Event visualization holds the promise of alleviating information overload in digital libraries. We propose a methodology for evaluating a coordinated event visualization tool called COPLINK spatio-temporal visualizer (STV). The methodology examines different event dimensions and compares STV with another frequently used crime analysis tool (Microsoft Excel). We briefly describe the experimental procedure and results, and discuss future directions.

This work presents a significant extension of the information flocking concept and algorithms originally presented by G. Proctor and C. Winter (1998). It introduces a novel way of visualizing time-varying datasets using the emergent characteristics of self organization and dynamic behavior simulation. The current prototype uses both spatial clustering and behavioral animation to represent temporal data similarities by simulating the time-varying evolution of dynamic datasets. Instead of presenting exact data values, the way how the data values change over time is being visualized. In addition, the current information flocking method is capable of visualizing short-term temporal events or long-term time-varying data evolutions by automatically generating different recognizable motion typologies. This research show how artificial life principles have been merged with the field of information visualization. Several aspects of the original information flocking algorithms have been improved to incorporate the real-time evaluation of continuous dynamic data value streams and to generate multiple stable, recognizable atomic as well as collective dynamic behaviors that reflect time-varying dataset changes and relative data value evolutions. The main information flocking principles are demonstrated through a visualization of historical stock market quotes.

This work introduces a tool for mapping high dimensional data to a low-dimensional space by combining concepts from clustering and synchronization of pulse-coupled oscillators. Each data point is represented by an integrate-and-fire oscillator which is characterized by a phase variable. Using an appropriate coupling function, we show that the relative values of the phases evolve to reflect the proximity of the data in the original space. As a result, the oscillators phases could be used as a 1-D representation of the original space. To generate a 2-D phase space, we apply the synchronization procedure twice with different resolution parameters or different distance measures. The proposed approach is used to visualize the classical Iris data and two collection of images.

The evolution of computational science over the last decade has resulted in a dramatic increase in raw problem solving capabilities. This growth has given rise to advances in scientific and engineering simulations that have put a high demand on tools for high-performance large-scale data exploration and analysis. These simulations have the potential to generate large amounts of data. Humans, however are relatively poor at gaining insight from raw numerical data, and as a result, have used visualization as a tool for understanding, interpreting and exploring data of all types and sizes. Allowing for efficient visual explorations of data, however, requires that the ratio of knowledge gained versus the cost of the visualization be maximized. This, in turn, mandates the integration of principles from human perception. Understanding perception as it relates to visualization requires that we understand not only the biology of the human visual system, but principles from vision theory, and perceptual psychology as well. This panel is the result of bringing together practioners and researchers from a broad spectrum of interests relating to the ability to maximize the amount of information that is effectively perceived from a given visualization. Position statements will be given by researchers interested in perceptual psychology and the perception of natural images, integrating art and design principles, non-photorealistic rendering techniques, and the use of global illumination methods to provide benefical perceptual cues.

Web search process can be time consuming and frustrating due to the enormous amount of information available on the Web. Recently, Web spiders with information extraction techniques that analyze retrieved documents have been proposed. This leads to an extended search process in which hypertext structure is enriched with semantic annotations. As consequence graph visualization techniques must be up-to-date for a better understanding of modified results. In particular additional semantic information must be taken into account without forcing the user browsing through unnecessary documents. As a first attempt towards graph visualization for semantic crawling, in this work we describe an example of XML-based visualisation system that provides a semantic visualization by means of dynamic fields that are associated to each node.

A significant amount of resources and effort go toward ensuring that all unit personnel maintain a mission ready status, specifically in US Air Force Space Command (AFSPC). Personnel folders used to track and document readiness activities (called Individual Qualification Folders [IQFs]) are paper-based, and this presents additional difficulties on top of basic workload demands. Limitations associated with using paper-based IQFs have the potential to impact the mission readiness of an individual or entire unit. In this paper, we describe the cognitive engineering approach, design process, and concept of operations for an electronic IQF and mission-readiness support system called Records Evaluation, analysis, and data Interpretation (READI). READI is a server-based, PC-compatible system designed for use by AFSPC unit operations support staffs (e.g., training, evaluation, and crew force management staffs). It is intended to support basic IQF maintenance and operations support staff work associated with ensuring the mission readiness of unit personnel. The supported work areas encompass 1) recurring personnel training and evaluation;2) tracking, managing, and scheduling mission-ready requirements and activities to ensure mission-ready requirements are met;and 3) ensuring the quality of IQFs, IQF content, and mission-ready activities and materials. In addition to supporting operations support staffs in AFSPC, READI is relevant to operations support staffs throughout the DoD and potentially to training management outside of the DoD. The research in market segmentation includes two main parts. We first focus on discussing the market segmentation problem by applying clustering technique in data mining discipline. The partition of market is based on users' preference data and not on the commonly used one, users' attribute data. In that way, the definition of distance between two customers by their preference to a set of specified competing products is given. Instead of starting from scratch, the self-organization feature map is adopted as a basic clustering framework. In order to process the preference data, some necessary modifications are made. Both theoretical analysis and practical experiment are presented in this paper, which make us confident of that the algorithm we proposed has excellent performance and could discover the potential clustering patterns in the complex datasets. The second part focuses on displaying market segmentation structure. We apply visualization technique to represent the market structure clearly in a two-dimensional plane so that the marketers can make their market strategies easier. The two main parts are organized as an integrated approach. Such an approach includes three core steps: preference data collecting step, preference data clustering step by SOM neural networks and visualization step by ideal point model. There are three main advantages of the approach: firstly, the approach is based on well-defined mathematic models and can be supported by a series of numeral methods. Secondly, it does not have to face the tough market variable selection problem because we focus on preference data, not on evaluators' attribute data (demographic or geographic data etc.). Finally, the approach can produce multi-scale view of market segmentation results. The experiments show that the approach yields meaningful results and is comparable and complemented to the most general ones.

Fisher discriminant analysis (DA) has recently shown promise in dimensionality reduction of high dimensional DNA data. However, the 1D projection provided by this method is an optimal Bayesian classifier only when the intraclass data patterns are purely Gaussian distributed. Unfortunately, it has been well recognized that most DNA expression data are much more realistically represented by a Gaussian mixture model (GMM), which allows for multiple cluster centroids per class. When a data set from such a GMM is projected onto a 1D subspace, its inherent multi-modal nature may be partially or completely obscured. Consequently, traditional Fisher DA is quite inadequate when higher dimensional visualization (e.g. 2D or 3D) is necessary. The proposed technique addresses this problem and makes use of combined supervised and unsupervised learning techniques for several DNA microarray signal processing functions, including intraclass cluster discovery, optimal projection, and identification/selection of responsible gene groups. In particular, a cross-weighted Fisher DA is proposed and its abilities to reduce dimensionality and to visualize data sets are evaluated.

Baseline Excursion analysis (BEX) provides a statistical method to analyze wafer yield distributions. A novel graphical visualization scheme has been developed that supports inspection, analysis, and comparison of yield distributions much more effectively than standard yield histograms. In a first step, wafer yield is transformed to defect density by an appropriate model such as Poisson or Stopper model. Total defect density is subsequently modeled as the sum of Baseline and Excursion defect density components. Parameters of both distributions are extracted from a curve fit to the data. Key figures such as Baseline limited yield and Excursion limited yield are estimated and allow to tailor, focus and control yield improvement activities.

The exploration of large geospatial data for finding patterns and understanding underlying processes is one of the challenges in geovisualization research. New methods are needed for effective extraction of patterns and appropriate visualization tools are necessary to support knowledge construction throughout the exploration process. Based on an approach to combine visual and computational methods, a visualization environment has been developed to support visual data mining and knowledge discovery tasks. This environment integrates non-geographic information spaces with maps and other graphics that allow users to explore patterns and attribute relationships. The development of the tool intends to facilitate knowledge construction using a number of steps that underline data mining and knowledge discovery methodology. In order to investigate the effectiveness of the design concept, an empirical usability testing is planed to assess the tool's ability to meet user performance and satisfaction. In this test, different options of map-based and interactive visualizations of the output of a self-organizing map (SOM) are used to explore a socio-demographic dataset. The study emphasizes the knowledge discovery process based on exploratory tasks and visualization operations. This paper describes the usability framework used to guide the design, and examines key aspects of the evaluation of such visual-computational environment.
