioned and evolves over time.
