The approach of modern archaeology to the study of the evolution of ancient human societies is based on the acquisition and analysis of many types of data. It is well known that in archaeology large use is done of digital technologies and computer applications for data acquisition, storage, analysis and visualization. The amount of information coming from remote sensing, from acquisition of 3D artifacts images by scanners laser, from GPS precise reference of geographical points and from other sciences are increasing at a large extent the amount of data that it need to be stored and made available for analysis. Such data must, however, be analyzed if they are to become valuable information and knowledge. The data analysis use advanced methods developed in mathematics, informatics, and physics and in other natural and human sciences. Moreover the use of virtual archaeology as a new approach to the narration and visualization in archaeology, is expanding rapidly, not only in the museum and archaeology professions, but also in the broadcast media, tourism and heritage industries. The inevitable result of this is an exponential increase of the amount and complexity of information that must be acquired, transferred, stored, processed and analyzed. From another side natural disasters, wars and terrorism created enormous damages to the archaeological heritage and in many case destroyed definitively all information about ancient civilizations. It is urgent a long term project for acquiring at least the archaeological information.

EGOMiner, stands for enhanced gene ontology mining system, is a CORBA based tool developed for genomic and proteomic data analysis. One key function of EGOMiner is to provide biological data interpretation based on gene ontology with quantitative and statistical analysis and visualization by direct acyclic graph. Cross comparison of multiple experimental studies is supported. The other function is quality analysis of microarray chip images. The input is raw chip data and output is visualization of the data quality of the chip image. This is system significantly improves the GoMiner system that was designed and developed by the authors.

A key scientific Web intelligence goal is to produce visualizations of academic Web spaces in order to reveal subject structures and identify relationships between different fields. We introduce an exploratory technique, vocabulary spectral analysis, designed to build intuition to help design effective procedures for clustering. We apply VSA to New Zealand University Web sites. The results suggest that subject-based academic Web site clustering is possible but requires extensive data filtering to give effective subject-based clusters.

Scientific visualization is a powerful and popular technique and is very useful in many areas of science and engineering. It mainly uses computer graphics to view or explore three-dimensional (3D) objects, natural phenomenon, or numerical data. Virtual reality (VR) is an application of scientific visualization and is getting popular for applications associated with high-performance computing. To help Council of Agriculture, Taiwan (COA), promote the importance of farmland conservation, and to help elementary education authorities on basic agricultural, ecological education, in this study, a 3D virtual environment is developed to demonstrate the virtual farmland theme and associated temporal and spatial data and information. The system features (1) construction and visualization of the virtual farmland environment, (2) speedup and animation of the embedded objects, (3) multimedia effects, (4) display of the numerical analysis results of crops growing affected by nitrogen in land simulated by 2DSOIL model, sand (5) display of the numerical analysis results of groundwater flow and nitrogen transport in the farmland simulated by GMS-FEMWATER. Several computer graphics accelerating schemes, such as space partition, view frustum culling (VFC), billboard, and collision detection, were used to speedup the rendering. Users can immerse, navigate and interact with objects in the 3D virtual farmland ecology environment.

The self-organizing map (SOM) is widely accepted as a data visualization and cluster model for its ability to map high dimensional data in a low dimensional output space according to the data's similar features. However, this mapping process is time consuming and a large amount of iterations are needed in order to increase the accuracy of the data representation. This work describes how to apply the RGB color model to the initialization of the SOM neurons. The major feature is that the distribution of the neurons is closely related to the data distribution during the initialization of SOM. Therefore the iterations are greatly reduced and efficiency and accuracy of SOM are much improved. To evaluate our approach against traditional approaches we have conducted an experiment. The initial results show that the color model based 3-D SOM is very promising in the practical application.

The DICOM Gray Scale Display Function (GSDF) relates display contrast to the contrast threshold derived from the Barton Model (C-BM) of the human visual system. We have measured the contrast threshold (C-T) using a monochrome medical LCD monitor and graphics card under the conditions defined by the DICOM standard and compared the results to the Barten Model. A two Alternative Forced Choice (2AFC) observer performance test was used to measure contrast threshold. The 2AFC tests were given once to a large group of observers with varied medical imaging experience. A small subset of this group was tested multiple times over several months in order to examine intraobserver variability. The mean relative contrast (CT/CBM) associated with a 75% detection rate was found to be 0.508, with a standard deviation of 0.176. For the intraobserver tests, results improved after the first 3 trials. The mean C-T/C-BM values (and standard deviation) for the next 9 tests were 0.0980 (0.107), 0.244 (0.0928), and 0.398 (0.0855). The results indicate that contrast substantially less than I C-T/C-BM is detected based on the statistical criteria used. This can be explained based on the criteria for detection used in the classical observer tests that form the basis for the Barten model. Additionally, our data indicates significant differences amongst observers.

The properties of data networks are determined by routing protocols, link delays, traffic demands, and similar system parameters, which are not directly connected to the formal topology of the network's graph. Consequently, two different links, or source-destination (SD) pairs, could appear close in the network's topological layout, and yet be far apart when measured on the "functionality scale" of traffic flow. We present our own ideas regarding distance functions for network objects, the type of data that can be collected to determine such distances, and applications in network visualization, exploration, and monitoring, and in network tomography. This short paper is not intended as a survey of the topic but rather narrowly focuses on our own current thoughts on the topic

The objectives of this work include automatic recovery and visualization of a 3D chromosome structure from a sequence of 2D tomographic reconstruction images taken through the nucleus of a cell. Structure is very important for biologists as it affects chromosome functions, behavior of the cell and its state. Chromosome analysis is significant in the detection of diseases and in monitoring environmental gene mutations. The algorithm incorporates thresholding based on a histogram analysis with a polyline splitting algorithm, contour extraction via active contours, and detection of the 3D chromosome structure by establishing corresponding regions throughout the slices. visualization using point cloud meshing generates a 3D surface. The 3D triangular mesh of the chromosomes provides surface detail and allows a user to interactively analyze chromosomes using visualization software.

Software is typically improved and modified in small increments. These changes are usually stored in a configuration management or version control system and can be retrieved. We retrieved each individual modification made to a mature software project and proceeded to analyze them. We studied the characteristics of these modification requests (MRs), the interrelationships of the files that compose them, and their authors. We propose several metrics to quantify MRs, and use these metrics to create visualization graphs that can be used to understand the interrelationships.

We propose a basic skeletal feature representation of molecules with a graph called non-terminal vertex graph (NTG) that has no vertices of degree of 1. A software tool for NTG extraction was developed, and it was applied to structural feature analysis of dopamine antagonists that interact with four different types of receptors. The results suggest that the NTG analysis would be effective as an approach to chemical data mining and knowledge discovery on structure-activity relations of the drugs.
