This work proposes a new data analysis tool called Time-tunnel. Time-tunnel visualizes any numbers of time-series numerical data as individual charts in a 3D virtual space. Through direct manipulations on a computer screen, the user easily puts more than two different charts overlapped together to compare them in order to recognize the similarity or the difference among those data. Simultaneously a radar chart among those data at any time point is displayed to recognize the similarity and the correlation among them. In this way, using Time-tunnel, the user can visually analyse multiple time-series numerical data through interactive manipulations on a computer screen. Time-tunnel has not only aspects as a data analysis tool but also aspects as a chart-based multimedia presentation tool because Time-tunnel also treats multimedia data, i.e., texts, images, sounds and movies, as additional information represented by tags located at any point of charts. The authors also describe the usefulness of Time-tunnel as a multimedia presentation tool.

Enhanced and interactive visualization techniques are the key issues in improving the ability of users to comprehend and work with the large data sets. Various techniques have been used in the past incorporating different media and are applied to a wide range of application domains. In particular, 3D data representation often provides a more enhanced and intuitive user approach than the two dimensional approach. In this paper, we discuss several data visualization techniques with an emphasis on hierarchical data structures. We present a case study involving the implementation of a Web based application enabling the 3D visual access to grid network monitoring data. Geographically distributed computing nodes are arranged into "farms", which further contains a number of the organizationally distributed "clusters". The implemented visualization incorporates a geographical presentation of farms on a 3D model of the Earth and compares two tree-based techniques for the visualization of hierarchically organized clusters and nodes. We discuss the technology used to implement such an application and the achieved user benefits in terms of an enhanced display.

This paper proposes a new approach for rules discovering relationships between OLAP cube cells. Such relationships are based on frequent itemsets computation, which was always used in the literature as a first step for association rules generation. They define semantic links between cells of the OLAP cube. An algorithm to pragmatically extracting knowledge from data warehouses is proposed. Results of this algorithm should be shown in the graphical representation of the OLAP cube. Association rules discovery was successfully used for mining huge databases.

Understanding the run-time behavior of object-oriented legacy systems is a complex task due to factors such as late binding and polymorphism. Current approaches extract and use information from the complete execution trace of a system. The sheer size and complexity of such traces make their handling, storage, and analysis difficult. Current software systems which run almost nonstop do not permit such a full analysis. In this paper we present a lightweight approach based on the extraction of a condensed amount of information, e.g., measurements, that does not require a full trace. Using this condensed information, we propose a visualization approach which allows us to identify and understand certain aspects of the objects' lifetime such as their role played in the creation of other objects and the communication architecture they support.

Empirical investigations of citations to and from 150 journal articles published in the field of Information and Library Science (ILS) has enabled cross-mapping of the interdisciplinary evolution of the field. The publications were randomly drawn in six years between 1975 and 2000, with 25 articles each from the selected years. ANOVA tests reveal that although raw counts of self- and extradisciplinary-citations are not significantly different by year, they are different depending on whether it is from or to ILS. Nearly 30 disciplines hold mutual citations with ILS, and Computer Science, Communication, Management Science, Education, and Psychology are among those highly impact disciplines. visualization further depicts the clustering of the citing and cited disciplines. In general out-degree citations contain richer set of nodes than those of in-degree, but overall, the mapping of the interdisciplinary scope of the ILS field provides convincing evidence for the interdisciplinary nature of Library and Information Science.

Traditional framework for mining association rules has pointed out the derivation of many redundant rules. In order to be reliable in a decision making process, such discovered rules have to be both concise and easily understandable for users, and/or as an input to visualization tools [P. Adriaans et al. (1997)]. We present a graphical visualization prototype for handling generic bases of association rules. We discuss also the most adequate graphical visualization technique depending on the intrinsic structure of the generic bases of association rules. An interesting feature of the prototype is that it provides a "contextual" exploration of such rule set. Such exploration, based on the discovery of fuzzy meta-rules, enhances man-machine interaction by emulating a cooperative behavior.

The extensible markup language (XML), which has emerged as a standard for structuring documents, notably for World Wide Web is of great interest to the bioinformatics research community. Biological sequences that are stored in different databanks require standard software computational tools for sequence identifications, structural analysis and visualization. Recently bioinformatics applications make use of XML technology due to its flexibility, durability, data modeling capability, data interoperability and open framework possibility for defining standards. The traditional architectures available in literature are lagging in terms of standard formats for biological data integration. This work describes the features and limitations of those architectures and investigates the need for a remodeled architecture in terms of using technologies such as extensible style sheet languages (XSL), XSL translators (XSLT), document object model (DOM) and application program interface (API). The proposed architecture is intended to extract and handle the biological data from the different databanks.

Landing dispersion estimates for the Mars Exploration Rover missions were key elements in the site targeting process and in the evaluation of landing risk. This paper addresses the process and results of the landing dispersion analyses performed for both Spirit and Opportunity. The several contributors to landing dispersions (navigation and atmospheric uncertainties, spacecraft modeling, winds, and margins) are discussed, as are the analysis tools used. JPL's MarsLS program, a MATLAB-based landing dispersion visualization and statistical analysis tool, was used to calculate the probability of landing within hazardous areas. By convolving this with the probability of landing within flight system limits (in-spec landing) for each hazard area, a single overall measure of landing risk was calculated for each landing ellipse. In-spec probability contours were also generated, allowing a more synoptic view of site risks, illustrating the sensitivity to changes in landing location, and quantifying the possible consequences of anomalies such as incomplete maneuvers. data and products required to support these analyses are described, including the landing footprints calculated by NASA Langley's POST program and JPL's AEPL program, cartographically registered base maps and hazard maps, and flight system estimates of in-spec landing probabilities for each hazard terrain type. Various factors encountered during operations, including evolving navigation estimates and changing atmospheric models, are discussed and final landing points are compared with approach estimates. This paper describes a novel application of Fourier descriptor techniques for the recognition of hand gesture trajectories. Appearance based coordinates of hand centroids and time steps are normalized to a fixed length by multirate techniques. Fourier techniques are applied to the data to produce frequency domain data that is scale and translation invariant. The results of inputting the complex harmonic data to a probabilistic neural network for gesture classification are discussed. An understanding of underlying structure of gesture trajectories can be gained from modeling them as an infinite set of ellipses at given orientations. The rotation of the ellipses is visualized in the time domain as 'elliptic corkscrews'.
