Parallel coordinates are widely used in many applications for visualization of multivariate data. Because of the nature of parallel coordinates, the visualization technique is often used for data overview. However, when the number of tuples to be visualized becomes very large, this technique makes it difficult to distinguish the overall structure. In This work we present a novel technique which uses a classification approach, the self-organizing map (an unsupervised learning algorithm), to solve this problem by creating an initial clustering of the data. By initially only visualizing the resulting representational clusters, the inherited global structure can be shown. Using linked views and allowing the user to perform drill-down and filtering on these representations reveals the single data items without loss of context.

The purpose of This work is to demonstrate that a tight dynamical connection may be made between text and interactive visualization imagery. It shows that a bi-directional linkage may be created between the image space of a visualization program and hypertext space so that dynamical image and text representations of a data object are synchronized, thus maintaining the consistency of the visual information and information context. The paper begins with an analysis of the relationship between text and image, drawing upon examples from the history of art. It then discusses how text and imagery may be bound to improve the communication of information. Finally, a simple mapping application is created employing XML, HTML, and scalable vector graphics (SVG) demonstrating these principles.

Interpretability of fuzzy models has become one of the major topics in the field of fuzzy modeling. visualization that makes input-output relationships interpretable is effective in extracting useful knowledge from unknown data. This paper presents visualization method that considers the visibility of fuzzy models. This method identifies clusters that have different statistical features, and projects the data to the "fusion axes", which are linear combinations of the multiple input variables, considering the distribution of each cluster in the projected space. This paper applies the proposed method to artificial data and also to collected data from the mobile robot, and shows that the proposed method can extract useful knowledge from the obtained visible and interpretable models.

The self-organizing map (SOM) has emerged as one of the popular choices for clustering data; however, when it comes to point density accuracy of codebooks or reliability and interpretability of the map, the SOM leaves much to be desired. In this paper, we compare the newly developed K-means hierarchical (KMH) clustering algorithm to the SOM. We also introduce a new initialization scheme for the K-means that improves codebook placement and, propose a novel visualization scheme that combines the principal component analysis (PCA) and minimal spanning tree (MST) in an arrangement that ensures reliability of the visualization unlike the SOM. A practical application of the algorithm is demonstrated on a challenging bioinformatics problem.

A number of researchers have designed visualisation systems that consist of multiple components, through which data and interaction commands flow. Such multistage (hybrid) models can be used to reduce algorithmic complexity, and to open up intermediate stages of algorithms for inspection and steering. In this paper, we present work on aiding the developer and the user of such algorithms through the application of interactive visualisation techniques. We present a set of tools designed to profile the performance of other visualisation components, and provide further functionality for the exploration of high dimensional data sets. Case studies are provided, illustrating the application of the profiling modules to a number of data sets. Through this work we are exploring ways in which techniques traditionally used to prepare for visualisation runs, and to retrospectively analyse them, can find new uses within the context of a multi-component visualisation system.

A method using implanted seeds as fiducials to register ultrasound (US) images with fluoroscopic images for prostate brachytherapy dose analysis is proposed. In a simulation study, transformed point clouds with 154 points were sampled at different sampling rates with different levels of noise applied and then registered with the original imaging data. Superior performance in comparison to conventional four point fiducial registration was demonstrated. The root-mean-squared-distance at registration was 0.962mm when 25% of the points were used as fiducials and with noise level at 3mm. A phantom with 64 implanted seeds was scanned by CT at 1.5mm intervals and by step-section US at 2.5mm intervals. Fluoroscopic images of the phantom were also taken at several different projection angles. Coordinates of implanted seeds were determined for each imaging modality. CT-US and fluoroscopy-US registration were then carried out using the implanted seeds as fiducials. Over 90% overlap between the segmented CT prostate volume and US prostate volume was observed at registration, and the distance between the centers of the registered volumes was 3mm. The mean distance between the seed coordinates at registration was 2.5mm for CT and US, and 3mm for fluoroscopy and US. These results suggest that registration of fluoroscopic images with US images of the prostate can be effectively accomplished by using implanted seeds as fiducials. Consequently, accurate US-fluoroscopic image registration should facilitate intraoperative radiation dosimetry for permanent prostate brachytherapy.

data visualization is an important technique that helps in understanding and analysis of complex data. Most of current-web-based geo-spatial data visualization products use two-dimensional visualization. A tool that uses the combination of two-and three-dimensional visualization can provide extra spatial dimension as well as flexible usability. Current Web technologies: scalable vector graphics (SVG), virtual reality modeling language (VRML), and extensible 3D (X3D) provide a necessary foundation for such a tool. In this paper, we present a general framework for effective integration and Web-based presentation of complex heterogeneous spatial-temporal data sets. This framework facilitates interpretation, exploration and analysis of large volume of data with significant geo-spatial and temporal characteristics. Advantages of this approach include improved visualization of geo-spatial and temporal raw data; better navigation and selection of data; and intuitive user interface. A Web-based road traffic visualization system illustrates this approach using the Twin Cities road traffic data.
